Book Framing Majismo

  • Author : Tara Zanardi
  • Publisher : Penn State Press

Download or read book Framing Majismo written by Tara Zanardi and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2016-03-08 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Majismo, a cultural phenomenon that embodied the popular aesthetic in Spain from the second half of the eighteenth century, served as a vehicle to “regain” Spanish heritage. As expressed in visual representations of popular types participating in traditional customs and wearing garments viewed as historically Spanish, majismo conferred on Spanish “citizens” the pictorial ideal of a shared national character. In Framing Majismo, Tara Zanardi explores nobles’ fascination with and appropriation of the practices and types associated with majismo, as well as how this connection cultivated the formation of an elite Spanish identity in the late 1700s and aided the Bourbons’ objective to fashion themselves as the legitimate rulers of Spain. In particular, the book considers artistic and literary representations of the majo and the maja, purportedly native types who embodied and performed uniquely Spanish characteristics. Such visual examples of majismo emerge as critical and contentious sites for navigating eighteenth-century conceptions of gender, national character, and noble identity. Zanardi also examines how these bodies were contrasted with those regarded as “foreign,” finding that “foreign” and “national” bodies were frequently described and depicted in similar ways. She isolates and uncovers the nuances of bodily representation, ultimately showing how the body and the emergent nation were mutually constructed at a critical historical moment for both.

Book Around the World in 80 Beers

Download or read book Around the World in 80 Beers written by Martyn Cornell and published by Pen and Sword History. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explore global beer diversity, from ancient origins to modern innovations across 40+ countries, appealing to both novices and aficionados. Come with us on a beer-fuelled journey crisscrossing the globe, taking in every continent and more than 40 different countries, as we discover the huge range of different brews available today around the world, explore their backstories, take a deep dive into the history of beer, going back 13,000 years to the dawn of civilisation, and come right up to the 21st century to discover beer styles invented only a few years ago. No matter if you are a beginner in beer, just starting to discover the amazing variety of beverages made from grain and yeast that can be found from pole to pole, or an experienced beer drinker who knows their porter from their pilsner and their bock from their bitter, there will be stories within these pages that will educate, amaze, amuse and inspire you. Around the World in 80 Beers travels from the pine forest of Finland to the jungles of Brazil, and the moors of Scotland to the rocky coasts of New Zealand. It covers all the great brewing cities of the world – Munich, Pilsen, London, Dublin, Milwaukee and so on – and also looks at beer brewing in places as diverse as Trappist monasteries in Belgium and villages in the hills of Myanmar in South East Asia. The range of different beers covered is astonishing: not just the well-known, such as IPA, pilsner, and Imperial stout, but the rare and little-heard-of, such as Norwegian kveik ale, or Jopejskie, the thick, black, amazingly strong beer recently revived in Poland. It uncovers some strange stories, such as the surprising popularity of milk stout among the urban working class in South Africa, and knocks some myths on the head, such as the allegedly ancient history of Irish Red Ale. In all, this is a trip like no other you have ever been on. Strap yourself in, and grab your glass.

Book Spanish Art in Britain and Ireland 1750 1920

Download or read book Spanish Art in Britain and Ireland 1750 1920 written by Enriqueta Harris and published by Tamesis Books. This book was released on 2010 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Golden Age to Goya. This is the first study wholly devoted to reception of Spanish art in Britain and Ireland. Examining the extent and sources of knowledge of Spanish art in the British Isles during an age of increasing contact, particularly in theaftermath of the Peninsular War, it contains contributions by leading scholars, including reprints of three essays by Enriqueta Harris Frankfort, to whose memory this book is dedicated. Focusing on Spanish art from the Golden Age to Goya, these studies chart the growth in understanding and appreciation of the Spanish School, and its punctuation by controversies and continuing distrust of religious images in Protestant Britain, as well as by the successive `discoveries' of individual artists - Murillo, Velázquez, Ribera, Zurbarán, El Greco and Goya. The book publishes important new research on art importation, collecting and dealing, and discusses the increase in access to andscholarship on works of art, including their reproduction through both traditional prints and copies and the newly invented photographic methods. It also considers for the first time the role of women in reflecting taste for thearts of Spain. It is richly illustrated with 17 colour and 54 black and white illustrations.
