Based on extensive research in Sri Lanka as well as on interviews with Theravada and Tibetan nuns from around the world, Salgado's study invites a reconsideration of female renunciation. His name was Anthony Poshepny, but he was better known as Tony Poe. Poe was a heavy drinker, a stocky former Marine sergeant with the elite Parachute Battalion, and a CIA paramilitary agent. In 1942, at the age of seventeen, he joined the Marine Raiders. In Guadalcanal, he hunted down Japanese soldiers. In 1945, he led his machine gun section ashore across the knee-deep black sands at Red Beach on Iwo Jima. Recruited by the CIA in 1951, he was told that his role as a paramilitary agent was to carry out the Agency’s dirty work, which could be “plausibly denied.” He was the dagger in the phrase “cloak and dagger.” In 1961, he was in Laos, where his role as field commander of the CIA’s secret war was leading 17,000 mountain villagers against a well-equipped communist force and crossing enemy lines into China. Poe spent nine years living in his mountain hideout with his tribal fighters and absorbed sufficient shrapnel in his body to set off airport security alarms. He was awarded a chest full of medals, including two Purple Hearts and the CIA’s highest award: the Intelligence Star.

The undetected build-up of forces in those snowy peaks and canyons was a remarkable military feat. Equally remarkable was the subsequent defense and evacuation from Hungnam to Pusan by the 7th and 5th Marines, to which Kulbes' Mongrels had been temporarily attached.By the time the Mongrels arrived at Hamhung, inside the perimeter held by General Soule's Third Division, they had suffered more than 50% casualties. Their daily reports had been lost in the chaos of battle, however, and for too long, they were not recognized for their role at the Chosin. Their status as a temporarily "lost" company, combined with their cocky attitude, created ongoing friction with headquarters. As a result, they were assigned to demolition of docks and ordnance and had to watch as units they had fought alongside debarked for the security of Pusan. In reality, that assignment was probably both a punishment for their cocky attitude as well as recognition of their notable efficiency as combat engineers. "War Dawgs" was General Soule's nickname for the Mongrels.

The conventional wisdom, that such societies are static, is shown by the author to be an artifact of anthropological method. By piecing together extended oral histories and written history records, the author found that headhunting among the Ilongots of Northern Luzon, Philippines, was not an unchanging ancient custom, but a cultural practice that has shifted dramatically over the course of the past century. Headhunting stopped, resumed, and stopped again; its victims at various periods were fellow Ilongots, Japanese soldiers, and lowland Christian Filipinos; it took place as surprise attack, planned vendetta, or distant raid against strangers. Placing headhunting in its social, cultural, and historical contexts requires a novel sense of how to use biography, recorded history, and narrative in the analysis of small-scale, non-literate local communities. This study combines historical and ethnographic method and documents the inherent orchestration of structure, events, time, and consciousness. The book is illustrated with 34 photographs.
