Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overland to India, Vol. 2 of 2 Just as we were setting out on February 19 a small caravan arrived from Khur on its way to Cha-meji. Its leader warned us most emphatically not to cross the great Kevir bay, which would certainly be under water in some parts, and wherein any case we Should quite ruin our camels. Ah, well, we thought, we shall see when we come nearer, and we marched on in good but cold weather (388 at seven o'clock) and under a sky streaked and mottled by small white clouds in quite the same regular arrangement as the small ridges and lines in the sand of a Shallow lake. Small dwindling rain-furrows ran towards the east-north-east, and on the right we left a small longish pool formed by rain water. Beyond the eastern point of the range of hills on our right now appeared another higher range with snow on its crest, called Kuh-i-pusht-i-badam, while to the south east the country was quite flat and open, and to the east south-east was seen a hill called Kuh-i-rabat-i-khan. He fancies he hears the murmur Of warm winds among the palms and mango trees, and thinks Of the teeming life and the continual struggle for existence in tropical jungles. He seems to see the brilliant trains of Indian princes, swarming crowds of dusky Hindus, grand troops of elephants, tigers trying to escape from the bloodthirsty hunters, gilded pagodas, and marble temples white as the Himalayan snows. Download or read book The Overland Monthly Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Bret Harte and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Overland Monthly, Vol. 2 The vowel is often duplicated in monosyllables to indicate that the first is to have its long sound as feet, seen, and green. Two different vowels are often placed in juxtaposition for the same purpose as rain, moan, gauge. The addition of mute e to words, al though some dispute has arisen con cerning its origin, is at present but an orthographical expedient to indicate the long sound of the preceding vowel: as not, note, man, mane, pan, pane, rat, rate, pin, pine, etc.; the words of this class being exceedingly numerous. In general, all double consonants indicate the short sound of a preceding vowel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Journey to the North of India, Vol. 1 of 2: Overland From England, Through Russia, Persia, and Affghaunistaun Here we cashed our bills for Russian ducats, which I believe are a good remittance to most parts of the world, and on the 17th of October resumed our route. From the last of a succession of hills, which rise gradually above each other in a distance of four verstes, we looked back upon the painted and gilded roofs and cupolas of the city of forty times forty churches, which lay en masse on either side of the river Moskva, backed by a deep blue sky that told of snow while we looked the flakes began to fall thick about us; so, wrapping ourselves in our fur cloaks, we set our faces resolutely towards Asia, and bade the Isvoschtshicks give the rein and whip to their horses. Book Overland to India Volume 2

Download or read book Overland to India Volume 2 written by Dr. Sven Hedin and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2023-05-05 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed account of the journey from Trebizond to Quetta. The route took Hedin through Erzerum, skirted Mount Ararat to Etchmiadzin and Nakichevan (the grave of Noah), and thence by Tabriz and Kasvin to Teheran, where the first part of his journey ended. The second part took him to Nasratabad in Seistan; the third to Quetta, where he may be said to have reached India . . . . The two volumes in which it is recorded contain a vast deal more than is above indicated. There are many digressions (from the bare record of travel) , some of which will not appeal to the general reader, whose interest is chiefly confined to the tale of travel, but many of them will command the attention of geographers and experts . . . . To mention a few, there are notes about Marco Polo's travels, about the Euphrates, Mesopotamia and Nineveh, chapters on travels in the Kavír, on the march of Alexander the Great, on post-glacial climatic changes in Persia, on the distribution of desert and on the plague. This is volume two out of two.

Book excerpt: Why Not? After all, no-one had ever done it before. It would be one of the longest of all overland journeys – half way round the world, from the English Channel to Singapore. They knew that several expeditions had already tried it. Some had got as far as the desrts of Persia; a few had even reached the plains of India. But no one had managed to go on from there: over the jungle clad mountains of Assam and across northern Burma to Thailand and Malaya. Over the last 3,000 miles it seemed there were ‘just too many rivers and too few roads'. But no-one really knew … In fact, their problems began much earlier than that. As mere undergraduates, they had no money, no cars, nothing. But with a cool audacity, which was to become characteristic, they set to work – wheedling and cajoling. First, they coaxed the BBC to come up with some film for a possible TV series. They then gently persuaded the manufacturers to lend them two factory-fresh Land Rovers. A publisher was even sweet-talked into giving them an advance on a book. By the time they were ready to go, their sponsors (more than 80 of them) ranged from whiskey distillers to the makers of collapsible buckets. In late 1955, they set off. Seven months and 12,000 miles later, two very weary Land Rovers, escorted by police outriders, rolled into Singapore – to flash bulbs and champagne. Now, fifty years on, their book, ‘First Overland', is republished – with a foreword by Sir David Attenborough. After all, it was he who gave them that film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Overland Guide-Book: A Complete Vade-Mecum for the Overland Traveller, to India Via Egypt The purpose of this little volume, which I have now the honour to submit to the public, is to combine, in a compact and convenient form, all the information necessary to the prosecution of the journey Overland to India and vice versé. Scarcely a day passes that I am not asked, either personally or by letter, to guide some intending traveller in his arrangements for the trip, and even to advise him as to the preferable routes, the expense, the manner of the voyage, &c. Ignorance on all these points induces inapposite and irrelevant ques tions and it is not unusual to find, at the end of correspondence or a prolonged interview, that the querist is as far from the possession of the knowledge he desired to acquire as he was when he first pre ferred his application. No clear and satisfactory information can possibly be obtained by a desultory conversation or fragmentary epistles hence the value of a systematic and comprehensive arrange ment of all the facts and suggestions pertaining to the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Overland Monthly, Vol. 10: July-December, 1887 Dona Isabel's face clouded. Upon the next day she had hoped to part company with her unwelcome guest forever; and now part of her purpose in leaving the haci enda was already frustrated. Ruiz was scarcely less disquieted; a glance at Chinita's triumphant countenance confirmed his apr prehensions. Pepe, at least, had not returned to the hacienda. He had had it in his mind to have the servant strictly watched. It had not occurred to him that upon the first day he would attempt to evade him, and fulfill Chinita's wild project of summoning Ramirez. He inwardly cursed his own folly, and the duplicity of Ashley, whom he had not for a moment supposed in sympathy with the plot. They had even laughed at it together as the foolish dream of an imaginative girl. Now to his apprehensions was added a burning jealousy. For Chinita's sake the American had doubtless made her cause his own; with such an ally it was not impossible that he might see himself confronted by the man, who, he knew well, never forgave a slight, never left unrevenged an injury.
