Book Oxidation of Intermetallics

Download or read book Oxidation of Intermetallics written by Hans Jürgen Grabke and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-07-11 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last ten years vast efforts were made in the research and development of intermetallic compounds to attain improved high temperature strength and low temperature ductility. These new structural materials are used in several high-temperature applications like engines and turbines. Oxidation and corrosion resistance are as important for the current applications of these materials as mechanical properties. This book gives a sound review of the present knowledge of the oxidation kinetics and mechanisms of intermetallics. Especially Ti-, Ni- and Fe-aluminides are treated in detail by experts from Europe, USA and Japan. The information provided will be of wealth for any engineer and scientist- materials scientist, physicist or chemist - involved in the development of new intermetallic materials and their applications.

Book High Temperature Corrosion of Intermetallics

Book excerpt: Intermetallic compounds can be simply defined as ordered alloy phases formed between two or more metallic elements. These materials have different crystal structures from those of the constituent metallic components and exhibit as long-range ordered superlattices. Their relatively low density, high melting point, high specific strength and due ductility make them the promising high temperature structural materials for aviation and aerospace applications. Among the big family of intermetallics, Fe-Al, Ni-Al and Ti-Al systems are attracting most of the attention. The objective of studies is to develop and utilize these intermetallic compounds as a type of important structural material whose overall properties is between nickel-based superalloys and advanced ceramics. However, a balance cannot always be achieved between mechanical and environmental properties. For example, iron aluminides have excellent resistance against oxidation and hot corrosion, however, their strength is relatively low. The higher specific strength and modulus than conventional Ni-based superalloys make Ti-Al intermetallic compounds of interest for aero-engine components, but the oxidation resistance of Ti-containing intermetallics is much lower than desirable; thus a key factor in increasing the maximum temperature in service is enhancing their oxidation and hot corrosion resistance while maintaining the excellent mechanical properties. This book is then intended to give an overview on the major efforts made over the last 20 years on high temperature oxidation and protection of intermetallic compounds including Fe-Al, Ni-Al and Ti-Al. In particular, the focus will be given to Ti-Al systems. After a general introduction on the structural and mechanical properties, the studies on the oxidation behaviours of these intermetallic compounds will be summarised based on the experimental observation reported in open literature. The emphasis will be put on the effects of alloying element, microstructure and coating/surface treatment. It should also be noted that only high temperature oxidation properties in air or oxygen are addressed; no discussion on hot corrosion, carburization, nitridation and sulfidation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermetallic compounds are usually brittle with high melting points. Their properties are often found among ceramic and metallic materials. In most cases, their hot corrosion resistance and simultaneously hardness are important. One of the main applications of intermetallic compounds is for superalloy turbine blades in which they show appropriate high-temperature-related properties. Book excerpt: High temperature corrosion is a phenomenon that occurs in components that operate at very high temperatures, such as gas turbines, jet engines and industrial plants. Engineers are constantly striving to understand and prevent this type of corrosion. This book examines the latest developments in the understanding of high temperature corrosion processes and protective oxide scales and coatings. Part one looks at high temperature corrosion. Chapters cover diffusion and solid state reactions, external and internal oxidation of alloys, metal dusting corrosion, tribological degradation, hot corrosion, and oxide scales on hot-rolled steel strips. Modern techniques for analysing high temperature oxidation and corrosion are also discussed. Part two discusses methods of protection using ceramics, composites, protective oxide scales and coatings. Chapters focus on layered ternary ceramics, alumina scales, Ti-Al intermetallic compounds, metal matrix composites, chemical vapour deposited silicon carbide, nanocrystalline coatings and thermal barrier coatings. Part three provides case studies illustrating some of the challenges of high temperature corrosion to industry and how they can be overcome. Case studies include the petrochemical industry, modern incinerators and oxidation processing of electronic materials. This book is a valuable reference tool for engineers who develop heat resistant materials, mechanical engineers who design and maintain high temperature equipment and plant, and research scientists and students who study high temperature corrosion and protection of materials. Book Physical Metallurgy and processing of Intermetallic Compounds

Download or read book Physical Metallurgy and processing of Intermetallic Compounds written by N.S. Stoloff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attractive physical and mechanical properties of ordered intermetallic alloys have been recognized since early in this century. However, periodic attempts to develop intermetallics for structural applications were unsuc cessful, due in major part to the twin handicaps of inadequate low-temper ature ductility or toughness, together with poor elevated-temperature creep strength. The discovery, in 1979, by Aoki and Izumi in Japan that small additions of boron caused a dramatic improvement in the ductility of Ni3Al was a major factor in launching a new wave of fundamental and applied research on intermetallics. Another important factor was the issuance in 1984 of a National Materials Advisory Board reported entitled "Structural Uses for Ductile Ordered Alloys," which identified numerous potential defense-related applications and proposed the launching of a coordinated development program to gather engineering property and processing data. A substantial research effort on titanium aluminides was already underway at the Air Force Materials Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and, with Air Force support, at several industrial and university laboratories. Smaller programs also were under way at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, under Department of Energy sponsorship. These research efforts were soon augmented in the United States by funding from Department of Defense agencies such as Office of Naval Research and Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and by the National Science Foundation.

Book The Role of Active Elements in the Oxidation Behaviour of High Temperature Metals and Alloys

Download or read book The Role of Active Elements in the Oxidation Behaviour of High Temperature Metals and Alloys written by E. Lang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metals and alloys rely for their application at high temperature on the formation and retention of oxide scales, which act as a barrier between the metallic substrate and the reactive species in the environment such as 0, S, N, C, Cl, etc. This protection concept requires that the oxide grows slowly, develops a dense, uniform layer, is well adherent, has sufficient ductility to accom modate plastic deformation of the substrate and is resistant to thermal cycling. For many years it has been known that small concentrations of certain "active elements" such as Y and the rare earths, as well as carbon and sulphur, can exercise a significant influence upon the oxidation! corrosion behaviour of high temperature metals and alloys. An increasing number of experimental studies on this topic have been published recently. However no generally accepted understanding with regard to the detailed mechanisms and the way in which alloy composition and structure, temperature and environmental conditions, etc., are interacting has yet been achieved, although many - often controversial - theories and ideas have been presented. It therefore seemed to be an appropriate time to bring together a group of experts to review and evaluate the current state-of-the-art and to discuss various aspects of this important topic.
