Book excerpt: This National Fire Academy (NFA) TD-1 (Training Document One) training audience survey report results from an exhaustive two-year study to identify fire service and directly related allied professional audiences for which the NFA has a training and/or educational responsibility. For the purposes of this report, the audiences are categorized as career, volunteer, and allied professionals to reflect the unique fire protection responsibilities, training requirements, and number of the various groups. This report, which may be likened to an "audit" of who and how many persons may benefit from training by the Academy, is a component of the FEMA Five-Year Curriculum Management Plan, in which "strategies" are identified and constantly reviewed so as to be current and appropriate to each audience.

The recommendations in this research parallel those make by NIOSH which include a comprehensive hearing conservation program, and modifications to apparatus to lower peak SPL. However, this research goes one step further recommending fire manager interaction through various fire department channels of communication, locally and nationwide, advocating all managers take a more serious look at this problem and not to just give it lip service but to take steps to reduce exposure to firefighters.
