Download or read book Assessment of Long Term Health Effects of Antimalarial Drugs When Used for Prophylaxis written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2020-04-24 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the many who serve in the United States Armed Forces and who are deployed to distant locations around the world, myriad health threats are encountered. In addition to those associated with the disruption of their home life and potential for combat, they may face distinctive disease threats that are specific to the locations to which they are deployed. U.S. forces have been deployed many times over the years to areas in which malaria is endemic, including in parts of Afghanistan and Iraq. Department of Defense (DoD) policy requires that antimalarial drugs be issued and regimens adhered to for deployments to malaria-endemic areas. Policies directing which should be used as first and as second-line agents have evolved over time based on new data regarding adverse events or precautions for specific underlying health conditions, areas of deployment, and other operational factors At the request of the Veterans Administration, Assessment of Long-Term Health Effects of Antimalarial Drugs When Used for Prophylaxis assesses the scientific evidence regarding the potential for long-term health effects resulting from the use of antimalarial drugs that were approved by FDA or used by U.S. service members for malaria prophylaxis, with a focus on mefloquine, tafenoquine, and other antimalarial drugs that have been used by DoD in the past 25 years. This report offers conclusions based on available evidence regarding associations of persistent or latent adverse events.
Download or read book Oxytetracycline Efficacy Against Bacterial Infections in Blue and Channel Catfishes written by Jordan A. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxytetracycline (Terramycin) was reported by Snieszko (158) as an effective therapeutic for the treatment of bacterial diseases of warmwater fish. Subsequent reports gave additional evidence that when used as a feed additive, this drug was effective against bacterial infections normally encountered in warmwater fishes. Routine in vitro drug sensitivity tests of aeromonad, pseudomonad, and myxobacterial species isolated from diseased fish at the Fish Farming Experimental Station since 1964 indicate Terramycin is consistently effective against warmwater fish pathogens.

Download or read book Oxytetracycline Efficacy as a Treatment for Furunculosis in Coho Salmon written by Donald F. Amend and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coho salmon were infected with Aeromonas salmonicida (furunculosis) and treated with oxytetracycline at different stages of disease severity to determine the drug efficacy. The disease was controlled but the degree of control depended on when treatment started. The longer treatment was delayed after infection, the less effective was the treatment. However, it was concluded that feeding 3.5 gm oxytetracycline per 100 pounds of fish per day for 10 days was an effective way of controlling furunculosis in coho salmon.
Download or read book Oxytetracycline Levels Produced in Catfish Serum by Three Methods of Treatment written by James H. Fribourgh and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three general methods where oxytetracycline (Terramycin) may be administered to fish. The drug can be injected; it can be introduced into the stomach by means of a balling gun or by intubation; or it can be incorporated into feed. It is the purpose of this report to compare the concentration and residue of oxytetracycline in channel catfish blood following injection, force feeding and natural feeding with antibiotic.

This book was released on 1969 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coho salmon fed 100 milligrams oxytetracycline per kilogram/day beginning 3 days before exposure to pathogens were protected against infection by Chondrococcus columnaris and drug sensitive Aeromona salmonicida. Over 10,000 times as many A. salmonicida organisms were required to kill pretreated coho salmon as those not treated.
Download or read book Oxytetracycline Leaching from Medicated Fish Feeds written by James H. Fribourgh and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxytetracycline (Terramycin) is currently the most widely used antibiotic in fish therapy. A common method of administering oxytetracycline to fish is to mix the antibiotic with feed. For this method to be successful (1) the drug must be uniformly distributed throughout the feed; (2) the drug is present in such quantity that the therapeutic level is available in the quantity of food consumed; (3) the drug is reasonably stable in the finished feed; (4) the feed is palatable to the fish and must be consumed; (5) the feed composition does not affect the availability of the drug; and (6) the drug doesn't leach into the water before the fish consumes the feed. In addition to tissue residue levels, initial results suggested that leaching of antibiotic might deserve further investigation and this investigation was undertaken to determine if significant leaching occurred, and if so, the efforts of selected environmental factors on this phenomenon. This study determines the effects of pellet surface / volume ratio, water temperature, and hydrogen ion concentration of the medium on leaching.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FROM THE INTRODUCTION This three-volume series, Bioremediation: Principles and Practice, provides state of the art description of advances in pollution treatment and reduction using biological means; identify and address, at a fundamental level, broad scientific and technological areas that are unique to the subject or theme and that must be understood if advances are to be made; and provide a comprehensive overview of new developments at the regulatory, desk-top, bench-scale, pilot scale, and full-scale levels. The series covers all media-air, water, and soil/sediment-and blends the talents, knowledge, and know-how of academic, industrial, governmental, and international contributors. The series addresses the removal of both hazardous and nonhazardous contaminants from the liquid, solid, and gas phase using biological processes. This includes the biological treatment of wastes of municipal and industrial origin; bioremediation of leachates, soils, and sediments; and biofiltration for contaminated gases.
