Book Overwintering of Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis in Sevenmile Creek Lake Superior Michigan USA

Download or read book Overwintering of Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis in Sevenmile Creek Lake Superior Michigan USA written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter salmonid studies are becoming more common due to the importance of this time period on survivorship and the growing concern of climate change. Fish condition, fish movement, aquatic invertebrate drift, and available habitat were assessed in Sevenmile Creek, located in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, during the winter months to determine the effects on brook trout. Mean fish condition was shown to decrease during winters for both 100+ mm BKT (12.7--17.6%) and sub-100 mm BKT (7.9--10.6%). Aquatic invertebrate drift decreased during winter, relative to summer, in both abundance (37.2-- 48.0%) and richness (25.8--28.8%). Riffles, runs and pools were assessed to determine habitat suitability for brook trout. During the summer months, water velocity and depth remained generally stable; however, during winter months, as ice formed, water depth fluctuated as much as 49.5% in pools and 16.5% in runs, and velocity varied up to 23.0% in runs, suggesting a decrease in available suitable habitat for brook trout in winter. Also, radio-telemetry data suggested post-spawn movements of brook trout that were followed by a period of relatively little movement through mid-winter. The results show that winter is a challenging period for brook trout in this Upper Peninsula stream and suggests that limitations in habitat availability may play a role in overwintering success.

Book Evaluation and Application of Population Size Estimators to Assess Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis Response to a Non native Salmonid Removal in a Small Michigan Coldwater Stream

Download or read book Evaluation and Application of Population Size Estimators to Assess Brook Trout Salvelinus Fontinalis Response to a Non native Salmonid Removal in a Small Michigan Coldwater Stream written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Non-native salmonids have been stocked into the Great Lakes since the 1870s and now naturalized populations use tributary environments to reproduce and for their juvenile life stage. Historically, brook trout were the only salmonid to inhabit the tributary environment and numerous studies suggest that exotic salmonids negatively affect brook trout by competing for limited resources. Other studies have been successful at removing non-native salmonids and the native populations increased. During this project 5,320 exotic salmonids were removed from a tributary of Lake Superior from 2008 to 2010 significantly reducing their density and young-of-year brook trout density increased by 260% the year after the study suggesting interspecific competition may be occurring. In order to monitor the salmonid populations closely, three techniques were used to assess population size of this small brook trout population. Mark-recapture estimates had large confidence intervals, so changes in population size could not be detected. Depletion estimates were hampered by sample size constraints and likely underestimated the population size. Relative abundance seemed to be the least likely to be biased because sampling was done on a frequent basis, which helped identify apparent changes in capture probability making it the best option to monitor changes in population size."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants - Revised Designation of Critical Habitat for Bull Trout in the Coterminous United States (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition) The Law Library presents the complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants - Revised Designation of Critical Habitat for Bull Trout in the Coterminous United States (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition). Updated as of May 29, 2018 We, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, are revising critical habitat for the bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (Act). We are designating a total of 31,750.8 km (19,729.0 mi) of streams (which includes 1,213.2 km (754.0 mi) of marine shoreline) and are designating a total of 197,589.2 ha (488,251.7 ac) of reservoirs and lakes. The areas designated as critical habitat are located in the States of Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Idaho, and Montana. This book contains: - The complete text of the Endangered and Threatened Wildlife and Plants - Revised Designation of Critical Habitat for Bull Trout in the Coterminous United States (US Fish and Wildlife Service Regulation) (FWS) (2018 Edition) - A table of contents with the page number of each section

Book Battle Against Extinction

Download or read book Battle Against Extinction written by W. L. Minckley and published by . This book was released on 1991-12 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1962 the Green River was poisoned and its native fishes killed so that the new Flaming Gorge Reservoir could be stocked with non-native game fishes for sportsmen. This incident was representative of water management in the West, where dams and other projects have been built to serve human needs without consideration for the effects of water diversion or depletion on the ecosystem. Indeed, it took a Supreme Court decision in 1976 to save Devils Hole pupfish from habitat destruction at the hands of developers. Nearly a third of the native fish fauna of North America lives in the arid West; this book traces their decline toward extinction as a result of human interference and the threat to their genetic diversity posed by decreases in their populations. What can be done to slow or end this tragedy? As the most comprehensive treatment ever attempted on the subject, Battle Against Extinction shows how conservation efforts have been or can be used to reverse these trends. In covering fishes in arid lands west of the Mississippi Valley, the contributors provide a species-by-species appraisal of their status and potential for recovery, bringing together in one volume nearly all of the scattered literature on western fishes to produce a monumental work in conservation biology. They also ponder ethical considerations related to the issue, ask why conservation efforts have not proceeded at a proper pace, and suggest how native fish protection relates to other aspects of biodiversity planetwide. Their insights will allow scientific and public agencies to evaluate future management of these animal populations and will offer additional guidance for those active in water rights and conservation biology. First published in 1991, Battle Against Extinction is now back in print and available as an open-access e-book thanks to the Desert Fishes Council.
