Book excerpt: Broadcast media, such as satellite, ground radio, and multipoint cable channels, can easily provide full connectivity for communication among geographically distributed users. One of the most important problems in the design of networks (referred to as packet broadcast networks) that can take practical advantage of broadcast channels is how to achieve efficient sharing of a single common channel. Many multiple access protocols, or algorithms, for packet broadcast networks have been proposed, and much work has been done on the performance evaluation of the protocols. A variety of techniques have been used to analyze the performance; however, this is the first book to provide a unified approach to the performance evaluation problem by means of an approximate analytical technique called equilibrium point analysis. Two types of packet broadcast networks - satellite networks and local area networks are considered, and eight multiple access protocols are studied and their performance analyzed in terms of throughput and average message delay. Book excerpt: The report considers a packet switching technique applicable to packet communication using a satellite or ground radio channel. The objective of this research is to develop analytic models for the evaluation and optimization of the system performance in terms of stability, throughput and delay. Advantages of packet switched satellite and ground radio systems over conventional wire communications for large computer-communication networks are discussed. The emphasis of this research is on a high-speed channel shared by a large population of 'small' users. The channel behavior is typical of 'contention' systems in which the throughput vanishes to zero as the load on the system increases. This phenomenon is called channel saturation. The channel may go into saturation as a result of (a) time fluctuations, and (b) stochastic fluctuations in the channel input. The channel response to time varying inputs is first studied using a deterministic approximation analysis. The effect of (b) is then studied through probabilistic models. (Modified author abstract).

Queueing networks and Markov chains are commonly used for the p- formance and reliability evaluation of computer, communication, and m- ufacturing systems. Although there are quite a few books on the individual topics of queueing networks and Markov chains, we have found none that covers the topics of discrete-time and continuous-time multichannel mul- traffic queueing networks. On the other hand, the design and development of multichannel mul- hop network systems and interconnected network systems or integrated n- works of multimedia traffic require not only such average performance m- sures as the throughput or packet delay but also higher moments of traffic departures and transmission delay.

This volume presents the proceedings of the second workshop on multiaccess, mobility and teletraffic for personal communications held in May 1996 in Paris, France where some important subjects on the next generation systems have been treated. These include topics dealing with information theoretic aspects, channel modeling, diversity, interference control, resource allocation, power control, packet multi-access, stochastic modeling of mobility and traffic, and wireless network control. The selected topics in this workshop and their presented set of solutions reflect the richness of the problems in wireless communications. Indeed, development of theoretical frameworks with considerable attention to the peculiar environment of wireless communications has been the prime objective of this workshop. To elaborate, consider the problem of multi-access methods which remains a challenge for researchers.
