Book Pathophysiology of Pain Perception

Download or read book Pathophysiology of Pain Perception written by Stefan Lautenbacher and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Under certain pathological conditions, the pain processing system, which includes both physiological and psychological components, can produce the experience of pain in the absence of any peripheral noxious event. Considerable evidence now indicates that alterations in pain perception are characteristic of many clinical pain states. Pathophysiology of Pain Perception primarily examines these pathological alterations in the pain-signaling system, with contributions from leading researchers in the field focusing on the functioning of the pain processing system under normal and pathological conditions. The understanding of pain perception is essential for optimal diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic pain. This book covers the basics of pain perception (peripheral and central neurotransmission, methods of assessment), various pathological (chronic pain conditions, neurological and psychiatric diseases, cardiovascular disease), and non-pathological alterations of pain perception (pregnancy, labor) as well as the treatments aiming at influencing pain perception such as pharmacological, physical and psychological treatments.

Download or read book Thought and Feeling written by Richard E. Nisbett and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently there has been growing awareness and acceptance of the proposition that people do not exist in a world of physically defined forces and events, but in a world defined by their own perceptions, cognitions, conclusions, and imaginations. We respond and react not to some objectively defined set of stimuli, but to our own apperceptions of stimuli that we define subjectively. The original essays in this volume center on one aspect of this process of attribution: The extent to which the perception of events and causes results in the determination, modification, or alteration of emotions, feelings, and affective states. This book is divided into five sections, each of which elucidates and extends these theoretical conceptions. Part 1 provides a historical background and analytical framework for the rest of the book. Part 2 presents chapters dealing with the sorts of internal cues which may give rise to a feeling state. Part 3 presents a chapter discussing the evaluative needs aroused by the internal cues. Part 4 is concerned with the process of explanation triggered by the evaluative needs. Part 5 deals with various external cues and how they are used to label the internal feeling state. There is a concluding discussion of the cognitive alteration of feeling states. The authors deal with aggression, boredom, obesity, the control of pain, and delusional systems. This volume is of continuing importance to clinical and experimental psychologists as well as social psychologists. Each of the authors takes the theoretical concept of cognition and relates it to research in biofeedback, physiology, social psychology, altered states of consciousness, etc. Thus, the book bridges the gap between cognitive theory and the use of that theory in applied research.

Book Emotions in Personality and Psychopathology

Download or read book Emotions in Personality and Psychopathology written by Carroll Izard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant developments within the past few years have made possible the publication of this rather large volume focusing on specific emotions of human experience, such as interest, joy, anger, distress, fear, shame, shyness, and guilt. The relevant events include new evidence on the relationship of emotions to cognitive processes and to personality traits and defense mechanisms. They also include discoveries relating to the biological foundations of emotions and theory regarding their significance in human evolution. Finally, there have been important findings on the role of emotions and emotion expressions in social relations, pain, grief, and psychopathology. These developments are elaborated in the pages of this volume. The contributors represent the disciplines of clinical, social, and experi mental psychology, psychiatry, and psychoanalysis. The contributions show important common themes that cut across disciplines, but they also reflect some differences that invite further thought and research. Above all, they add to our knowledge of human emotions and to our ability to understand and resolve human problems. The Department of Psychology of the University of Delaware has pro vided an excellent intellectual climate for work on a volume that ranges across several specialities and disciplines. Conversations with colleagues in the offices and hallways of Wolf Hall have provided answers to many questions. They also yielded some questions that compelled me to seek greater clarification of an issue.

Book excerpt: This thorough revision of the first edition, updates and expands, with 25 percent new material, what was generally recognized as a major survey of contemporary scientific research in hypnosis. In this edition, also a classic, the editors include three new essays in modern hypnosis studies. They also provide a new conceptual framework--cognitive, ego-psychological, and phenomenological--with which to examine hypnosis. This edition is divided into six sections--Theoretical and Historical Perspectives, New Theories, Surveys of Broad Areas, Lines of Individual Research, Individual Researches within Specific Areas, and Anticipations for Future Research. The entire book was completely revised in the light of additional research since publication of the original edition. Thirteen of the twenty chapters in the first edition were updated by their authors, six so extensively that they amount to new chapters, with changes in title and order of authors in the case of coauthored chapters. Hypnosis: Developments in Research and New Perspectives is intended for researchers in hypnosis and clinical practitioners in medicine and psychology. The focus, as indicated by the changed subtitle, is on developments since publication of the original editions: empirical studies, experiments with physiological indicators of hypnosis, and theoretical uses associated with use of hypnosis as a research tool. Altogether, this second edition is a valuable overall guide to an intriguing topic.

Book Hypnosis

  • Author : Irving Kirsch
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351929291
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book Hypnosis written by Irving Kirsch and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern hypnosis can be traced back to the 18th century and during this period mesmerism, as it was then known, was a healing practice which spread throughout Europe and North America. Since then hypnosis has been treated primarily as a psychological phenomenon and theories about hypnosis are grounded in mainstream psychology and its related disciplines. Most recently it has been subject to extensive clinical trials to investigate its therapeutic effectiveness. In their comprehensive introduction to this invaluable collection the editors trace the historical development of hypnosis, providing an excellent review of the theories that have tried to explain how hypnosis works and reflecting on the cultural and scientific attitudes and practices that prevailed at various times. They have selected the most important previously published papers that reveal how a scientific approach to understanding hypnosis as a psychological phenomenon has emerged over the last 70 years. They have also included a selection of reports on clinical applications and on legal and forensic issues. As such this volume will prove an invaluable reference resource for researchers and students already in the field and new scholars interested in learning more about hypnosis.

Book Facts Fallacies and Frauds in Psychology

Download or read book Facts Fallacies and Frauds in Psychology written by Andrew M. Colman and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Are the effects of hypnosis real or imagined? Is intelligence determined by nature or nurture? Will ordinary people perform acts of cruelty if ordered to do so by authority figures? Are anorexia and bulimia nervosa forms of depression? Why do some groups outscore others on IQ tests? Is there any real evidence of ESP? These are some of the questions that continued to generate fierce arguments among psychologists and excite considerable general interest in the 1980s and beyond. But where does the truth lie? Originally published in 1987, Facts, Fallacies and Frauds in Psychology looks closely at these six popular and controversial issues. In each case the central ideas are explained and research findings presented in such a way that readers can begin their own voyage of scientific discovery, develop a clearer, deeper understanding – and find out how psychologists really think. Reputations are assessed: fraud is unflinchingly exposed. This entertaining and provocative book will still fascinate the general reader and provide an excellent introduction for students of psychology. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1987. The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

Book excerpt: Although research and practice in hypnosis has seen unprecedented expansion, there has been a definite lack of inclusive and comprehensive surveys to aid the student and researcher. This collection of original chapters written by leading experimental investigators is the first work to offer a current state-of-the-art in hypnosis research. A compendium of the historical background, theories, issues, and trends in hypnosis, this volume represents all major experimental viewpoints while providing a virtual ""who's who"" in the field of hypnosis. The first two chapters (written by the editors) establish the current theoretical base of the field and review the historical background. Seventeen contributions focus directly on key aspects of present day hypnosis research. These contributions are organized as surveys of broad topic areas, descriptions in depth of individual investigator's programmatic lines of research, and reports on research within specific areas, especially those representing new viewpoints and holding promise for programmatic development. A final chapter develops questions for future research.Offering an inclusive survey of the field from its historical inceptions to its current and predictive state, this book presents many new ideas while updating established positions in research and theory. The vital areas covered in connection with hypnosis include: psychophysiology, creativity, dreams, imagination, suggestibility, simulator controls, cognitive activity, and ego-psychological theory. In addition there are chapters on hypnosis as a research method, the measurement of altered states of consciousness, and hypnotic programming techniques in psychological experiments. Hypnosis: Research Developments and Perspectives is written for researchers in hypnosis and clinical practitioners in medicine and psychology. The book will serve as a basic text in all courses in hypnosis at the graduate level.

Book excerpt: In this book, the author discusses his ground-breaking approach to treating chronic musculoskeletal pain, drawn from decades in his Denver, Colorado orthopedic physical therapy clinic. Using a holistic yet evidence-based strategy to solving the body's pain mysteries, he provides insight and hope to those seeking answers, arguing that the key is to recognize that the location of pain has little to do with where the pain actually originates. The book takes the reader on a journey of self-discovery, revealing unique body connections at the root of chronic pain, and includes real patient stories about how this approach helped with everything from sciatica to migraines.
