This book was released on 1964 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The geared locomotive was born of sudden need back in the 1870's and the Shay was the first and most numerous of this bizarre breed. Its sound was enough to send the unitiated scurrying into the brush, for it gave the impression of a charging monster, flying past at a mile-a-minute speed. In actuality, though, the din of steam and metal was deceptive and bore little relation to its leisurely pace. The Shay locomotive attained its peak of popularity during the 1920s and no fewer than 500 of these machines were in use on the West Coast. The famous Pacific Coast type was first introduced in 1927 as a last-ditch effort to induce the western lumber industry to continue to log vast stands by Shay locomotives." --Fron inside of book jacket

Book The Willamette Locomotive

Download or read book The Willamette Locomotive written by Steve Hauff and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geared locomotive is important in the history of logging. It mechanized the transport of logs from forest to mill. The Willamette is but a footnote with only 33 ever built. Its impact belies the small number; it brought innovations later copied by the big players: Shay and Heisler. A useful and worthy contribution to the history of rail and logging. Book Bingham Canyon Railroads

Download or read book Bingham Canyon Railroads written by Don Strack and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-08-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Railroads and mining in Bingham Canyon have gone hand in hand since the first railroad was constructed in the canyon in late 1873. Bingham Canyon in the early years was a gold and silver mining camp, and the railroads were small operations. Copper mining took hold in the late 1890s, and the mines, mining companies, and railroads that served them expanded rapidly. Bingham Canyon soon became the largest and richest mining district in the western United States and was the source for as much as a third of the copper mined in the nation. A variety of locomotives worked in the canyon, including a small number of Shay locomotives, several large articulated steam locomotives, and the nation's largest roster of electric locomotives. The last Bingham Canyon ore train ran in late 2001. While the railroad tracks have been removed, the mine itself is very much in full production and remains the source for 25 percent of the nation's copper production.

Book Fishing on the Russian River

Download or read book Fishing on the Russian River written by Meghan Walla-Murphy and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Russian River tells a rich story of Sonoma County, both historically and ecologically. For as long as can be remembered, there has been an intimate relationship between the people of the Russian River and the fish, specifically the salmon and the steelhead. This tale of fishing begins with the Pomo people's communal fishing forays, winds through Russian exploration and early American settlement, and lands in the present time. For millennia, fishing has been a cultural cornerstone on the Russian River. Unfortunately, this once lively and productive salmonid fishery is dying. Overfishing, gravel mining, increased sedimentation from logging and agriculture, dams, and overdevelopment along the riverbanks and tributaries have all caused a decline in salmonid numbers. Thankfully, through collaborative efforts of local residents, nonprofit organizations, ranchers, farmers, and government agencies, fish populations are rebounding.

Book Oregon Northwestern Railroad

Download or read book Oregon Northwestern Railroad written by Jeff Moore and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1922, the US Forest Service offered one of the largest timber sales in the agencys history, encompassing 890 million board feet of mostly Ponderosa pine timber in the mountains north of Burns, Oregon. Among other requirements, the sale terms required the successful bidder to build and operate 80 miles of common carrier railroad through some of the most remote and undeveloped country in the state. The Fred Herrick Lumber Company and its Malheur Railroad initially won the bidding, only to lose it when a crash in the lumber market forced the company into insolvency. The Edward Hines Lumber Company of Chicago picked up the pieces, and from 1929 until 1984, its subsidiary Oregon & Northwestern Railroad made a living hauling logs, lumber, and occasional livestock between Burns and Seneca, Oregon.
