Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rarely has a Dutch architect so characterized an era as Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921), not only for such landmark buildings as the Rijksmuseum and the Central Station in Amsterdam, but also for his numerous neo-Gothic Catholic churches, which are now intimately associated with the popular conception of Dutch cities and villages. Cuypers' controversial views on restoration, his plea for a revaluation of Gothic architecture and his influence on H.P. Berlage and Michiel de Klerk make him the most important Dutch architect of his time. Not only did he leave a quantitative mark on the built environment of the Netherlands, he elevated the quality of Dutch architecture generally, and established a precedent for the modern architecture firm. This beautifully designed publication unlocks Cuypers' complete oeuvre for the first time. A selection of essays sheds light on the scope and significance of his work, and hundreds of photos, designs and maps make this book definitive and complete. The son of a church painter, Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921) was born in Roermond, the Netherlands. In 1852, he opened a workshop for the manufacture of ecclesiastical art, but quickly moved into architectural work. As well as creating some of Amsterdam's most beloved buildings, he built over 100 churches and restored countless others.

Book excerpt: Experimentation and Dutch design have long gone hand in hand, from postage stamps to the Rietveld chair to the clean simplicity of Schiphol airport. Mienke Simon Thomas skillfully details the groundbreaking accomplishments and popular products of Dutch design in Dutch Design Culture. Thomas, a museum curator, delves deeply into the rich design history of the Netherlands, beginning with the historical roots of Dutch crafts education and the moral and social ideals of modernism that became central to the nation’s cultural dialogue. Touching upon such issues as the emergence of the professional industrial designer, public work initiatives, debates about design as art, and the provocative notion of “anti-design,” Thomas argues that though Dutch design from the beginning has been driven by aims of functionality, simplicity, and affordability, it has also embraced luxury and exclusivity. The book also discusses the role played by leading Dutch designers and their works, including Wim Crouwel, Marcel Wanders, and the design collective Droog Design. An unprecedented, detailed history, Dutch Design Culture is a critical primer on one of the leading national design movements today.

Book Urban Forms

  • Author : Ivor Samuels
  • Publisher : Routledge

  • ISBN : 1136350268
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Urban Forms written by Ivor Samuels and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This popular and influential work, translated here into English for the first time, argues that modern urbanism has upset the morphology of cities, abolished their streets and isolated their buildings. In tracing the stages of this transformation, this book presents the view that the urban tissue, the intermediate scale between the architecture of buildings and the diagrammatic layouts of town planning, is the essential framework for everyday life. Only by investigating the urban tissue will it be possible to understand the complex relationships between plot and built form, between streets and buildings and between these forms and design practices. The chosen trail of the first French edition - Paris, London, Amsterdam, Frankfurt - is one of continuously evolving modernity. It outlines a history, which, in one century (1860-1960), completely changed the aspect of our towns and cities and transformed our way of life. The shock has been such that we are still looking for answers, still attempting to find urban forms that can accommodate present day ways of life and at the same time maintain the qualities of the traditional town. This English edition brings the story forward to the present day and considers the impact of the New Urbanism in the United States, which, over the last decade, has sought to re-establish former relationships within the urban tissue.

Book Building musical culture in Nineteenth century Amsterdam

Download or read book Building musical culture in Nineteenth century Amsterdam written by Darryl Cressman and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When people attend classical music concerts today, they sit and listen in silence, offering no audible reactions to what they're hearing. We think of that as normal-but, as Darryl Cressman shows in this book, it's the product of a long history of interrelationships between music, social norms, and technology. Using the example of Amsterdam's Concertgebouw in the nineteenth century, Cressman shows how its design was in part intended to help discipline and educate concert audiences to listen attentively - and analysis of its creation and use offers rich insights into sound studies, media history, science and technology studies, classical music, and much more.
