Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Maeterlinck, the blindness is symbolic of the human condition: The group of blind men and women have been led out from the institution in which they live on an outing by a priest, a man they seem to trust, but who has inexplicably left them helpless and fled. Maurice Maeterlinck (1862 -1949) was a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist. He was a Fleming, but wrote in French. His plays form an important part of the Symbolist movement. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911 "in appreciation of his many-sided literary activities, and especially of his dramatic works, which are distinguished by a wealth of imagination and by a poetic fancy, which reveals, sometimes in the guise of a fairy tale, a deep inspiration, while in a mysterious way they appeal to the readers' own feelings and stimulate their imaginations."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Example in this ebook ACT I A Gallery in Merlin's Palace [Merlin is seated near Arielle, who is sleeping on the steps of a marble staircase. It is night. Merlin. You sleep, my Arielle, you my inner force, the neglected power which slumbers in every soul and which I alone, till now, awaken at will.... You sleep, my docile and familiar little fairy, and your hair, straying like a blue mist, invisible to men, mingles with the moon, the perfumes of the night, the rays of the stars, the roses that shed their petals, the spreading sky, to remind us thus that nothing separates us from any existing thing and that our thought does not know where the light begins for which it hopes, nor where the shadow ends which it escapes.... You are sleeping soundly and, while you sleep, I lose all my knowledge and become like my blind brethren, who do not yet know that on this earth there are as many hidden gods as there are hearts that throb.... Alas, I am to them the genius to be avoided, the wicked sorcerer in league with their enemies!... They have no enemies, but only subjects who know not where to find their king.... They are persuaded that my secret virtue, which is obeyed by the plants and the stars, by water, stone and fire and to which the future at times reveals some of its features: they are persuaded that this new and yet so human virtue is hidden in philtres, in horrible charms, in hellish herbs and awful signs.... No, it is in myself, even as it resides in them; it is in you, my frail Arielle, in you who were once in me.... I have taken two or three bolder steps in the dark.... I have done a little earlier what they will do later.... All things will be subject to them when they have learnt at last to revive your goodwill, even as I have revived it.... But it were vain for me to tell them that you are sleeping here and to point to your dazzling grace: they would not see you.... Each one of them must find you within himself; each one of them must open as I do the tomb of his life and come to awake you as I awake you now.... [He bends over Arielle and kisses her. Arielle. (Waking.) Master!... Merlin. This is the hour, Arielle, when love must watch.... I shall often trouble your sleep in these coming days.... Arielle. My sleep was so long that I am always relapsing into it; but I feel stronger and become happier at each new awakening that your thought imposes on me.... To be continue in this ebook

Book Mimomania

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mary Ann Smart
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 2004-03-10
  • ISBN : 9780520939875
  • Pages : 262 pages

Download or read book Mimomania written by Mary Ann Smart and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2004-03-10 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Nietzsche dubbed Richard Wagner "the most enthusiastic mimomaniac" ever to exist, he was objecting to a hollowness he felt in the music, a crowding out of any true dramatic impulse by extravagant poses and constant nervous movements. Mary Ann Smart suspects that Nietzsche may have seen and heard more than he realized. In Mimomania she takes his accusation as an invitation to listen to Wagner's music—and that of several of his near-contemporaries—for the way it serves to intensify the visible and the enacted. As Smart demonstrates, this productive fusion of music and movement often arises when music forsakes the autonomy so prized by the Romantics to function mimetically, underlining the sighs of a Bellini heroine, for instance, or the authoritarian footsteps of a Verdi baritone. Mimomania tracks such effects through readings of operas by Auber, Bellini, Meyerbeer, Verdi, and Wagner. Listening for gestural music, we find resemblance in unexpected places: between the overwrought scenes of supplication in French melodrama of the 1820s and a cluster of late Verdi arias that end with the soprano falling to her knees, or between the mute heroine of Auber’s La Muette de Portici and the solemn, almost theological pantomimic tableaux Wagner builds around characters such as Sieglinde or Kundry. Mimomania shows how attention to gesture suggests a new approach to the representation of gender in this repertoire, replacing aural analogies for voyeurism and objectification with a more specifically musical sense of how music can surround, propel, and animate the body on stage.

Book Tomorrow s Eve

    Book Details:
  • Author : Auguste comte de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 1982
  • ISBN : 9780252069550
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Tomorrow s Eve written by Auguste comte de Villiers de L'Isle-Adam and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Take one inventive genius indebted to the friend who saved his life; add an English aristocrat hopelessly consumed with a selfish and spiritually bankrupt woman; stir together with a Faustian pact to create the perfect woman--and voilà! Tomorrow's Eve is served. Robert Martin Adams's graceful translation is the first to bring to English readers this captivating fable of a Thomas Edison-like inventor and his creation, the radiant and tragic android Hadaly. Adams's introduction sketches the uncompromising idealism of the proud but penurious aristocrat Jean Marie Mathias Philippe Auguste, Count Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, a friend and admired colleague of Charles Baudelaire, Stèphane Mallarmé, and Richard Wagner. Villiers dazzles us with a gallery of electronic wonders while unsettling us with the implications of his (and our) increasingly mechanized and mechanical society. A witty and acerbic tale in which human nature, spiritual values, and scientific possibilities collide, Tomorrow's Eve retains an enduring freshness and edge." --Descripción del editor.
