Book excerpt: Almost forty years after artist Alice Steer Wilson (1926-2001) wrote a message on the back of one of her paintings, this book offers an intimate view of her art. She enjoyed an undisputed role in the renaissance of Cape May, New Jersey. Known as "Mrs. Cape May," Wilson painted en plein air to capture the changing light on Victorian cottages, inns and hotels. She was hailed as a patron of preservationists and a colorist who conveyed the intrinsic character of a seaside resort fallen on hard times. This catalogue presents over 220 images from her career and invites the reader into an intimate view of the painter's life. It is the first publication of this scope, from the inside view of the artist's daughter and collaborator, the writer Janice Wilson Stridick. 128 pages, 229 illustrations, 208 in color

Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2002. 'Memory and Desire' is a lavishly illustrated account of the art world in Britain at the turn of the twentieth century. It calls upon rich resources of contemporary diaries, letters and art criticism, as well as the analysis of works of art to answer questions about how and why new artistic tendencies emerged and tastes changed. Eschewing the familiar narrative of an inevitable progress towards modernism, Kenneth McConkey considers a broad range of art and critical thinking in the period. Discussing the market for old master paintings, which rivalled those for modern art, and the question of how and why certain genres of art were particularly successful at the time, McConkey explores the detail and significance of contemporary taste. He draws upon the work of commercially successful painters such as John Singer Sargent, William Orpen, George Clausen, Alfred East, John Lavery and Philip Wilson Steer, and their critic-supporters to throw light upon current arguments about training, aesthetics, visual memory and the creation of new art. 'Memory and Desire' is a major contribution to our knowledge of this important period in British art.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In one of the first studies of its kind, Orphan texts seeks to insert the orphan, and the problems its existence poses, in the larger critical areas of the family and childhood in Victorian culture. In doing so, Laura Peters considers certain canonical texts alongside lesser known works from popular culture in order to establish the context in which discourses of orphanhood operated. The study argues that the prevalence of the orphan figure can be explained by considering the family. The family and all it came to represent - legitimacy, race and national belonging - was in crisis. In order to reaffirm itself the family needed a scapegoat: it found one in the orphan figure. As one who embodied the loss of the family, the orphan figure came to represent a dangerous threat to the family; and the family reaffirmed itself through the expulsion of this threatening difference. Orphan texts will be of interest to final year undergraduates, postgraduates, academics and those interested in the areas of Victorian literature, Victorian studies, postcolonial studies, history and popular culture.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 158 pages

Download or read book Philip Wilson Steer written by Ysanne Holt and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philip Wilson Steer (1860-1942) spent his childhood and youth at Whitchurch near Ross-on-Wye, just three miles from the English-Welsh border, and studied at the Gloucester College of Art. He was at the centre of much controversy in the British art world at the end of the nineteenth century and was a prime mover in the adoption of French Impressionist techniques during that period. Although much criticised for this role, Steer taught at the Slade for many years and was a friend of Sargent, Sickert and other influential artists. Eventually his stunning landscapes caught the mood of loss and of "Englishness" in the inter-war years and he became one of the most popular and admired artists in Britain. This timely study of Steer, the first for twenty years, explores his importance to British art and charts the influence of the Impressionists, Turner, Constable and Gainsborough on his work. It is also a fascinating story of how a modest and unassuming man devoted himself to art, even in the face of increasing blindness, and became a leader of opinion through his painting. Ysanne Holt lectures on the History of Art at the Newcastle College of Art and Design and at the University of Northumbria at Newcastle. She is an authority on twentieth century British art, especially at the Slade school.
