Book Packet Switching Tomorrow s Communications Today

Download or read book Packet Switching Tomorrow s Communications Today written by Roy Rosner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1982-08-30 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Packet switching has emerged as a telecommunications technique with unlimited potential. Because it permits communications resources to be used at utmost efficiency, packet switching can adapt to a wide range of user services and user demands. Public packet switching networks have been built or are planned in more than 20 countries around the world, and numerous private and experimental networks are currently using packet switching. Presently packet switching is used primarily in connection with computer and data communication. However, its effectiveness for voice, video, and other wideband telecommunications services has been demonstrated, and as advanced data processing techniques improve the computer processors that form the heart of the packet switches, this application of the technique will undoubtedly become widespread. This book explains how packet networks operate, how they compare to alternative techniques, and how the many options in the design and use of packet networks are interrelated. The needs of both suppliers and users of packet net works are addressed throughout the book, particularly because one's viewpoint can have a significant impact on design choices.

Book Telecommunications and Networking

Download or read book Telecommunications and Networking written by Udo W. Pooch and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-05-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the dividing line between traditional computing science and telecommunications quickly becomes blurred or disappears in today's rapidly changing environment, there is an increasing need for computer professionals to possess knowledge of telecommunications principles. Telecommunications and Networking presents a comprehensive overview of the interaction and relationship between telecommunications and data processing. The book's early chapters cover basic telecommunications vocabulary, common nomenclature, telecommunications fundamentals, as well as the important relationships among coding, error detection and correction, and noise. Later chapters discuss such topics as switching, timing, topological structures, routing algorithms, and teleprocessing. Other topics covered in detail include specific concerns inherent to computer communications, such as protocols, error detection and correction, network monitoring and security, and system validation. System designers and programmers can no longer be effective simply by understanding the tradeoffs between hardware and software. Telecommunications and Networking provides both computing professionals and students the fundamental computer communications concepts necessary to function in today's computer industry.

Book Fundamentals of Digital Switching

Download or read book Fundamentals of Digital Switching written by John C. McDonald and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of the first edition of Fundamentals of Digital Switching in 1983, there has been substantial improvement in digital switching technology and in digital networks. Packet switching has advanced from a low-speed data-oriented switching approach into a robust broadband technology which supports services ranging from low-speed data to video. This technology has eclipsed the flexibility of circuit switching. Fiber optic cable has advanced since the first edition and has substantially changed the technology of transmission. to research in optical devices to find a still better means of This success has led switching. Digital switching systems continue to benefit from the 100-fold improvement in the capabilities of semiconductor devices which has occurred during the past decade. The chip industry forecasts a similar escalation in complexity during the next 10 years. Networks of switching systems have changed due to regulatory policy reform in many nations, including the breakup of the Bell System in the United States, the introduction of new types of carriers in Japan, competition in the United Kingdom, and a reexamination of public policy in virtually all nations. Standards bodies have been productive in specifying new capabilities for future networks involving interactive and distributive services through STM and A TM technologies.

Book Digital Transmission Systems

Download or read book Digital Transmission Systems written by David R. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the development of telecommunication networks throughout the world, digital transmission has now replaced analog transmission as the predominant choice for new transmission facilities. This trend began in the early 1960s when the American Telephone and Telegraph Company first introduced pulse code modulation as a means of increasing capacity in their cable plant. Since that time, digital transmission applications have grown dramatically, notably in the United States, Canada, Japan, and Western Europe. With the rapidity of digital transmission developments and imple mentation, however, there has been a surprising lack of textbooks written on the subject. This book grew out of my work, research, and teaching in digital transmission systems. My objective is to provide an overview of the subject. To accomplish this end, theory has been blended with practice in order to illustrate how one applies theoretical principles to actual design and imple mentation. The book has abundant design examples and references to actual systems. These examples have been drawn from common carriers, manufac turers, and my own experience. Considerable effort has been made to include up-to-date standards, such as those published by the CCITT and CCIR, and to interpret their recommendations in the context of present-day digital transmission systems.
