Book Paint Technology and Tests Classic Reprint

Download or read book Paint Technology and Tests Classic Reprint written by Henry A. Gardner and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paint Technology and Tests A few years ago the producer and consumer of paints pos sessed comparatively little knowledge of the relative durability of various pigments and oils. There existed in some cases a prejudice for a few standard products, that often held the user in bondage, discouraging investigation and exciting suspicion whenever discoveries were made, that brought forth new ma terials. Such conditions indicated to the more progressive, the need of positive information regarding the value of various painting materials, and the advisability of having the questions at issue determined in a practical manner. The desire that such work should be instituted, resulted in the creation of a Scientific Section, the Scope of which was to make investigations to determine the relative merits of different types of paint, and to enlighten the industry on various technical problems. Paint exposure tests of an extensive nature were started in various sections of the country where climatic condi tions vary. This field work was supplemented in the laboratory by a series of important researches into the properties of pig ments, oils, and other raw products entering into the manufac ture of protective coatings. The results of the work were published in bulletin form and given wide distribution. The demand for these bulletins early exhausted the original impress, and a general summary therefore forms a part of this volume. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Technology of Paints The manufacture of mixed paints is essentially American, having been accredited to some enterprising New Englanders who observed that when a linseed oil paint was mixed with a solution of silicate of soda (water glass) an emulsion was formed, and the paint SO made Showed very little tendency to settle or harden in the package. Several lay claim to this discovery. The first mixed paint was marketed in small packages for home consumption and appeared about 1865. The addition of silicate of soda is still practised by a few manufacturers, but the tendency is to eliminate 'it as far as possible and to minimize as much as possible the use of an alkaline watery solution to keep the paint in suspension. The general use of zinc oxid has had much to do with the progress of mixed paint, for it is well known that corroded white lead and linseed Oil settle quickly in the package, while zinc oxid keeps the heavier lead longer in suspension. Where only heavy materials are used, manufacturers are inclined to add up to 4 per cent Of water. Under another chapter on Water in the Composition of Mixed Paints, page 254, this subject will be fully discussed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry and Technology of Mixed Paints The difficulty which I encountered in writing this book was not how much to write but how much to omit, for I found on compiling my notes that I could very easily have made two volumes, each larger than the present one, and still I would not have covered the ground thoroughly. It is for, this reason that I have omitted many of the pigments which are rarely used, and have paid no attention whatever to the pigments which have gone out of use. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Industrial and Artistic Technology of Paint and Varnish IN the twelve years which have passed since the first publica tion of this work, certain changes have come about which seem to make a new edition desirable. The most important is the use of tung-oil in varnish-making, which has entirely changed the character of cheap and medium-priced products. Varnishes con taining it dry with a rapidity and hardness unknown before, which lessens the time needed for finishing work; and its remarkable water-resisting quality makes rosin-varnishes more durable and better in every way. But surfaces thus finished become hard and crack, the general appearance of furniture and of railway passenger coaches and medium-priced carriages of every sor't throughout the country has grown worse rather than better during the last ten years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Paint Researches and Their Practical Application The work undertaken by the writer during the past six years for the Educational Bureau of the Paint Manufacturers' Asso ciation of the United States has been conducted at The Institute of Industrial Research at Washington. During this period of time considerable sums of money have been spent on investi gations made to determine the usefulness of various materials which might find employment in the industrv. While many of the results have been communicated to the manufacturers. They hafte never been placed in a form for readv reference. It is hoped, therefore, that this volume, with its complete index and many illustrations, will prove useful for this purpose, and at the same time serve as a guide to the student who desires to be in touch with recent work on the technology of paint. Download or read book The Chemistry of Paints and Paint Vehicles Classic Reprint written by Clare H. Hall and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Paints and Paint Vehicles In writing this book the author has attempted to sift from the great mass of analytical chemistry those methods which apply particularly to the analysis of paints, at the same time calling attention to the most important physical characteristics of the raw materials. No chemist can be proficient in the analysis of paints without a thorough knowledge of all the materials with which he comes in contact, and although no attempt is here made to give anything more than the most general facts regarding them it is to be hoped that such will be sufficient to act as an incentive for each to personally investigate all pigments, etc., until thoroughly familiar with their every aspect. Book The Chemistry of Paints and Painting Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Chemistry of Paints and Painting Classic Reprint written by Sir Arthur H. Church and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chemistry of Paints and Painting I have incorporated with the present issue the substance of the paragraphs which he introduced into my original text; these are indicated by the sign. In preparing the following pages for the press, I have to acknowledge, as on previous occasions, the help of several friends and correspondents. Amongst these I specially name Mr. J. Scott Taylor, many of whose suggestions have been incorporated in the text, and also Dr. A. P. Laurie, my successor in the chair of Chemistry in the Royal Academy of Arts. Of recent years the literature dealing with the subjects to which the present handbook is devoted has greatly increased. Several of the volumes named in my 'Bibliographical Notes' are of sterling merit and contain original material of no little importance. But I am bound to confess that I have met with several disappointments when searching for records of new facts in recent dictionary articles, reports of lectures, and treatises. On perusal a familiar note seemed sometimes to be struck; and I ultimately identified not a little of the material as my own. I will not dwell on this matter; it is indeed some consolation to feel that such transferences from my pages would not have taken place had not the paragraphs and tables and comments been deemed of some value. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Testing and Valuation of Raw Materials Used in Paint and Colour Manufacture This important branch of work embraces the most tedious, but at the same time most valuable results which the chemist is called upon to produce and as he has frequently to decide with rapidity and accuracy upon the respective merits of several samples tendered by competing firms, the following analytical processes are offered as a guide. By means of them the manipulator is enabled to produce the maximum of accuracy in minimum time, two essentials always to be considered in a busy laboratory, and which are not always attained by following the more classical processes given in some of the standard manuals. Book Analysis of Paint and Varnish Products Classic Reprint

Download or read book Analysis of Paint and Varnish Products Classic Reprint written by Clifford Dyer Holley and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Analysis of Paint and Varnish Products This book was written primarily to meet the needs of the author's own classes in Industrial Quantitative Analysis, and it is given to the public in the belief that there is a demand for a concise work on the analysis of paints and paint products. Numerous books have been written during the past few years dealing with the subject of Paints, discussing in a general way the properties of the various pigments and their methods of manufacture. But the author is not acquainted with a single work that will serve as a guide to a chemist of ordinary training in taking a can of mixed paint, of practically any shade or tint, making a complete analysis of it and furnishing him sufficient data, derived from a large number of analyses, so that he may interpret the results of his own analysis in a rational manner. It is the object of the author as far as may be to fill this much felt want, and the methods given in the following pages should be of interest to advanced college students who may wish to inform themselves on methods of paint analysis; to the industrial chemist who has more or less paint work to do; and especially to the young paint chemist who is just starting out in his career. Each method given in this work has been tested out in the author's laboratory and its working value thoroughly demonstrated. The various analyses given are believed to be representative of the composition of the pigments they illustrate, and it is hoped that they will be of service in enabling the analyst to pass on paint products with fairness to both the manufacturer and the consumer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Painting to Prevent Corrosion: With Specifications The author of the following pages was recently asked to write some specifications for painting an important structure, which was to be coated first with a preservative against corrosion and finished with a light-colored paint; and it was desired to have as good and thorough work as could be obtained. A rough draft of such specifications was drawn up and submitted to several engineers of experience, from whom valuable criticisms have been received; and it was then decided to publish a small edition of the same, hoping to thereby elicit further criticism and information relating to actual practice, and also to direct attention to the subject.
