Book Packing a Suitcase for the Afterlife

Download or read book Packing a Suitcase for the Afterlife written by Colleen Redman and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packing a Suitcase for the Afterlife is a collection of 34 poems that probe the questions: 'How much does the essence of one's psyche weigh? Is the soul the one carry-on that we actually take with us? In the end, what do we value and what do we leave behind?' The poems are a distillation that read like a memoir, tracking the journeys of childhood, aging, care giving and life's inevitable losses. Informed by the past and grounded in the present, they're drawn from the inner life, where humor and darkness intersect. Everyday domestic scenes and visitors from the natural world appear as signposts throughout the collection. "At this stage of life, my dreams are more lifelike, and my life is more dreamlike," says the author Colleen Redman, a widely-published poet and writer who covers events for her local newspaper. "Realistic with tinges of the surreal," wrote Felicia Mitchell in a recent review. Mitchell, a poet and creative writing teacher at Virginia's Henry and Emory College, went on to state, ..".she has, paradoxically, told the untold, touching on that which resides in both dreams and in life and in the borders between..." Redman, a long-time Floyd, Virginia resident, who is originally from the small coastal town of Hull, Massachusetts, writes about packing a suitcase before returning to her hometown to care for her ailing mother ... The last of the packing comes down to one question / should I bring extra shoes or make room for a book / Guide to a Happy Life? / I'm still looking for a good Sinatra record / because he was to your generation / what the Beatles were to mine / and music is a memory that doesn't skip... Another poem takes a metaphysical turn, questioning the reality of time and matter ...The days are small / packed tightly together / Not much room / for last minute changes ... Poetry is a passport / in the universal mother tongue / It's only 4% visible / and 96% dark riddle ... In 2001 Redman wrote The Jim and Dan Stories, a memoir about losing two of her brothers a month apart that was used in a grief and loss class at Radford University before it went out of print. Redman lost her older sister and mother in 2015, a loss she gives voice to in some of the poems.

Book excerpt: We all have to go...but who's really ready? In this wide-ranging book, long-time prepper and author George Ure of UrbanSurvival.com explores the many taboos on death and dying. However, the focus is on "figuring things out" and then coming up with concrete plans. The Afterlife - say Death studies - likely involves a Life Review Experience (LRE). So Ure offers a plan to deal with that. Besides some first-hand reports on financial aspects, Ure also proposes an extensive set of "life tools" to leave behind for heirs. With his usual style, Ure makes a taboo approachable. Starting with first chapters exploring whether Life is like a computer simulation. Or, more importantly, more like a Video Game... If that's the case, the Player's Guide will be useful and entertaining regardless of your age.

Book excerpt: A powerful exploration of the way AIDS reshapes relationships and lives Afterlife is a haunting and unforgettable story of men facing loss and seeking love, movingly capturing the moment in the 1980s when the AIDS epidemic was completely devastating the American gay community. Here, National Book Award winner Paul Monette depicts three men of various economic and social backgrounds, all with one thing in common: They are widowers, in a way, and all of their lovers died of AIDS in an LA hospital within a week of one another. Steven, Sonny, and Dell meet weekly to discuss how to go on with their lives despite the hanging sword of being HIV positive. One tries to find a semblance of normalcy; one rebels openly against the disease, choosing to treat his body as a temple that he can consecrate and desecrate at will; and one throws himself into fierce political activism. No matter what path each one takes, they are all searching for one thing: a way to live and love again. Afterlife finds Paul Monette at his most autobiographical, portraying men in a situation that he himself experienced, and one that he described to critical acclaim in the award-winning Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Paul Monette including rare images and never-before-seen documents from the Paul Monette papers of the UCLA Library Special Collections.

Book Pack My Bag A Self Portrait

Download or read book Pack My Bag A Self Portrait written by Henry Green and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 1993-04-17 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A luminous autobiography by one of England's most original, delightful, writers. In 1938 Henry Green, then thirty-three, dreaded the coming war and decided to "put down what comes to mind before one is killed." Pack My Bag was published in England in 1940. When he wrote it, Green had already published three of his nine novels and his style"a gathering web of insinuations"was fully developed. Pack My Bag is a marvelously quirky, clear-eyed memoir: a mother who shot at mangle wurzels (turnips) bowled across the lawn for her by the servants; the stately home packed with wounded World War I soldiers; the miseries of Eton, oddities of Oxford, and work in the family factory—the making of a brilliantly original novelist. "We have inherited the greatest orchestra, the English language, to conduct," Green once wrote. "The means are there; things are going on in life all the time around us." His use of language and his account of things that went on in his life inform this delightful and idiosyncratic autobiography, which begins: "I was born a mouthbreather with a silver spoon."

Book excerpt: Carrying baggage you don't need? When I was in college, I figured my life would come together around graduation. I’d meet a guy, have a beautiful wedding, and we'd buy a nice little house—not necessarily with a picket fence, but with whatever kind of fence we wanted. Whatever we decided, I would be happy. When I got out of college and my life didn’t look like that, I floundered, trying to get the life I had always dreamed of through career, travel, and relationships. But none of them satisfied me as I hoped. Like many twentysomethings, I tried to discover the life of my dreams, but instead I just kept accumulating baggage—school loans, electronics I couldn’t afford, hurt from broken relationships, and unmet expectations for what life was “supposed to be” like. Just when I had given up all hope of finding the “life I’d always dreamed about,” I decided to take a trip to all fifty states . . . because when you go on a trip, you can’t take your baggage. What I found was that “packing light” wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be. This is the story of my trip and learning to live life with less baggage.

Meet Tolstoy, Gauguin, and a Russian circus giant, members of the recently formed New James Gang, as they rob the Bank of New Orleans with a magical brush stroke. Then there's Lady Richter, expatriate madam, in love with the tall black piano player dead for years, but still playing in the main parlor. Invigorating ski jaunts down the ice mountains of Pluto, torrid love sessions under Big Ben, and the supernatural electrical storm that disrupts the Octoroon Ball are just a few of the defining moments necessary for these people to come in touch with the bookmarks of their souls, and the strangely simple meaning of life itself.

Book excerpt: You are not happy. You may enjoy periods of relative happiness and you may be happier than other people that you know, but you are not as happy as you'd like to be or as happy as you can be. How do I know? First of all, if you were completely satisfied with your life you wouldn't be holding this book in your hands right now. Second, it is very rare to find people that are in touch with certain realities regarding their existence that lead to lasting happiness. Spiritual Realism works in two ways. First, it will challenge the way you think about yourself and your personal reality construct, or in simpler terms, what you think is real. Your illusions need to be shattered in order to achieve the bliss that you desire, yet has been eluding you for so long. Second, this book will teach you a series of techniques that will make you happier and more content with your life if you practice them sincerely over an extended period of time. Spiritual Realism works. It cannot fail to work. Good luck! IMPORTANT NOTE: If you have strong religious beliefs you will likely find views in this book disturbing.
