Book Mapping Security in the Pacific

Download or read book Mapping Security in the Pacific written by Sara N Amin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines questions about the changing nature of security and insecurity in Pacific Island Countries (PICs). Previous discussions of security in the Pacific region have been largely determined by the geopolitical interests of the Global North. This volume instead attempts to centre PICs’ security interests by focussing on the role of organisational culture, power dynamics and gender in (in)security processes and outcomes. Mapping Security in the Pacific underscores the multidimensional nature of security, its relationship to local, international, organisational and cultural dynamics, the resistances engendered through various forms of insecurities, and innovative efforts to negotiate gender, context and organisational culture in reducing insecurity and enhancing justice. Covering the Pacific region widely, the volume brings forth context-specific analyses at micro-, meso- and macro-levels, allowing us to examine the interconnections between security, crime and justice, and point to the issues raised for crime and justice studies by environmental insecurity. In doing so, it opens up opportunities to rethink scholarly and policy frames related to security/insecurity about the Pacific. Written in a clear and direct style, this book will appeal to students and scholars in criminology, sociology, cultural studies, social theory and those interested in learning about the Pacific region and different aspects of security.

Book The Pacific Island States

Download or read book The Pacific Island States written by Stephen Henningham and published by Palgrave Macmillan. This book was released on 1995 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the volatile post Cold War era, the small, vulnerable states of the Pacific Islands region face major security and sovereignty challenges. Environmentally, the very existence of some of the island states is threatened by rising sea levels as a result of global warming. Economically, they mostly face continued dependence and increased poverty. Politically, they face challenges from secessionist and other internal conflicts. Strategically, while no longer 'sheltered' by the 'strategic denial' umbrella of the Cold War era, they are increasingly open to ripple effects from developments in Asia and the wider world. Meanwhile the interest and involvement of several aid donors have diminished. In this book a leading specialist examines trends and issues in the region over the last decade, and the uncertain prospects of the island states over the next. He emphasises political and military matters, including the role of external powers, but also considers environmental, economic and resources issues.

The contributors to this work explore why some forms of security cooperation and institutionalisation in the region have proven more feasible than others. This book was released on 2016-10-03 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pacific Island region, a cluster of 14 sovereign states with a population of only 9 million, far from both the mainland United States and the core of Asia, is perhaps the most overlooked region of the Asia-Pacific. The Pacific Islands deserve the United States' attention for the important roles that they play in regional security. Many remember the Pacific Island countries for the role they played during World War II. The Pacific Island states are also of economic interest, especially for the U.S. fishing industry, as the South Pacific supplies roughly one-third of the world's tuna. Chinese trade with the Pacific Island states is nearly 10 times larger than the United States. China has also targeted the Pacific Islands in its diplomatic efforts. Five years ago, the Secretary of State Hillary Clinton testified to Congress that the United States was in direct competition for influence in the Pacific Island region. But very little seems to have been done since then to bolster our position. Beijing, on the other hand, has made significant advances.

Book Change Interdependence and Security in the Pacific Basin

Download or read book Change Interdependence and Security in the Pacific Basin written by Dora Alves and published by University Press of the Pacific. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These selected papers from National Defense University?s 1990 Pacific Symposium deal with events in a vast area stretching from Japan to New Zealand and from Southeast Asia to the South Pacific islands in a year of momentous change. The apt theme of "change, interdependence, and security" echoes throughout the papers. Two thoughtful considerations of long-term US policy in the region lead off the collection, arguing that the United States needs to maintain the course of its fundamental policy. Successive papers address major issues by country and subregion. For example, one study looks at future relations between China and the great powers after the Tiananmen incident. Other essays raise serious questions about US-Japan security and economic relations into the 21st century, and several specialists examine how the end of the Cold War has raised hopes for stability on the Korean Peninsula and throughout Northeast Asia. Shifting the focus to Southeast Asia, other papers discuss improved prospects for security after a Cambodian settlement, and the outlook for democracy in the Philippines. Rounding out the volume, several authors delve into the security situation in Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific islands, as well as US and Soviet strategic interests there. Study of the Pacific - problematical in normal times because of the area?s vastness and diversity - has been further complicated recently by events in Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, and the Persian Gulf. This volume, like its parent symposium, provides a stable forum to continue assessing Pacific security despite increasingly unstable conditions elsewhere in the world. J. A. Baldwin Vice Admiral, U.S. Navy President, National Defense University

Book China s Engagement in the Pacific Islands

Download or read book China s Engagement in the Pacific Islands written by U S - China Security Review Commission and published by . This book was released on 2019-06-02 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Beijing steps up its global engagement under General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and President Xi Jinping, China is also increasing its involvement in the Pacific Islands region. Beijing's heightened engagement in the region in recent years is driven by its broader diplomatic and strategic interests, reducing Taiwan's international space, and gaining access to raw materials and natural resources. Although the Pacific Islands receive less of China's attention and resources compared to other areas of the world, Beijing includes the region in its key diplomatic and economic development policy-the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI)-which suggests China has geostrategic interests in the region. An April 2018 news report on purported discussions over a potential Chinese military base on Vanuatu, though denied by both countries, raises concerns that a Chinese base could be established in the Pacific Islands. Such a development could pose challenges to U.S. defense interests and those of Australia and New Zealand, key U.S. partners in the region. Over the last five years, Beijing has significantly bolstered its economic ties with the Pacific Islands. An examination of trade, investment, development assistance, and tourism data shows China has become one of the major players in the region, well ahead of the United States in most areas. Beijing concentrates much of its economic engagement, especially aid and tourism, among its eight diplomatic partners in the region, but recently it has also made inroads with other Pacific Island countries, including Taiwan's diplomatic partners. This paper is the product of professional research performed by staff of the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, and was prepared at the request of the Commission to support its deliberations. This compilation includes a reproduction of the 2019 Worldwide Threat Assessment of the U.S. Intelligence Community. China's inroads in Micronesia, where most of the United States' engagement in the Pacific Islands is concentrated, could threaten U.S. Compact of Free Association agreements with Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia over the long term. Some analysts are concerned China is trying to erode U.S. influence in the region to weaken the U.S. military presence and create an opening for Chinese military access. In the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), a U.S. territory near Guam in Micronesia, Chinese investors' casino resort developments could complicate U.S. Department of Defense plans in CNMI for extensive training and exercises resulting from the recent relocation of Marines from Okinawa, Japan.
