Book Bruce Nauman

    Book Details:
  • Author : Constance Lewallen
  • Publisher : University of California Press
  • Release : 2019-01-08
  • ISBN : 0520296052
  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book Bruce Nauman written by Constance Lewallen and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book devoted solely to Bruce Nauman’s corridors and other architectural installations, Bruce Nauman: Spatial Encounters deftly explores the significance of these works in the development of his singular art practice, examining them in the context of the period and in relation to other artists like Dan Graham, Robert Morris, Paul Kos, and James Turrell. Designed for viewer participation, Bruce Nauman’s architectural installations often confound expectations and induce physical and psychological unease. The essays in this book consider these works, which begin in 1969 and continue into the 1970s and beyond, in terms of the physical, perceptual, and psychological pressures they exert on the participant. Three interlocking perspectives on the topic—Constance M. Lewallen’s historical overview, Dore Bowen’s case study of Nauman’s 1970 Corridor Installation with Mirror—San Jose Installation (Double Wedge Corridor with Mirror), and a supplementary essay by Ted Mann on Nauman’s drawings—provide a comprehensive and in-depth approach. The book coincides with the major retrospective exhibition Bruce Nauman: Disappearing Acts at the Schaulager Museum, Basel, Switzerland (March 17–August 26, 2018) and the Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1, New York (October 21, 2018–March 17, 2019).

Book Replications

    Book Details:
  • Author : Whitney Davis
  • Publisher : Penn State Press
  • Release : 2010-11-01
  • ISBN : 9780271044118
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book Replications written by Whitney Davis and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The twelve interdisciplinary essays collected here explore what Whitney Davis calls "replication" in archaeology, art history, and psychoanalysis--the sequential production of similar artifacts or images substitutable for one another in specific contexts of use. Davis suggests that while archaeology deals with the "physics" of replication (its material conditions and constraints), psychoanalysis deals with the "psychics" of replication (its mental conditions and constraints). Because art history is equally interested in the material properties and in the personal and cultural meaning of artifacts and images, it can mediate the interests of archaeology and psychoanalysis. Thus Replications explores not only the differences between but also the common ground shared by archaeology, art history, and psychoanalysis--focusing, for example, on their mutual interest in the "style" of artifacts or image making, their need to treat the "nonintentional" or "nonmeaningful" element in production, and their models of the subjective and social transmission of replications in the life history of persons and communities. Replications is an original contribution to an emerging field of study in domains as diverse as philosophy, cognitive science, connoisseurship, and cultural studies--the intersection of the material and the meaningful in the human production of artifacts. Davis develops formal models for and theories about this relationship, exploring the ideas of a number of philosophers, historians, and critics and presenting his own distinctive conceptual analysis.

Book Of Dogs and Other People

  • Author : Susan Landauer
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press

  • ISBN : 0520292200
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Of Dogs and Other People written by Susan Landauer and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017-04-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Roy De Forest's brightly colored, crazy-quilted jungles dotted with nipples of paint and inhabited by a cast of characters uniquely his own (a perennial favorite being his wild-eyed, pointy-eared dogs) appeal to a broad spectrum of viewers from young to old, from the casual visitor to the most sophisticated art aficionado. OMCA's project aims to reassess De Forest's art-historical position, placing him in a national rather than solely regional/West Coast context. Landauer positions De Forest as part of a bicoastal alternative current of American art that has been poorly documented and deliberately ran counter to better publicized tendencies of the 1960s and 1970s, notably Pop, Minimalism, and post-painterly abstraction. Despite the playfulness of his work, close study of De Forest's art reveals deep layers of meaning. He was a fan of popular science fiction and adventure stories, but he was also well versed in Australian aboriginal art, ukiyo-e prints, poetry, literature, and the history of philosophy. He enjoyed secreting obscure art-historical references into his work: animals might assume postures found in Medieval or Renaissance art, or a drawing that appears to depict a comic-book character may in fact refer to Titian's triple-headed allegory of Prudence. This engaging publication presents gorgeous color reproductions of 150 of De Forest's finest artworks, plus a variety of figure illustrations that illuminate the artist's diverse sources and freewheeling social and creative milieu in Northern California."--Provided by publisher.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though once scheduled for demolition, Midtown Sacramento battled back to become the city's geographic and cultural center--a beacon for offbeat artists, progressive thinkers and independent spirits. This eclectic neighborhood made history through social progress and artistic innovation. Through the hippie counterculture of the 1960s, the irreverent power of punk rock in the 1970s and '80s and the social and political consciousness of Generation X in the 1990s and beyond, Midtown always led the way. Now Sacramento historian and Midtown resident William Burg tells the story of the diverse generations of Sacramentans who shaped this trailblazing neighborhood.
