The working hypothesis was that the pattern of pesticide detections would be influenced by the intensity of pesticide use in the drainage basins and by the median annual runoff. Using data from 1995 and 1996, the investigators tested the hypothesis by examining pesticide detections in streams and lakes draining land where pesticide use differs, and by comparing patterns of detections in lakes located in different runoff zones.
