Book Law Enforcement Officers Understanding of Domestic Violence Among Their Colleagues

Download or read book Law Enforcement Officers Understanding of Domestic Violence Among Their Colleagues written by Marie C. Salimbeni and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2011-04 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the perceptions of officers with colleagues who perpetrate acts of domestic violence. This was a qualitative research design from a phenomenological perspective. The data was gathered by the use of face-to-face interviews using open-ended questions. The data was analyzed by the use of bracketing, horizonalization, clusters of meanings, textural and structural descriptions, and the invariant structure of the phenomena described by the study participants. Upon completion of the 30 interviews, the audio tapes were all transcribed, and loaded in to Atlas Ti for the purpose of coding the data for the major themes. A constant comparison method was used to analyze the data to help identify the similarities and differences between the study participants' perceptions with the phenomena. The five qualitative questions each depict a different area of experience with the phenomenon, to create a holistic picture of the perceptions of the thirty participants. The findings suggest that for some officers, the inability to separate their police role from their civilian role may be a factor in the perpetration of domestic violence by law enforcement officers. The findings also suggest that social workers may be able to play an important role in the remediation of the problem of domestic violence for those within and outside police social work settings.

Book Policing Domestic Violence

Download or read book Policing Domestic Violence written by Michele-Lynne Muni and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why and how do law enforcement agencies develop and change strategies to deal with the silent epidemic of domestic violence? Although academics discuss organizational change in the community policing literature, police department innovation needs further exploration. Outside community policing literature, there is a dearth of research that analyzes the process of changing law enforcement strategies, policies and procedures. Learning how police departments change policies to deal with victimization may offer other agencies valuable information relevant to implementing policies and overcoming obstacles. In 21st century policing, departments face many unprecedented challenges, like gang violence and terrorism. Sometimes departments prioritize preventing crimes, like street violence, guns, and drugs because these crimes are visible and immediately pressing. This category of crime takes priority over developing policies and strategies that prevent victimization that occurs outside of the public eye. The issue is that crime that occurs indoors, like domestic violence, can reach the public eye. Police officers suggest that studies in domestic violence are practical because they encounter domestic violence calls frequently and new information is useful. This study worked within a case study design and an organizational change theoretical framework revealing the path taken by the Trenton, New Jersey Police Department (TPD) to change domestic violence strategies and carry out these policies. Four questions were explored: 1) Which external or internal factors have an independent influence on changing domestic violence policies; 2) How are police department dynamics involved in creating a process for changing policies and ensuring compliance with policies; 3) What is the perceived utility of domestic violence strategies in assisting victims of domestic violence; and 4) What organizational factors are essential in facilitating policy implementation? This study provides insight into how organizations make decisions to change and secondly how they implement change. Consistent with organizational literature, this research suggests that implementation of new domestic violence policies is contingent upon need. In general, this study suggested that external factors, domestic violence homicides, provided impetus for changing domestic violence strategies. Secondly, a change agent, dedicated supervisors, detectives, and interagency collaboration are important during implementation stages. Participants also suggested that victim support is increased through interagency collaborations and increased compliance/accountability. Finally, participants suggested that agencies implementing a domestic violence unit focus attention on a change agent; training and educating officers/public; and compliance and accountability. Furthermore, departments should scan data and analyze their current policies to highlight problems and ensure compliance/accountability. Several participants also referenced the need for adequate manpower. An unanticipated finding was the role of compulsion. Organizational change literature consistently points to the role of resistance in impeding change within organizations. At the Trenton Police Department, officers did not resist, instead they felt compelled to change. Most participants understood the reasons for changing domestic violence strategies. Several participants pointed to the increase in domestic violence homicides over a short period of time. In summary, from the observations of participants, the strengths of the new strategies included victim support, increased compliance/accountability, and improved collaborations.

Book Training Police as Specialists in Family Crisis Intervention

Download or read book Training Police as Specialists in Family Crisis Intervention written by City University of New York. City College. Psychological Center and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This training was intended to demonstrate innovative methods of crime prevention and preventive mental health. Processing family disturbances constitutes a major aspect of police work. Traditional police approaches to the problem do not reflect the realities of this police experience. There is evidence that a significant proportion of injuries and fatalities suffered by police occur in the highly volatile family conflict situation. The present project attempted to modify family assaults and family homicides and to reduce personal danger to police officers in such situations. The project attempted the development of a new preventive mental health strategy. Assuming that family conflict may be an early sign of emotional disorder in one or all of the participants, the project attempted to utilize policemen as front-line casefinders in keeping with theories of primary prevention. It was proposed that selected policemen could be provided with interpersonal skills necessary to effect constructive outcomes in deteriorating situations which require police intervention. Rejection of an exclusively specialized role for the police officers involved was a major emphasis. The program avoided the conversion of policemen into social workers or psychotherapists. The officers were expected to perform all generalized police patrol functions but were the individuals dispatched on all family disputes in a given geographical area. In addition to continuous group experience, each family specialist was assigned an individual consultant for at least one hour weekly consultation. The individual consultants were advanced clinical psychology students who acquired in this way an unusual community consultation experience. The reciprocal effect of these encounters on the students and upon the policemen is self-evident.

Book Targeting Domestic Abuse with Police Data

Download or read book Targeting Domestic Abuse with Police Data written by Matthew P. Bland and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the potential of domestic abuse data to assess the level of harm caused to victims and the amount of resources required to respond to it. Policing domestic abuse has become a major activity for the police service in England and Wales. Part of the police strategy is to gather hundreds of thousands of detailed records about victims and suspects – the single largest set of domestic abuse records available, but one that to date has largely unexplored by researchers. In this volume, Matthew Bland and Barak Ariel analyse three substantial datasets taken from police forces across the country and ask: · Can police data be used to derive meaningful insight? · How should we use these data to measure harm? · Just how much domestic abuse involves a repeat victim? · Does abuse get more serious over time? · Can serious domestic abuse be predicted before it occurs? This volume illustrates the scale of the challenge the police and other agencies face with reducing domestic abuse. A small proportion of individuals generate a majority of harm; this book argues that police records offer opportunities to identify these individuals before the harm occurs. Demonstrating that statistical techniques can be used to profile domestic abuse to target harm reduction strategies more precisely and even identify a sizable proportion of serious cases before they occur, this volume will be of interest to law enforcement officials, policing researchers, and policy makers interested in reducing the phenomenon of domestic abuse.
