Book Etruscan Red Figured Vase Painting at Caere

Download or read book Etruscan Red Figured Vase Painting at Caere written by Mario A. Del Chiaro and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study derives from a close investigation of a class of Etruscan plates belonging to the Genucillia Group. Soon attracted to these products of no great aesthetic merit were many vases of different shapes and more imposing character, also decorated by Caeretan painters. We can now recognize a fairly important and prolific red-figured fabric produced at Caere, an Etruscan city of major significance whose pottery must be fully considered in any future discussion of Etruscan art and civilization. Many vases previously grouped and treated within the more general framework of Etruscan red-figure are now attributed to Caertan potters an vase painters. This disclosure will provide important data for the better understanding of political, commercial and cultural relations between cities within and beyond Etruria during the whole of the 4th century B.C. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press's mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. This title was originally published in 1974.

Book Etruscan Civilization

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sybille Haynes
  • Publisher : Getty Publications
  • Release : 2000
  • ISBN : 9780892366002
  • Pages : 456 pages

Download or read book Etruscan Civilization written by Sybille Haynes and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2000 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive survey of Etruscan civilization, from its origin in the Villanovan Iron Age in the ninth century B.C. to its absorption by Rome in the first century B.C., combines well-known aspects of the Etruscan world with new discoveries and fresh insights into the role of women in Etruscan society. In addition, the Etruscans are contrasted to the Greeks, whom they often emulated, and to the Romans, who at once admired and disdained them. The result is a compelling and complete picture of a people and a culture. This in-depth examination of Etruria examines how differing access to mineral wealth, trade routes, and agricultural land led to distinct regional variations. Heavily illustrated with ancient Etruscan art and cultural objects, the text is organized both chronologically and thematically, interweaving archaeological evidence, analysis of social structure, descriptions of trade and burial customs, and an examination of pottery and works of art.

Book The Etruscan World

    Book Details:
  • Author : Jean MacIntosh Turfa
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-11-13
  • ISBN : 1134055307
  • Pages : 2021 pages

Download or read book The Etruscan World written by Jean MacIntosh Turfa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 2021 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Etruscans can be shown to have made significant, and in some cases perhaps the first, technical advances in the central and northern Mediterranean. To the Etruscan people we can attribute such developments as the tie-beam truss in large wooden structures, surveying and engineering drainage and water tunnels, the development of the foresail for fast long-distance sailing vessels, fine techniques of metal production and other pyrotechnology, post-mortem C-sections in medicine, and more. In art, many technical and iconographic developments, although they certainly happened first in Greece or the Near East, are first seen in extant Etruscan works, preserved in the lavish tombs and goods of Etruscan aristocrats. These include early portraiture, the first full-length painted portrait, the first perspective view of a human figure in monumental art, specialized techniques of bronze-casting, and reduction-fired pottery (the bucchero phenomenon). Etruscan contacts, through trade, treaty and intermarriage, linked their culture with Sardinia, Corsica and Sicily, with the Italic tribes of the peninsula, and with the Near Eastern kingdoms, Greece and the Greek colonial world, Iberia, Gaul and the Punic network of North Africa, and influenced the cultures of northern Europe. In the past fifteen years striking advances have been made in scholarship and research techniques for Etruscan Studies. Archaeological and scientific discoveries have changed our picture of the Etruscans and furnished us with new, specialized information. Thanks to the work of dozens of international scholars, it is now possible to discuss topics of interest that could never before be researched, such as Etruscan mining and metallurgy, textile production, foods and agriculture. In this volume, over 60 experts provide insights into all these aspects of Etruscan culture, and more, with many contributions available in English for the first time to allow the reader access to research that may not otherwise be available to them. Lavishly illustrated, The Etruscan World brings to life the culture and material past of the Etruscans and highlights key points of development in research, making it essential reading for researchers, academics and students of this fascinating civilization.

Book On the Fascination of Objects

Download or read book On the Fascination of Objects written by Sally Waite and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Shefton Collection in Newcastle upon Tyne contains a fine array of Greek and Etruscan objects and takes its name from its founder Professor Brian Shefton (1919 – 2012). In spite of the importance of this collection it has not been widely published and remains something of a hidden gem. Brian Shefton was an insightful collector, as well as a distinguished scholar of Greek and Etruscan archaeology, and the 14 papers presented here reflect the broad scope of the collection; ranging across pottery, jewelery, terracottas and metalwork. The contributions, written by leading experts in the field, focus on specific objects or groups of objects in the Collection, providing new interpretations and bringing previously unpublished items to light. The history of the Shefton Collection is explored. Together these contributions provide a tribute to a remarkable individual who made a substantial and notable contribution to his discipline.
