Book excerpt: Do you sometimes feel . . . Down, depressed, or unhappy? Anxious, panicky, or insecure? Guilty, inadequate, or worthless? Lonely, unwanted, or alone? For decades, we've been told that "negative" feelings like depression and anxiety are the result of what's wrong with us, which creates feelings of shame and makes it sound like we're broken and need to be "fixed." But what if we have it all backwards? What if our negative moods do not result from what's wrong with us but, rather, what's right with us? This is the revolutionary mind shift you will find in Feeling Great. Written by Dr. David Burns, a pioneer of cognitive therapy and author of the national bestseller Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy, this book describes a groundbreaking high-speed treatment for depression and anxiety based on one simple notion: Our struggles actually reflect what is most beautiful about us. And when we can see our negative thoughts and feelings from this radically different perspective, recovery becomes possible--sometimes even in the blink of an eye! Based on Dr. Burns's 40+ years of research and more than 40,000 hours treating individuals with severe mood issues, Feeling Great is filled with inspiring real-life case studies and more than 50 actionable tools to crush the negative thoughts that rob you of happiness and self-esteem. Book Zenstudies Making a Healthy Transition to Higher Education Module 3 Facilitator s Guide

This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Zenstudies: Making a Healthy Transition to Higher Education program aims to prevent depression and anxiety among first-year students in post-secondary school. It includes three modules, or prevention levels, Module 3 of Zenstudies, presented here, is a targeted-indicated prevention program consisting in 10 small-group sessions (no more than 12 students) led by two mental health professionals. This is the guide for Module 3, the targeted-indicated prevention program. It presents the 10 small-group sessions (6 to 10 students) that will be led by two mental health professionals. The sessions include 15 components and are tailored to first-year students experiencing anxious or depressive symptoms. The goal is early intervention, aimed at preventing mental health disorders in at-risk students. It has been shown that the presence of symptoms is a strong predictor of a future mental health disorder, which is why intervention is vital at symptom onset. By reducing symptoms of depression and anxiety, the program also facilitates the transition from high school to college or university, thereby lowering the risk of dropout. It also raises awareness about anxiety and depression—which are both internalizing disorders—and equips students with different preventive strategies. Published in English.

Book Helping Others with Depression

Download or read book Helping Others with Depression written by Susan J. Noonan and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2020-12-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to how family members and friends can help someone who has depression. Mood disorders such as depression and bipolar disorder are biologic conditions of the mind and body that affect our everyday functioning, thoughts, feelings, and actions. Often devastating to the person, mood disorders can also be overwhelming to their family and close friends, who are frequently the first to recognize the subtle changes and symptoms of depression and the ones who provide daily support. Yet many feel unsure about how to help someone through the course of this difficult and disabling illness. This book is written for them. In Helping Others with Depression, Dr. Susan J. Noonan speaks firsthand from her perspective as a physician who has treated many patients, as a mental health Certified Peer Specialist, and as a patient with personal experience in living with the illness. Her combined professional and personal experiences have enabled her to write an evidence-based, concise, and practical guide to caring for someone who has depression or bipolar disorder, including men, women, teens, and seniors. In this compassionate book, Dr. Noonan • describes effective communication and support strategies to use during episodes of depression • combines sample narratives with concrete suggestions for what to say and how to encourage and support a loved one • offers essential advice for lifestyle interventions, finding appropriate professional help, shared decision making, and paying for treatment • helps readers understand how to navigate difficult situations, such as a loved one refusing treatment or grappling with suicidal thoughts • explains how caring for a person with a mood disorder creates unique challenges—and how to address those challenges • explores how concerned loved ones can use mobile applications and other technology to help • focuses on different populations, including teenagers, older adults, and people with substance abuse issues She also covers ways to model resilience, explains the concept of recovery—while describing what recovery looks like—and explores how caregivers can and must care for themselves. Featuring tables, vignettes, and sidebars that convey information in an accessible way, as well as comprehensive references, resources, and a glossary, this companion volume to Dr. Noonan's patient-oriented Take Control of Your Depression is an invaluable handbook. Praise for Other Books by Susan J. Noonan "This practical and compassionate handbook is perfectly suited to individuals living with depression: in accessible language, it offers firm, specific advice and quick cognitive tests and self-assessment metrics that even those in the deepest of doldrums will find helpful and relevant . . . It is of enormous value to the layperson, hungry for knowledge about how best to interact and help their loved one face the dreadful ravages of depression."—Nursing Times
