Book excerpt: In the early 1800s, a wooded hilltop in southwestern Ohio became the site for Miami University and the town of Oxford. Miami was named for the area's Native American inhabitants and Oxford for the university town in England. By mid-century, Oxford was a well-established academic community featuring a university plus a men's theological seminary and three educational institutions for women. Oxford depicts the town's historic ties to higher education and its notable people, including U.S. President Benjamin Harrison and his wife Caroline Scott, author William Holmes McGuffey, and apiarist Lorenzo Langstroth. Today's Oxford continues to offer superior educational opportunities, athletic events, and cultural activities.

Download or read book Ohio written by Andrew Robert Lee Cayton and published by Ohio State University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the state of Ohio prepares to celebrate its bicentennial in 2003, Andrew R. L. Cayton offers an account of ways in which diverse citizens have woven its history. Ohio: The History of a People, centers around the many stories Ohioans have told about life in their state. The founders of Ohio in 1803 believed that its success would depend on the development of a public culture that emphasized what its citizens had in common with each other. But for two centuries the remarkably diverse inhabitants of Ohio have repeatedly asserted their own ideas about how they and their children should lead their lives. The state's public culture has consisted of many voices, sometimes in conflict with each other. Using memoirs, diaries, letters, novels, and paintings, Cayton writes Ohio's history as a collective biography of its citizens. Ohio, he argues, lies at the intersection of the stories of James Rhodes and Toni Morrison, Charles Ruthenberg and Lucy Webb Hayes, Carl Stokes and Alice Cary, Sherwood Anderson and Pete Rose. It lies in the tales of German Jews in Cincinnati, Italian and Polish immigrants in Cleveland, Southern blacks and white Appalachians in Youngstown. Ohio is the mingled voices of farm families, steelworkers, ministers, writers, schoolteachers, reformers, and football coaches. Ohio, in short, is whatever its citizens have imagined it to be.
Download or read book Asian Slaves in Colonial Mexico written by Tatiana Seijas and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, countless slaves from culturally diverse communities in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia journeyed to Mexico on the ships of the Manila Galleon. Upon arrival in Mexico, they were grouped together and categorized as chinos. Their experience illustrates the interconnectedness of Spain's colonies and the reach of the crown, which brought people together from Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe in a historically unprecedented way. In time, chinos in Mexico came to be treated under the law as Indians, becoming indigenous vassals of the Spanish crown after 1672. The implications of this legal change were enormous: as Indians, rather than chinos, they could no longer be held as slaves. Tatiana Seijas tracks chinos' complex journey from the slave market in Manila to the streets of Mexico City, and from bondage to liberty. In doing so, she challenges commonly held assumptions about the uniformity of the slave experience in the Americas.

Download or read book American Chinese Restaurants written by Jenny Banh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With case studies from the USA, Canada, Chile, and other countries in Latin America, American Chinese Restaurants examines the lived experiences of what it is like to work in a Chinese restaurant. The book provides ethnographic insights on small family businesses, struggling immigrant parents, and kids working, living, and growing up in an American Chinese restaurant. This is the first book based on personal histories to document and analyze the American Chinese restaurant world. New narratives by various international and American contributors have presented Chinese restaurants as dynamic agencies that raise questions on identity, ethnicity, transnationalism, industrialization, (post)modernity, assimilation, public and civic spheres, and socioeconomic differences. American Chinese Restaurants will be of interest to general readers, scholars, and college students from undergraduate to graduate level, who wish to know Chinese restaurant life and understand the relationship between food and society.
