Book International Development Assistance

Download or read book International Development Assistance written by Olav Stokke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive search for the basic political drivers of international development cooperation, based on the policy and performance of the OECD countries from the early 1960s to the present. The author focuses on the stated and implemented policies of the four so-called frontrunners and the Western hegemon, scrutinizing the changing trends in the justifications, objectives and guidelines set for the policy and their evolving performance vis-à-vis the international ODA target. Through extensive research, the work examines predominant world-views, societal value systems and foreign policy traditions, in order to find the policy drivers that vary nation to nation and how development assistance has evolved globally.

Book Adventures in Aidland

Download or read book Adventures in Aidland written by David Mosse and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2011-04-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthropological interest in new subjects of research and contemporary knowledge practices has turned ethnographic attention to a wide ranging variety of professional fields. Among these the encounter with international development has perhaps been longer and more intimate than any of the others. Anthropologists have drawn critical attention to the interfaces and social effects of development's discursive regimes but, oddly enough, have paid scant attention to knowledge producers themselves, despite anthropologists being among them. This is the focus of this volume. It concerns the construction and transmission of knowledge about global poverty and its reduction but is equally interested in the social life of development professionals, in the capacity of ideas to mediate relationships, in networks of experts and communities of aid workers, and in the dilemmas of maintaining professional identities. Going well beyond obsolete debates about 'pure' and 'applied' anthropology, the book examines the transformations that occur as social scientific concepts and practices cross and re-cross the boundary between anthropological and policy making knowledge.

Book Foreign Aid for Development

Download or read book Foreign Aid for Development written by George Mavrotas and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign aid is one of the few topics in the development discourse with such an uninterrupted, yet volatile history in terms of interest and attention from academics, policymakers, and practitioners alike. Does aid work in promoting growth and reducing poverty in the developing world? Will a new 'big push' approach accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals or will another opportunity be missed? Can the lessons of almost half a century of aid giving be learnt? These are truly important questions in view of the emerging new landscape in foreign aid and recent developments related to the global financial crisis, which are expected to have far reaching implications for both donors and recipients engaged in this area. Against this shifting aid landscape, there is a pressing need to evaluate progress to date and shed new light on emerging issues and agendas. This volume brings together leading aid experts to review the progress achieved so far, identify the challenges ahead, and discuss the emerging policy agenda in foreign aid. A central conclusion of this important and timely volume is that, since development aid remains crucial for many developing countries, a huge effort is needed from both donors and aid recipients to overcome the inefficiencies and make aid work better for poor people. After all, as global citizens, we have a moral obligation to do the best we can to lift people out of poverty in the developing world. The findings of this book will be of considerable interest to professionals and policymakers engaged in policy reforms in foreign aid, and provide an essential one-stop reference for students of development, international finance, and economics.

Book Department for International Development

Download or read book Department for International Development written by Great Britain. National Audit Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2008 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of the poorest countries in the world are affected by insecurity and violence. Insecurity has human and economic impacts, both for affected countries and their neighbours. Many insecure countries also receive lower levels of aid per capita than stable countries. These are good reasons to provide assistance to insecure countries, but there are also difficulties and risks. This report examines how the Department for International Development (DFID) works in insecure environments, ranging from some of the world's most insecure countries where armed conflict is still present and stabilisation is required, to less insecure contexts where donors may have more scope to engage in long term development projects. It examines what DFID is achieving and how it designs and manages its programmes, including dealing with risks to its staff. Insecurity is defined by reference to the incidence of political violence and the level of threat to aid workers. The NAO's work included four country case studies, literature and documentation review, data analysis and surveys. Their findings covered DFID's increasing interest in insecure environments, on what its expenditure has achieved in insecure environments, the design and management of country programmes, managing staff resources and costs and value for money. There are seven recommendations.

Book Reframing International Development

Download or read book Reframing International Development written by Nelson W. Keith and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 1997-09-04 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attempts to theorize contemporary globalization rarely stray beyond variations on old themes of superordination versus subordination. Yet there are many new definers of our present global reality - depletion of strategic resources, degradation of our environment, counter-offensives against modern patterns of thought and action - which suggest that a new framework of global relations is needed. Nelson Keith challenges the presumptions upon which Western notions of the world have rested, and sounds a call to forge a world order more sensitive to all of its representative voices.

Book Philanthropic Foundations in International Development

Download or read book Philanthropic Foundations in International Development written by Patrick Kilby and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-03 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the influence of philanthropic foundations in global development, and on how the global south has engaged with them. The idea of corporate philanthropy stretches back a long way, with the late 19th industrialist Andrew Carnegie seeing it as an important obligation of the very wealthy. In the modern day, Bill Gates has taken up this call, suggesting that the very wealthy should donate half their wealth to philanthropic causes, and endowing his own foundation with something in the order of $50 billion. This book brings together case studies of the most influential of these foundations over the last one hundred years: the Rockefeller, Ford, and Gates' Foundations, investigating their impact on education and research, health and agriculture. The book concludes by asking whether global south foundations such as Al Waleed Philanthropies, Tata Trusts, and those from China may point to the future of global philanthropic foundations. The sheer scale of resources that foundations can devote to their work results in significant influence in global politics, to the point that Foundations can drive and even set government policy. This influence is likely to grow in the post-Covid environment, making this book an important resource for researchers, practitioners and policy makers working on global development.
