Book Pacific Beach Through Time

Download or read book Pacific Beach Through Time written by John Fry and published by America Through Time. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded as a college community in 1887, Pacific Beach was a rural suburb of San Diego during the first part of the twentieth century. WWII brought a five-fold increase in its population and it became a community of family homes. In the latter part of the century those homes were increasingly replaced with apartment buildings, and the population changed to young people looking for "fun in the sun." That trend has only increased in this early part of this century. Old structures disappear on a daily basis, replaced with businesses catering to a younger crowd. Only a few homes survive from the town's earliest years and a handful of business buildings from the 1920s. Unlike the solid brick buildings in the East, structures in Pacific Beach change, and change, and change again. Color photos of "the old Pacific Beach" are a treat to young and old.

Book Originally Pacific Beach

Download or read book Originally Pacific Beach written by John Webster and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-11-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pacific Beach, now a lively suburb of San Diego, began as a quiet college town (today's popular watering-hole was then proud to have no saloons). The community also once hosted one of San Diego's most important industrial sites and its premier sports venue, and all of this was tied together and connected to downtown by the latest in public transit. Hundreds of acres of prime agricultural land produced carloads of fruit, and later flowers, and then much of it was expropriated to house thousands of wartime defense workers. Along the way, generations of 'manly boys' were introduced to military drill and discipline while 'pretty and popular girls' enjoyed elegant garden parties at a beachfront mansion (and they sometimes met, and even married). Virtually nothing from this earlier era remains to be seen in Pacific Beach today; even the most monumental landmarks have disappeared. But records and accounts buried in the archives for a century or more have now been brought to light, and these long-gone days brought to life, in 'Originally Pacific Beach: Looking Back at the Heritage of a Unique Community' (a few landmarks have survived too, if you know where to look).

Download or read book Traveling through Time written by M Gerard Fromm and published by Phoenix Publishing House. This book was released on 2022-02-16 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bullets don't just travel through skin and bone. They travel through time." These words were tattooed onto the shoulder of a young woman whose father was shot during "The Troubles" in Northern Ireland. This wrenching, volatile but also binding truth is the subject of this book. It's a truth about traumatic experiences that happen to a family, but also to a society, and to the organizations that link these intimate units with the larger context of history and culture. It's also a truth about the way trauma plays out over time, including between generations. Grounded in Erik Erikson's "way of looking at things", the book is a journal of encounters between clinical psychoanalysis and other disciplines, and an inquiry into what might be learned there for both. Sometimes that learning has to do with trauma: the way in which what can't be emotionally contained, thought about or spoken in one part of a system is passed along, with disorganizing, sometimes heartbreaking consequences, to another. After a reflection on dignity, the book examines intergenerational trauma in families, including Erikson's. It then illustrates how trauma to organizations slips below the threshold of awareness and yet continues to wear down its members. The final section examines aspects of the larger society, including radicalization, war trauma, the pandemic and cultural healing. What emerges is the sober yet hopeful truth that what people discover by taking their own emotional experiences seriously, though that might markedly differ from what is accepted in the everyday world, is a primary path toward recovery from trauma.

Book Paradise of the Pacific

Download or read book Paradise of the Pacific written by Susanna Moore and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2015-09 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Hawaii may be said to be the story of arrivals -- from the eruption of volcanoes on the ocean floor 18,000 feet below to the first hardy seeds that over millennia found their way to the islands, and the confused birds blown from their migratory routes. Early Polynesian adventurers sailed across the Pacific in double canoes. Spanish galleons en route to the Philippines and British navigators in search of a Northwest Passage were soon followed by pious Protestant missionaries, shipwrecked sailors, and rowdy Irish poachers escaped from Botany Bay -- all wanderers washed ashore. This is true of many cultures, but in Hawaii, no one seems to have left. And in Hawaii, a set of myths accompanied each of these migrants -- legends that shape our understanding of this mysterious place. Susanna Moore pieces together the story of late-eighteenth-century Hawaii -- its kings and queens, gods and goddesses, missionaries, migrants, and explorers -- a not-so-distant time of abrupt transition, in which an isolated pagan world of human sacrifice and strict taboo, without a currency or a written language, was confronted with the equally ritualized world of capitalism, Western education, and Christian values.

Book excerpt: Retired pro football quarterback Tommy Quinn has a few issues-recurring concussions, a beach house with tons of deferred maintenance, zero ambition, and a signing bonus squeezed by partying and tequila. It doesn't stop there. Tommy's ex-girlfriend, supermodel Aya, is on the run after her new boyfriend is found brutally murdered. Turns out he welshed on a big-time hood and Aya has the proof. Just to make matters worse, the cops won't leave Tommy alone, based on the assumption that Aya might contact her old flame. Tommy's resting easy because he knows something they don't-that he's a deadbeat and she would never look to him for protection. But as usual, Tommy's mistaken, and it lands him in some very pretty places with some very ugly people . Tommy finds himself pulled into a wild ride pitting him against a sadistic killer, crank heads that redefine the word loser, wise guys, and all-around oddballs in this raunchy roller-coaster. It's Paradise with a kick. "Pacific Beach Blues is terrific! Smart, intense, vivid, and the plot unfolds and twists nicely." -Steve Kuusisto, National Book Award Nominee, Planet of the Blind

The picturesque blend of beach and forest along the river, Willapa Bay, and the Pacific Ocean was home to the Chinook Indians who first settled this region. European and American trade came to this area in the 18th century, opening the way for Lewis and Clark to explore and establish a land route to the Pacific. The region prospered because of its diverse natural resources and thriving fur trade. Today, a vibrant tourist industry fuels the Peninsula's continuing development.

Book The Pacific Muse

  • Author : Patty O'Brien
  • Publisher : University of Washington Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780295986098
  • Pages : 372 pages

Download or read book The Pacific Muse written by Patty O'Brien and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "While examining colonial culture in its many manifestations, from art, literature, and film to the journals of explorers and missionaries, O'Brien rereads not only the canonical texts of Pacific imperialism, but also lesser-known remnants of this cultural heritage with an eye to what they reveal about gender, sexuality, race, and femininity. Over its long history - from the famous (and much romanticized) settlement of Tahitian women and mutineers from the Bounty on Pitcairn Island in 1789 to the South Seas romantic tradition, Gauguin, and beach culture - notions of female primitivism changed in response to the ideological watersheds of Christianity, Enlightenment science, and race theories, as well as the development of democratic nation-states, modernity, and colonialism.
