Book excerpt: Ozarks Sonatina is a three-movement recital suite that visits the state of Arkansas. The dulcimer, a popular folk instrument, is highlighted in the first movement, "The Hammered Dulcimer." The repeated notes in this movement represent the two hammers that sometimes bounce on the same note repeatedly. With its relaxed, lyrical style, the second movement visits the natural treasures of the three national forests in the state. The city of Hot Springs is featured in the final movement. People have traveled to Hot Springs for centuries to take advantage of the therapeutic spring water, which contains a high degree of mineral content. The quickly flowing movement in 6/8 meter features hand crossings.
Download or read book Suite Sounds Around the Finger Lakes written by Catherine Rollin and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 2016-07-20 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of Alfred's Recital Suite Series, Suite Sounds Around the Finger Lakes explores the central region of New York state. Each of the three movements depicts different aspects of the area. In "The Wondrous Finger Lakes," students will create the effect of lightly rippling water in the left-hand accompaniment as the right hand plays a lyrical melody. The second movement, "Hoops Victory: Go Orange!" recreates the excitement of a Syracuse University basketball game, complete with an opening fanfare of rhythmic chords followed by the sound of a dribbling basketball, created using repeated staccato notes. The suite is completed with "Syracuse Snowfall," the musical version of gently falling snow that turns into a snow storm, created using delicate broken chords that become lively and brisk triplets.

Download or read book Traditional World Music Influences in Contemporary Solo Piano Literature written by Elizabeth C. Axford and published by Rlpg/Galleys. This book was released on 1997 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Everything But Bach, Beethoven and Brahms," comprises this multicultural repertoire guide for pianists, composers, music teachers and students, world music enthusiasts and scholars. It identifies pieces in the contemporary solo piano literature which show world music influences not traditionally associated with the standard repertoire of Western European art music. The resulting annotated bibliography therefore includes pieces which use or attempt to emulate non-Western scales, modes, folk tunes, rhythmic, percussive or harmonic devices and timbres. Axford highlights the music cultures of the Middle East and North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, India, the Far East, Indonesia, Oceania, ethnic North America, Latin America and Spain, and Eastern Europe, Russia, and Scandinavia. Separate bibliographies for each world music region show examples of contemporary solo piano pieces that demonstrate some of the traditional musical influences associated with the region.
