Book Caribbean Political Economy at the Crossroads

Download or read book Caribbean Political Economy at the Crossroads written by D. Marshall and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-09-23 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a variety of crisis symptoms confronting the Commonwealth Caribbean as the 21st century dawns. Global changes are quickly rendering the region's traditional economic platform obsolete. This book suggests however that the expanding NAFTA or the hemispheric turn towards bloc formation can offer a way out for the Caribbean. Politics must be brought back into the regionalisation process, for each island government is witnessing the narrowing of the range of its state power by powerful TNCs, international financial institutions, Washington interests, and corporate-backed WTO commissions.

Book Cooperation in the Greater Caribbean

Download or read book Cooperation in the Greater Caribbean written by Norman Girvan and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past 50 years there has been a subtle shift in the proclaimed identity of the Caribbean. The development of a pan-Caribbean consciousness transcending language and colonial ties has become even more pronounced in the post-independence era. The famed 1992 report of the West India Commission, A Time for Action, widely regarded as the turning point in contemporary Caribbean development, recommended a deepening of CARICOM and a simultaneous widening of functional cooperation. The result was the creation of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) with potential membership of all the countries of the Caribbean Basin. In this volume, Norman Girvan examines the issues and obstacles, challenges and opportunities presented by this functional cooperation and presented the ACS as a viable vehicle to help CARICOM nations meet the challenges of the new globalized environment. Book Caribbean Imperatives

Download or read book Caribbean Imperatives written by Kenneth O. Hall and published by Ian Randle Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "With the launch of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy and the Caribbean Court of Justice, the Caribbean Community has taken major steps to promote closer and more intensive forms of economic cooperation among its constituent members. This effort requires the adoption of innovative approaches to regional governance and creative regional development strategies aimed at maximizing the exercise of sovereignty within the Community and also optimizing the development possibilities of the region. The 30th anniversary of the establishment of the Caribbean Community in 2003 marked an important milestone in the historical evolution of regional integration in the Caribbean. Caribbean Imperatives focuses on several important topics relevant to the future of the community by addressing issues such as the conception of the Caribbean Community; integration theory; the exercise of sovereignty; the Single Market and Economy; production integration; the external relations of the community; and the importance of multilateralism for the viability of small states in the international system. The analysis contained in the volume is extremely relevant to policy makers in the region in managing the transition to more intensive forms of regional integration aimed at improving the well-being of the people of the Caribbean. Book excerpt: How do recent trends toward globalization affect the Caribbean, a region whose suppliers, production, markets, and politics have been globalized for centuries? What is the status of neoliberal development policy in the Caribbean, where the rewards for belt tightening and economic opening have been slow in coming? How have Caribbean policymakers and citizens responded to and resisted the pressures to conform to the new rules of the global economy? By examining these questions through the lens of political economy, this volume explores the interaction among development, trade, foreign policy, the environment, tourism, gender relations, and migration. With its global implications, this book will be invaluable for students and scholars from all disciplines who are concerned with the impact of development and globalization.

Book Last Resorts

Download or read book Last Resorts written by Polly Pattullo and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2005-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean has the fortune—and the misfortune̬to be everyone's idea of a tropical paradise. Its sun, sand and scenery attract millions of visitors each year and make it a profitable destination for the world's fastest growing industry. Tourism is increasingly touted as its only hope of creating jobs and wealth—literally, the island's last resort. Last Resorts examines the real impact of tourism on the people and landscape of the Caribbean. It explores the structure of ownership of the industry and shows that the benefits it brings to the region do not live up to its claims. New developments in ecotourism, sex tourism, and the burgeoning cruise industry are not changing this pattern of short-term exploitation of the region's resources. The book shows how Caribbean societies are corrupted by tourism and its culture turned into floorshow parody. This new edition has been extensively revised and updated. It gives voice to people inside the tourism industry, its critics, and tourists themselves, and offers vital insights into a phenomenon that is central to the globalized world of today.

Book Caribbean Integration Law

    Book Details:
  • Author : David S. Berry
  • Publisher : OUP Oxford
  • Release : 2014-02-27
  • ISBN : 0191649155
  • Pages : 512 pages

Download or read book Caribbean Integration Law written by David S. Berry and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-02-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caribbean Integration Law offers a comprehensive legal analysis of the current treaties and rules governing the two main regional organisations in the Caribbean, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). Both organisations are operating under new treaties, the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas and the Revised Treaty of Basseterre, respectively, which created the CARICOM Single Market and Economy, and the OECS Economic Union. The single market and economic union were built upon principles of free movement of goods, labour, and capital, and a common external tariff. This book reviews the foundations of Caribbean regional integration, the institutional frameworks of the two regional organisations, and fleshes out the scope and context of the legal systems created by the treaties. It also reviews the dispute settlement mechanisms under both treaties, including the increasingly active role of the Caribbean Court of Justice, which allows persons to enforce their treaty rights directly before the Court. The book offers selective comparisons to the current rules governing the European Union, and integrates crucial insights from the field of public international law, including the law of treaties and international institutional law.
