Book excerpt: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (the WIC program) has promoted the health of low-income families for more than 30 years by providing nutrition education, supplemental food, and other valuable services. The program reaches millions of families every year, is one of the largest nutrition programs in the United States, and is an important investment in the nation's health. The U.S. Department of Agriculture charged the Institute of Medicine with creating a committee to evaluate the WIC food packages (the list of specific foods WIC participants obtain each month). The goal of the study was to improve the quality of the diet of WIC participants while also promoting a healthy body weight that will reduce the risk of chronic diseases. The committee concluded that it is time for a change in the WIC food packages and the book provides details on the proposed new food packages, summarizes how the proposed packages differ from current packages, and discusses the rationale for the proposed packages.

Book The Package King

Download or read book The Package King written by Joe Allen and published by Haymarket Books. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An incisive history” of how a bicycle messenger service in Seattle became a global behemoth, and the labor battles along the way (Dissent). We may see their trademark brown trucks everywhere today, but few people know the behind-the-scenes story of United Parcel Service and how it became one of America’s most admired companies. This book reveals how UPS managed to displace General Motors—the very symbol of American capitalism—to become the largest private-sector unionized employer in the United States; its long, tumultuous history with the International Brotherhood of Teamsters; and its effects on its workers and surrounding communities. It also explores the question of its future in the age of Amazon—as it battles to hold on to the throne of the Package King. “Get a copy of Allen’s book for yourself and then pass it on to a UPS driver the next time you get a delivery. She is part of the most organized section of what is possibly the most important industry in 21st-century capitalism, and the outcome of her story will have a lot to do with what our world looks like on the other side of this pandemic.” —Indypendent

Book Hands On Prescriptive Analytics

Download or read book Hands On Prescriptive Analytics written by Walter R. Paczkowski and published by "O'Reilly Media, Inc.". This book was released on 2024-10-17 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Business decisions in any context—operational, tactical, or strategic—can have considerable consequences. Whether the outcome is positive and rewarding or negative and damaging to the business, its employees, and stakeholders is unknown when action is approved. These decisions are usually made under the proverbial cloud of uncertainty. With this practical guide, data analysts, data scientists, and business analysts will learn why and how maximizing positive consequences and minimizing negative ones requires three forms of rich information: Descriptive analytics explores the results from an action—what has already happened. Predictive analytics focuses on what could happen. The third, prescriptive analytics, informs us what should happen in the future. While all three are important for decision-makers, the primary focus of this book is on the third: prescriptive analytics. Author Walter R. Paczkowski, Ph.D. shows you: The distinction among descriptive, predictive, and prescriptive analytics How predictive analytics produces a menu of action options How prescriptive analytics narrows the menu of action options The forms of prescriptive analytics: eight prescriptive methods Two broad classes of these methods: non-stochastic and stochastic How to develop prescriptive analyses for action recommendations Ways to use an appropriate tool-set in Python
