Book Social Status in the City

Download or read book Social Status in the City written by Bernice Neugarten and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Social Status in the City presents a scientific method for measuring social status in urban settings - the Index of Urban Status (IUS). The authors show how the index and the concepts of status on which it is based were derived by describing the procedures used in studying the social structure of a particular Midwestern city. Richard P. Coleman modified the IUS when he was employed in commerce research studies of social class phenomena in American cities.A social class is a group of people who are judged by members of the community as equal to one another in social prestige. They are believed to be either superior or inferior in prestige and acceptability to other groups who constitute the social classes that are below or above them. By this definition, Yankee City, Deep South, Jonesville, Kansas City - and presumably every community in the U.S. - can all be described as having social class systems. This book is a case study aimed at larger theoretical importance. The study should be considered in the context of sociology's concerns with problems of urban stratification, the characteristics of various social class groups, and the ways these groups change over time. In this context, the book makes a contribution to social science methods as well as observation. The authors have followed in the tradition of W. Lloyd Warner and others who have attempted to understand the status structures of whole communities. This classic volume has brilliantly stood the test of time."

Book Emotions in Culture and Everyday Life

Download or read book Emotions in Culture and Everyday Life written by Michael Hviid Jacobsen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes and analyses a series of emotions prevalent in everyday life and culture, with each chapter exploring the main facets of a particular emotion and considering the ways in which it manifests itself in and informs our culture and lives. Considering our expression, conception, management and sanctioning of emotions, and the ways in which these have changed over time, as well as the ways in which we can theorise particular emotional states, authors ask how certain emotions are linked to culture and society and what roles they play in politics and contemporary life. With examples and case studies taken from research into media, culture and social life, Emotions in Culture and Everyday Life will appeal to scholars of sociology, anthropology, psychology, media and cultural studies and philosophy with interests in the emotions.

Book Entanglements of Designing Social Innovation in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Entanglements of Designing Social Innovation in the Asia Pacific written by Yoko Akama and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-17 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in the places, cultures, histories, and wisdom of the diverse Asia-Pacific region, this book gathers heterogeneous practices of designing social innovation that address various social, political, and environmental challenges. In contrast to dominant notions of design from the Global North that evolved through industrialisation and modernist thinking, the examples in this book speak to designing that is embodied, relational, temporal, ontological, and entangled deeply with ecologies. This edited volume shares rich and detailed stories from Aotearoa New Zealand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Samoa, Thailand, Vanuatu and a continent now called Australia, that offer honest and critical reflections from practitioners and scholars on designing social innovation. Contributors explore issues of ethics, politics, and positionality in their work. This book highlights the importance of respecting multiple knowledge streams, worldviews, and practices situated in a place. This then supports a plurality of designing social innovation. In all, this book offers ways to sharpen focus on entangled pluralities as a central condition for designing. It is a contribution of hope and inspiration that are becoming more urgently needed in the volatile uncertainties of this world. This book will be of interest to scholars working in social innovation, service design, social design, participatory design, design anthropology, and Asian studies.
