Download or read book International Handbook of Emotions in Education written by Reinhard Pekrun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-16 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than a decade, there has been growing interest and research on the pivotal role of emotions in educational settings. This ground-breaking handbook is the first to highlight this emerging field of research and to describe in detail the ways in which emotions affect learning and instruction in the classroom as well as students’ and teachers’ development and well-being. Informed by research from a number of related fields, the handbook includes four sections. Section I focuses on fundamental principles of emotion, including the interplay among emotion, cognition, and motivation, the regulation of emotion, and emotional intelligence. Section II examines emotions and emotion regulation in classroom settings, addressing specific emotions (enjoyment, interest, curiosity, pride, anxiety, confusion, shame, and boredom) as well as social-emotional learning programs. Section III highlights research on emotions in academic content domains (mathematics, science, and reading/writing), contextual factors (classroom, family, and culture), and teacher emotions. The final section examines the various methodological approaches to studying emotions in educational settings. With work from leading international experts across disciplines, this book synthesizes the latest research on emotions in education.

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this book is to take a closer look at how students and teachers in educational institutions apply the innovative, the playful and the emotional and creative dimensions of learning. With this contribution, the authors aim at reaching an international audience of educators at several levels, including primary and secondary schools, higher and adult education, university colleges, graduate, undergraduate and PhD schools. Driven by the common interest of the authors to reflect on emotions in education, the chapters in this book encompass multiple perspectives: the socio-cultural perspective that looks at interactions among individuals; the creation and recreation of the self and others; and the study of collaboration, change processes and aesthetic and creative learning. This anthology offers original empirical documentation and theoretical reflections on how pedagogical and educational changes might challenge or facilitate learning for students and educators. Besides its relevance within the education sector, the content presented here can be applied in non-formal learning environments, such as museums, cultural institutions, as well as other educational settings where emotions are largely stimulated and cultivated.

Megan Boler combines cultural history with ethical and multicultural analyses to explore how emotions have been disciplined, suppressed, or ignored at all levels of education and in educational theory. FEELING POWER charts the philosophies and practices developed over the last century to control social conflicts arising from gender, class, and race. The book traces the development of progressive pedagogies from civil rights and feminist movements to Boler's own recent studies of emotional intelligence and emotional literacy. Drawing on the formulation of emotion as knowledge within feminist, psychobiological, and post structuralist theories, Boler develops a unique theory of emotion missing from contemporary educational discourses.

Book New Understandings of Teacher s Work

Download or read book New Understandings of Teacher s Work written by Christopher Day and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Within educational research that seeks to understand the quality and effectiveness of teachers and school, the role emotions play in educational change and school improvement has become a subject of increasing importance. In this book, scholars from around the world explore the connections between teaching, teacher education, teacher emotions, educational change and school leadership. (For this text, “teacher” encompasses pre-service teachers, in-service teachers and headteachers, or principals). New Understandings of Teacher’s Work: Emotions and Educational Change is divided into four themes: educational change; teachers and teaching; teacher education; and emotions in leadership. The chapters address the key basic and substantive issues relative to the central emotional themes of the following: teachers’ lives and careers in teaching; the role emotions play in teachers’ work; lives and leadership roles in the context of educational reform; the working conditions; the context-specific dynamics of reform work; school/teacher cultures; individual biographies that affect teachers’ emotional well-being; and the implications for the management and leadership of educational change, and for development, of teacher education.

Book Teaching with Emotion

Download or read book Teaching with Emotion written by Michalinos Zembylas and published by IAP. This book was released on 2006-04-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to provide new theoretical, methodological and empirical directions in research on teacher emotion. An attempt is made to encourage a missing conversation in the area of emotions in teaching, by invoking a discussion of ideas that explore how discursive, political and cultural aspects define the experience of teacher emotion. I begin to build an analysis upon which the role of emotion, emotional rules and emotional labor in curriculum and teaching might be investigated. This book includes both conceptual chapters and chapters based on empirical work—and, in particular, a three-year ethnographic study with an early childhood teacher in the context of science teaching—that together illustrate new approaches and perspectives in researching and theorizing about emotion in teaching Essentially, then, there are two overlapping aims in this book. First, to critically examine some of the contemporary ways in which emotions have been conceptualized and understood in teaching; and second, to explore the role of emotion in teaching through different methodologies and theorizations.

Book Mindfulness and Learning

    Book Details:
  • Author : Terry Hyland
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-08-21
  • ISBN : 9400719116
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book Mindfulness and Learning written by Terry Hyland and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-21 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent decades, education at all levels has been seriously impoverished by a growing obsession with standards, targets, skills and competences. According to this model, only a circumscribed range of basic cognitive skills and competences are the business of education, whose main role is to provide employability credentials for people competing for jobs in the global economy. The result is a one-dimensional, economistic and bleakly utilitarian conception of the educational task. In Mindfulness and Learning: Celebrating the Affective Dimension of Education, Terry Hyland advances the thesis that education stands in need of a rejuvenation of its affective function – the impact it has on the emotional, social, moral and personal development of learners. Drawing on the Buddhist conception of mindfulness, he advances a powerful argument for redressing this imbalance by enhancing the affective domain of learning. Mindfulness and Learning: Celebrating the Affective Dimension of Education shows how the concept and practice of ‘mindfulness’ – non-judgmental, present moment awareness and experience – can enrich learning at all levels. Mindfulness thus contributes to the enhanced achievement of general educational goals, and helps remedy the gross deficiency of the affective/emotional aspects of contemporary theory and practice. The author outlines a mindfulness-based affective education (MBAE) programme and shows how it might be introduced into educational provision from the early years to adult education with a view to harmonising the cognitive-affective balance across the system.
