Inspired by the optimism of Independence, the project was designed in close consultation with the Ju|hoansi community in the early 1990s. Drawing upon their traditional knowledge transmission strategies, and initiated in a supportive political environment, the project exemplified best practice. During the following two decades, the Village Schools have transitioned from a donor-supported project to government schools, and have received much attention and support from donors, civil society organisations, researchers, and others.However, the students still do not seem to succeed in the mainstream schools. Why is this? Based on long-term field-work in the region, including interviews with Nyae Nyae residents over several years and work with involved organisations, the book addresses this question. Contextualising the Village Schools within post-Independence Namibia, southern African history and the global indigenous rights movement, it examines the enormous paradoxes that schooling presents for the Nyae Nyae community. Owners of Learning is the English translation of the Ju|hoansi word for teacher and it serves to highlight a fundamental question to whom does education belong?

Book excerpt: This study analyzes the term student ownership of learning, aiming for fruitful application beyond the perpetuating of slogans. The analysis identifies four specific misuses of ownership resulting from the sloganeering of this term: a lack of definition, unconscious shifts among meanings, inconsistent specification of causal relationships, and the uncritical grouping of undefined slogans. Then it distinguishes among three meanings of ownership as it is used in the education literature: ownership as right and responsibility, ownership as buy-in, and ownership as identifying with. Student ownership of learning is then discussed as an attitudinal reorientation towards a personal learning quest, which emerges after some catalyzing experience, or in the awakening of a personal calling. It is distinguished from the love of learning and from the other educational uses of ownership and, lastly, considered as a defined standard of success for schools.

We should provide them the ground rules, the boundaries and let them find the knowledge in their own way in order for them to enjoy the learning process itself and be rewarded with the knowledge that will stay with them and the end goal should not be the grade points or scores. Learning should be transformed from something that they "have to do" to something they "want to do." When they make this transformation, grade points and scores will automatically get better. The TRAMEWA Learning Framework provides those ground rules, methods, clues to enable them to eventually find the treasure of knowledge while having fun during the quest. It is the structure that forms the basis of the active learning process. It is a systematic learning methodology that will help the students learn "how to learn." Active learning is the best pathway to achieve sustained learning.
