Understanding the environmental roles and responsibilities of women and men is critical to sustainable resource management practices. The chapters in the book reflect experiences with mainstreaming gender and women's issues in natural resources management. The introductory paper, focusing on the history and current status of gender and natural resources management, is followed by five further papers presenting cases of this approach, written by experts and practitioners from different parts of the world. The papers examine diverse natural resources from different perspectives, ranging from the household and community level to national and regional policy.
