Book An Analysis of the Oxygen Protection Problem at Flight Altitudes Between 40 000 and 50 000 Feet

Download or read book An Analysis of the Oxygen Protection Problem at Flight Altitudes Between 40 000 and 50 000 Feet written by W. V. BLOCKLEY and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of a six-month intensive study of the problems peculiar to civil aviation in the 40,000 to 50,000 foot flight range are reported, leading to a comprehensive set of recommendations for equipment design, testing practices, personnel selection and indoctrination, and overall research and development policy. In addition to reviewing much of the pertinent literature of the past twenty-five years, the report analyzes in detail the results of recently completed experiments dealing specifically with rapid decompression under conditions representative of the civil aviation potential emergency. From this analysis a system is derived for predicting the time of onset, depth, and duration of functional impairment in decompressions while breathing air or enriched mixtures. In addition, a criterion is proposed for pre-decompression breathing mixtures which will preclude post-decompression impairment. Included are numerous comparative tables and figures describing typical oxygen equipment, a bibliography of over 200 reports, abstracts of some key articles, and several reference charts and nomographs. Certain unpublished data on cerebral oxygenation are included in complete form. (Author).

Book Evaluation of the Scott Aviox Emergency Oxygen System During a Rapid Decompression to 25 000 Feet

Download or read book Evaluation of the Scott Aviox Emergency Oxygen System During a Rapid Decompression to 25 000 Feet written by A. G. Hynes and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new emergency supplemental oxygen system is the Scott Aviox Single Pak, which utilizes solid state oxygen generators composed of sodium chlorate for oxygen production. The sodium chlorate is degraded by an exothermic chemical reaction that liberates a continuous flow of oxygen. As this method of oxygen production was novel to the Canadian Forces, a series of evaluations was undertaken to determine the overall reliability and oxygen output of the system under static conditions. Results of these tests proved favorable; therefore, to fully evaluate this system's performance, it was subjected to the next stage which consisted of use by human subjects under hypobaric conditions. During this experiment five male subjects were individually exposed to hypobaric conditions. Each was subjected to a rapid decompression from 8,000 to 25,000 feet. Arterial oxygen saturation levels were also a monitored throughout the experiment to determine the degree of protection this system afforded against hypoxia. Experimental results and observations indicated that the subjects had very little difficulty in placing the system into use after the decompression. Recorded oxygen saturation levels show that this system provided more than the required degree of hypoxia protection at the experimental altitudes.

Download or read book Design and Development of an Airworthy Multipurpose 50 Psi Oxygen System for Transporting Decompression Sickness Patients written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Davis Hyperbaric Laboratory, Brooks AFB TX requested Aeromedical Research to design and develop a 50 psi oxygen delivery system that could be used to transport decompression sickness patients aboard C-21 Learjets. With the help of an independant manufacturer's air ambulance life support unit having the required oxygen capacity could an interface oxygen system be built. Aeromedical Research staff members within the Systems Research Branch, considers the unit acceptable for use in the aeromedical evacuation environment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Underwater Physiology is a collection of papers that deals with the physiologically limiting effects of undersea, high pressure exposure ranging from fundamental biological reactions, through integration of physiological stresses, and to limits actually experienced in deep diving. Papers discuss oxygen, the mechanisms of toxicity, and the effects of oxygen on cells and systems such as its pathological and physiological influences in the neurosensory ocular tissue. Other papers discuss the physical effects of pressure and gases on cellular function, protein structure, and the possibility of alleviating symptoms through the administration of drugs. Tests in mice show that various gases exhibit qualitative and semi-quantitative differences in the characteristics of sickness, reactions to hypoxia, and the time before the onset of symptoms. A computer, programmed for nonlinear gas transfer and other variables, running in real time can compute directly from the breathing mixture and provide a real time solution to decompression sickness under various conditions. A combined therapeutic approach, recompression and dextran (an effective lipemic clearing agent) should be capable of treating decompression sickness in humans. Other papers investigate the influence of inert gases and pressure on the central nervous system, as well as, situations in undersea and manned chamber operations. This collection can prove valuable for physiologists, biochemists, cellular biologists, and researchers involved in deep sea diving.

Download or read book The Problem with Pilots written by Timothy P. Schultz and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An illuminating look at how human vulnerability led to advances in aviation technology. As aircraft flew higher, faster, and farther in the early days of flight, pilots were exposed as vulnerable, inefficient, and dangerous. They asphyxiated or got the bends at high altitudes; they fainted during high-G maneuvers; they spiraled to the ground after encountering clouds or fog. Their capacity to commit fatal errors seemed boundless. The Problem with Pilots tells the story of how, in the years between the world wars, physicians and engineers sought new ways to address these difficulties and bridge the widening gap between human and machine performance. A former Air Force pilot, Timothy P. Schultz delves into archival sources to understand the evolution of the pilot–aircraft relationship. As aviation technology evolved and enthusiasts looked for ways to advance its military uses, pilots ceded hands-on control to sophisticated instrument-based control. By the early 1940s, pilots were sometimes evicted from aircraft in order to expand the potential of airpower—a phenomenon much more common in today's era of high-tech (and often unmanned) aircraft. Connecting historical developments to modern flight, this study provides an original view of how scientists and engineers brought together technological, medical, and human elements to transform the pilot's role. The Problem with Pilots does away with the illusion of pilot supremacy and yields new insights into our ever-changing relationship with intelligent machines.
