Book Anthropogenic Vs Natural Pollution

Download or read book Anthropogenic Vs Natural Pollution written by Laramie Colvin and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research begins by exploring the previous research on natural sources of particulate matter in the air and then investigates the status for California’s air quality in the last 10 years. The natural sources of particulate matter include sea-salt aerosol, windblown dust, and smoke from fires. California is the only state that adopted more stringent standards for particulate matter than EPA currently has for all of the USA. The goal for the present work is to identify which natural sources of particulate matter pollution are present in large amounts in California and determine if they are too great for California’s regulations to be attainable. This research focuses on the South Coast and San Diego Air Basins and a case study of San Diego is conducted for the EPA exceedances during the 10-year study period, by using mathematical models and verification through observed meteorological data. The models used were NOAA’s Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory model or HYSPLIT. This output was confirmed by surface observations from the closest METARs and nearest upper air soundings for selected cases. Of the 3 known sources of natural particulates, sea-salt aerosol and wildfire smoke were the significant natural sources of particulate matter pollution from the 10-year study. The results from the case study suggest that the natural sources of particulate matter present in California may be affecting the attainability of its own imposed PM10regulations.

Book Perspectives in Life Cycle Impact Assessment

Download or read book Perspectives in Life Cycle Impact Assessment written by Patrick Hofstetter and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspectives in Life Cycle Impact Assessment: A Structured Approach to Combine Models of the Technosphere, Ecosphere and Valuesphere describes the relationship between subjective and objective elements in Life Cycle Impact Assessment. It suggests a new framework which will allow people to master two of the major problems associated with LCA, the difficulty of separating subjective from objective elements and the tendency for impact assessment to record `phantoms' rather than actual damages. Perspectives in Life Cycle Impact Assessment: A Structured Approach to Combine Models of the Technosphere, Ecosphere and Valuesphere presents a proposal for a second generation framework and method for Life Cycle Impact Assessment. Many of the suggested elements are either based on other tools for environmental analysis, e.g. risk assessment, or fit in well with tools and concepts such as industrial ecology, technology assessment, or environmental impact assessment. The research presented in this book goes beyond the scope of presently used methods for Life Cycle Assessment and may stimulate new developments in a variety of areas. The book will appeal to persons from a wide range of scientific disciplines who are interested in learning more about Life Cycle Assessment. It will be especially valuable to members of SETAC and to students and researchers in the fields of environmental impact assessment, risk assessment and industrial ecology.
