Book excerpt: Rare decays provide a complementary window to direct collider searches as probes of physics beyond the Standard Model. We present an overview of the New Physics sensitivity provided by existing and future measurements of rare leptonic and semileptonic K decays within the context of several classes of models.

Book excerpt: In the rush to explore the B system, one should not ignore the potential of rare K decays. The charged and neutral FCNC K →??{bar {mu}} decays are theoretically very clean, on a par with B →?K{sub S}, which measures?, and much less problematic than B →?? and B{sub s} → KK− or B{sub s} → K*+K*− which have been proposed to measure? and? respectively. B(K+ →?+?{bar?}), which in the Standard Model yields information on.

Book Rare K Decays and Limits on New Forces

Book excerpt: We reconsider the possible detection of hyperphotons (..gamma../sub Y/) in the decay mode, K/sub L/ ..-->.. ..pi ... pi../sup /minus//..gamma../sub Y/. We find it to have certain advantages over K ..-->.. ..pi..+..gamma../sub Y/ in setting limits on new forces coupling to hypercharge. The prospects for studying this decay mode in the near future are discussed. 10 refs.

Book Rare Decays Experimental Summary and Prospects

Download or read book Rare Decays Experimental Summary and Prospects written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I review the status and future prospects of searches for forbidden and highly kaon suppressed decays. This workshop comes as we are poised at the threshold of a new generation of rare K decay experiments. There are new experiments running or about to run at KEK, BNL, FNAL, and CERN. In another year or so these will be joined by the KLOE experiment at DA[Phi]NE. The good news is that it's a very exciting time. The bad news, at least for a reviewer, is that there aren't too many new results. Thus I'll be giving a little more attention than usual to what the experimenters expect to do. My discussion of rare K decays covers processes that are forbidden in the Standard Model, those that highly suppressed and to a smaller extent, those that are merely discouraged.

Book excerpt: In recent years the study of the rare decays of kaons has had three primary motivations. The first is the search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). Virtually all attempts to redress the theoretical shortcomings of the Standard Model (SM) predict some degree of lepton flavor violation (LFV). Decays such as K{sub L} → [mu]{sup {+-}}e{sup {-+}} have very good experimental signatures and can consequently be pursued to remarkable sensitivities. These sensitivities correspond to extremely high energy scales in models where the only subpression is that of the mass of the exchanged field. There are also theories that predict new particles created in kaon decay or the violation of symmetries other than lepton flavor. The second is the potential of decays that are allowed but that are extremely suppressed in the SM. In several of these, the leading component is a G.I.M.-suppressed [1] one-loop process that is quite sensitive to fundamental SM parameters such as V{sub td}. These decays are also potentially very sensitive to BSM physics. Finally there are a number of long-distance-dominated decays which can test theoretical techniques such as chiral Lagrangians that purport to explain the low-energy behavior of QCD. Knowledge of some of these decays is also needed to extract more fundamental information from certain of the one-loop processes. This field is quite active as indicated by Table 1 that lists the decays for which results have been forthcoming in the last couple of years as well as those that are under analysis. Thus in a short review such as this, one must be quite selective. Recent results on rare kaon decays are reviewed and prospects for future experiments are discussed.

Book Experimental Studies of Rare K Decays

Download or read book Experimental Studies of Rare K Decays written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiment E865 at the BNL AGS is a search for the lepton number violating decay K → ?+?+e− with an expected sensitivity of 3 × 10−12. The experimental apparatus involves a magnetic spectrometer with two Cerenkov counters, a calorimeter and a muon detector for particle identification. In addition, other rare K+ decays are studied. The experiment has been collecting data since 1995, and preliminary results are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ultimate question of elementary particle physics is: What is the fundamental Lagrangian of nature surrounding us? The Lagrangian of the SM is very successful in describing nature at the currently available energy range. The discovery of the Higgs boson completed the particle spectrum of the SM and it is another proof of how well the SM works. Nevertheless the SM cannot be the end of the story and it is for sure not the fundamental Lagrangian of nature. The Lagrangian of the SM looses its validity at the latest at the Planck scale where gravitational effects become noticeable. Most physicists think of the SM as an effective theory that has to be replaced by a more fundamental theory above the TeV scale. What the word effective really means will hopefully be clear at later stages of our book. For the time being we will list some problems and open questions of the SM"--
