Rare and recently discovered photographs depict some of the area's largest fires, as well as its many innovations, from Provincetown's first Hunneman hand pumper, known as the "George Washington," to the brush breakers uniquely designed to respond to the Cape's devastating forest fires. Cape Cod fire departments also developed rescue squads that eventually evolved into the first emergency medical service system in Massachusetts to use paramedics. The images in Cape Cod Firefighting offer a tribute to the people and events that have shaped Cape Cod's fire rescue service.

Book excerpt: This book describes the daily life of a 15 year old boy spending two summers working at the Oyster Harbors Caddy Camp in Osterville on Cape Cod, Mass. The camp was established in 1947 by the YMCA to provide a reliable source of trained caddies for the Oyster Harbors Golf Club and, at the same time, reinforce important values for 72 teenage boys from the Boston area. The boys were assigned 12 to a cabin and worked every day caddying on the golf course to pay for their room and board. They awoke to reville at 6:30 AM, ate their meals at the mess hall, wore tan uniforms on the golf course, cleaned up after every meal and went to bed at 9:30 PM to taps. Each cabin competed in a full season of athletics (basketball, softball, flag football, ping pong, golf) and two tournaments (swimming and track). The boys learned the importance of team work, discipline, hard work, thrift, honesty and respect for one another. They received a tremendous grounding in how to behave properly and prosper in their middle teen years. Most boys learned many valuable lessons from the golf members who very kindly coached and counseled them about the importance of education and hard work.
