We have become accustomed to violence, but we do not need to accept it. Our study of workplace violence, terrorism, and other forms of dysfunctional behavior associated with work suggests that both managers and non-managers would like to reduce the risks associated with violence at the workplace. The book is designed to help do just that. You can be underpaid, overworked, or get fired even though you are performing well. You can be a victim of sabotage or harassment even though—or sometimes because!—you are doing an outstanding job. You can be a victim on company premises of an angry, psychologically impaired, or chemically dependent manager, non-manager, former coworker, spouse, or even a stranger. Among other sources structural unemployment was blamed for the lack of response of unemployment to increasing aggregate demand. Renewed attention was thus devoted to an analysis of the magnitude and the development of structural unemployment as well to its possi ble determinants. In this literature, the Beveridge curve experienced a resurrection and, at first glance, it seemed to be an appropriate tool to analyse the aforementioned issues. However, it was soon recognized that the Beveridge curve, i. e. the relation between unemployment and vacancies, was anything but stable, thus requiring a care ful distinction between dynamic loops around a (stable?) long-run Beveridge curve and possible shifts due to, say, an increasing mismatch between labor supplied and demanded. The controversy is far from being settled at the time of this writing. This book contains a collection of hitherto unpublished papers which are devoted to a theoretical and econometric analysis of structural unemployment. The papers put considerable emphasis on the question to what extent the Beveridge curve can serve as an adequate tool for such studies. The countries under consideration are Germany and Austria. In what follows a very brief summary of each paper will be outlined. Franz and Siebeck present, at some length, a theoretical and econometric analysis of the Beveridge curve in Germany.

Strong private sector credit growth has persisted for over a decade and resulted in household debt that is high relative to peers. Credit is now growing in riskier segments. Housing prices have also started to reflect pressures from strong credit growth. The paper describes assessments of household and private sector debt levels relative to fundamentals. It also describes the policy response to date and assesses its effectiveness. Econometric analysis suggests that household indebtedness is growing at a faster pace than implied by economic fundamentals. The credit cycle seems to have reached its post-crisis high. The credit cyclogram, compiled by the National Bank of Slovakia, is an aggregation of a set of core and supplementary variables evaluated against distributions of their own historical values to disentangle factors cyclical credit growth.
