Download or read book Behind the Scenes written by Christina Hardyment and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christina Hardyment conducted a fascinating quest into the history of housekeeping through the well-preserved properties of Britain's National Trust, among them Petworth, Uppark, Shugborough, and Lanhydrock. To reconstruct the ingenious methods used by earlier generations to make a house a home and to keep themselves warm and well-fed, she squirmed through drains, poked around sculleries and cellars, and clambered into icehouses and up chimneys. The result of her explorations is an informative, amusing text that recounts not only the history of the kitchen, the bathroom, and the laundry, but also investigates bakehouses and breweries, dairies and dovecotes, the lamp room and the larder. Accompanying Hardyment's descriptions of what she found in great mansions, humble cottages, medieval castles and Victorian townhouses are archival documents and accounts and a wealth of color photographs, many taken especially for this book.
Download or read book After Adorno written by Tia DeNora and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theodor W. Adorno placed music at the centre of his critique of modernity and broached some of the most important questions about the role of music in contemporary society. One of his central arguments was that music, through the manner of its composition, affected consciousness and was a means of social management and control. His work was primarily theoretical however, and because these issues were never explored empirically his work has become sidelined in current music sociology. This book argues that music sociology can be greatly enriched by a return to Adorno's concerns, in particular his focus on music as a dynamic medium of social life. Intended as a guide to 'how to do music sociology' this book deals with critical topics too often sidelined such as aesthetic ordering, cognition, the emotions and music as a management device and reworks Adorno's focus through a series of grounded examples.

Download or read book The Country House written by Jon Stobart and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the post-Downton Abbey era, the country house has been the object of renewed interest, both scholarly and popular. The chapters in this book examine the country house in terms of its material culture, its presentation to the public, and its function as both a quotidian and a historic space, investigating in detail the consumption practices of the elite. By looking at the country house as lived space, the authors pose questions about the accumulation and arrangement of objects, the way in which rooms were used and experienced by both owners and visitors, and how this sense of "living history" can be presented meaningfully to the public.
