Book excerpt: From among the areas of excimer laser development at Los Alamos two are selected for further discussion: ultra-high brightness excimer laser systems and discharge-pumped XeF(C.-->.A) lasers operating in the blue-green portion of the spectrum. Two different high brightness systems are described. One is based on small-aperture KrF amplifiers, while the other is based on a large-aperture XeCl amplifier. The XeF(C.-->.A) laser is tunable from 435 to 525 nm, and may one day become a viable alternative to pulsed dye lasers for many applications. 14 refs., 4 figs.

Recently we have completed rigorous measurements of the saturation parameter for ultra-short pulses. In the laser fusion program, implementation of the large KrF laser fusion amplifiers have been accompanied by numerous studies of the laser physics and kinetics of large e-beam pumped devices.

We will describe research in both discharge pumped lasers and E-beam pumped lasers and we will review methods of wavelength conversion in these devices. Finally we will discuss the current understanding of laser induced damage to optical components in the uv.

This talk will present a review of the physics that will be investigated with one such laser system, will describe the laser used, will describe the laser diagnostics, and will describe the physics diagnostics. The talk will emphasize the areas of research that will help the diagnostics of different aspects of these bright sources, and their interactions, especially the diagnostics of hot small volumes in picosecond time scales. 15 refs., 7 figs.
