Book excerpt: The objective of this program is to evaluate the primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) susceptibility of high chromium alloy 690 and its weld metals, establish quantitative measurements of crack-growth rates and determine relationships among cracking susceptibility, environmental conditions and metallurgical characteristics. Stress-corrosion, crack-growth rates have been determined for 12 alloy 690 specimens, 11 alloy 152/52/52M weld metal specimens, 4 alloy 52M/182 overlay specimens and 2 alloy 52M/82 inlay specimens in simulated PWR primary water environments. The alloy 690 test materials included three different heats of extruded control-rod-drive mechanism (CRDM) tubing with variations in the initial material condition and degree of cold work for one heat. Two cold-rolled (CR) alloy 690 plate heats were also obtained and evaluated enabling comparisons to the CR CRDM materials. Weld metal, overlay and inlay specimens were machined from industry mock ups to provide plant-representative materials for testing. Specimens have been tested for one alloy 152 weld, two alloy 52 welds and three alloy 52M welds. The overlay and inlay specimens were prepared to propagate stress-corrosion cracks from the alloy 182 or 82 material into the more resistant alloy 52M. In all cases, crack extension was monitored in situ by direct current potential drop (DCPD) with length resolution of about +1 æm making it possible to measure extremely low growth rates approaching 5x10-10 mm/s. Most SCC tests were performed at 325-360°C with hydrogen concentrations from 11-29 cc/kg; however, environmental conditions were modified during a few experiments to evaluate the influence of temperature, water chemistry or electrochemical potential on propagation rates. In addition, low-temperature (5̃0°C) cracking behavior was examined for selected alloy 690 and weld metal specimens. Extensive characterizations have been performed on material microstructures and stress-corrosion cracks by optical and electron microscopy techniques and linked to crack-growth test results to help define material and environmental parameters controlling SCC susceptibility.

Book excerpt: Susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of alloy C-22 and Ti Gr-12, two candidate alloys for the inner-container of the multi-barrier nuclear waste package, was evaluated by using the slow-strain-rate (SSR) test technique in a deaerated acidic brine (pH (almost equal to) 2.70) at 90 C. The strain rate used was 3.3 x 10−6 sec−1. Prior to being tested in the acidic brine, specimens of each alloy were pulled inside the test chamber in the dry condition at room temperature (RT). Then specimens were exposed to the test solution while being strained under different controlled electrochemical potentials. The magnitude of the controlled potential was selected based on the corrosion potential measured in the test solution prior to straining of the specimen. Results indicate that, for Ti Gr-12, the times to failure were significantly shorter compared to those for alloy C-22. Furthermore, Ti Gr-12 showed reduced ductility in terms of percent reduction in area and true fracture stress, as the controlled potential became more cathodic. Results also indicate that the time-to-failure and percent elongation reached the minimum values when Ti Gr-12 was tested under impressed potential of -1162 mV. Finally, metallographic examination was performed to evaluate the primary fracture, and the secondary cracking, if any, along the gage section of the broken tensile specimen.

Book excerpt: The slow strain-rate technique (SSRT) was used to investigate the susceptibility of several nickel-base and cobalt-base alloys to environmental stress cracking. This technique was successful in revealing the stress corrosion cracking (SCC) tendency of a given alloy in a specific environment. Yet, the measurable quantities (percent elongation, percent reduction in area, load at failure, and the total time to failure) were not always consistent indicators of the SCC phenomenon nor of its severity. Metallographic examination allowed to quantify the susceptibility to SCC through the measurement of the average "secondary stress corrosion crack" depth. The effects of strain rate, solution temperature, and solution concentration were clearly established using the SSRT. However, the effect of cold work on the susceptibility to hydroxide stress cracking was inconclusive. Also, the SSRT was not able to distinguish the SCC phenomenon from that of a "stress assisted intergranular corrosion" occurring on sensitized material.

Book excerpt: Susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of two candidate alloys for the inner container of the multibarrier nuclear waste package was evaluated by using wedge-loaded, precracked, double-cantilever-beam (DCB) specimens and the slow-strain-rate (SSR) test technique. Materials tested included Alloy C-22 and Ti Gr-12. A deaerated 90 C acidic brine (pH (almost equal to) 2.70) containing 5 weight percent NaCl was used as the test environment. Both DCB and SSR tensile specimens were machined from mill-annealed plate materials. No additional thermal treatments were given to these specimens prior to their being exposed to the test solution. The DCB testing was performed for periods ranging from one through eight months. The initial and final stress intensity factor (K{sub I} and K{sub f}) values were calculated using a standard fracture-mechanics equation. Fractographic evaluation of the broken DCB specimens was performed by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to analyze the characteristics of failures.
