The basis for the theory described in this paper is an article by Henley, Richards, and Yu. Values for all constants are taken from Henley's paper, unless otherwise indicated. The experiment was done by Brian Corey. R. E. Warner, and others using the NASA-Lewis cyclotron, with runs in summer 1968 and December, 1968. As indicated in the notation 3He(d,tp)p, the deuteron is incident on 3He, and the triton and one proton are detected. The kinematic regions of interest are those for which the p-p final state interaction is expected to be most important; that is, when the outgoing protons have low relative energy.

For comparison the 4He(d, alpha)pn reaction is investigated, in which isospin conservation should strongly inhibit the s-wave, singlet p-n final-state interaction.

Book excerpt: A kinematically unique two-parameter experiment was used to search for resonant interactions between pairs of particles in the three-body final states of the reactions studied. The center-of-mass excitation range was from 20.5 to 29.3 MeV above the 4He ground states for the t + p system, and from 21.0 to 29.1 MeV above the 4He ground state for the t + n system. The reaction 3He(d, tp)1H with 15-MeV incident deuterons yielded a distinct resonance in the t + p system at 21.5 +̲ 0.1 MeV, with a width of approximately 1 Mev. For this same reaction with 20-MeV incident deuterons, the peak cross section for this t + p resonance shifted to 22.0 +̲ 0.2 MeV, with a width of approximately 2 MeV. There is weak evidence that this latter resonance can be resolved into resonances at approximately 21.6 and 22.2 MeV. Data from the reaction 3H(d, tp)n, which were obtained with 20-MeV incident deuterons, are also consistent with the existence of a broad resonance in the t + p system at approximately 22 MeV above the 4He ground state. The reaction 2H(t, tp)n was run with 21-MeV tritons; however, the breakup spectra are unfortunately dominated by phase space and the spectator pole-type breakup of the deuteron. Evidence for other possible resonances is inconclusive.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of an International Conference on "Spin and Isospin in Nuclear Interactions", which was held in Telluride, Colorado USA, 11-15 March 1991. This was the fifth in a series of conferences held in Telluride every three years since 1979. In attendance at the conference were just under 100 participants, representing a total of 43 institutes from 12 different countries. In keeping with previous Telluride conferences, the role of spin and isospin degrees of freedom in both nuclear structure and nuclear interactions remained an important theme. Topics covered included new results on the spin- and isospin-dependent terms in the free and effective nucleon-nucleon interaction, Gamow-Teller excitations, charge and spin exchange with hadronic probes, and spin measurements with leptonic probes. Recent progress in the development of polarized sources, polarized targets, and po larimetry was also discussed, as were applications to neutrino physics and astrophysics. Whereas earlier Telluride conferences had dealt primarily with nucleon-nucleus inter actions, this meeting included extensive discussions on the role of spin and flavor in particle interactions, and on ways of "bridging the gap" between concepts usually as sociated with particle physics and the domain of more conventional nuclear physics. The conference consisted of morning and evening scientific sessions, leaving the afternoons free for informal discussions, recreation, and enjoyment of the scenic beauty of the Telluride area. In addition to the invited talks, time was allotted for contributed talks on new results.

Special sessions were also devoted to the application of the results and techniques of the few-particle research to the problems of other fields, in particular nuclear structure and astrophysics. The conference was organized into nine plenary sessions and 13 parallel sessions. This volume contains 184 papers presented during the nine sessions on the following topics: the nucleon-nucleon interaction; three-body forces; hypernuclear systems; symmetries; three-body problems; multiparticle reactions; proposed studies of few-nucleon systems with meson factories; few-nucleon systems and leptons, mesons, and photons; and applications.
