Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over-the-Rhine is a place where a building owner can stumble upon huge caverns underneath a basement floor or find long-forgotten tunnels that travel far below city streets. ts present mysteries are attributable to a past that transcends the common story of how cities change over time: it is the story of how a clash between immigrants and "real Americans" helped rob Cincinnati of its image, its soul and its economy. In the 1870s, OTR was comparable to the cultural hearts of Paris and Vienna. By the turn of the last century, the neighborhood was home to roughly three hundred saloons and had over a dozen breweries within or adjacent to its borders. It was beloved by countless citizens and travelers for the exact reasons that others successfully sought to destroy it. This is the story of how the heart of the "Paris of America" became a time capsule.

Book excerpt: From rowing the canals of Amsterdam to riding a cow through the Alps, via Cold War nuclear bunkers, raucous Gay Pride parades, tranquil Lake Constance and snowy mountain climbs, The Rhine blends travelogue and offbeat history to tell the fascinating story of how a great river helped shape a continent. SHORTLISTED FOR THE STANFORD DOLMAN TRAVEL BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD The Rhine is one of the world's greatest rivers. Once forming the outer frontier of the Roman Empire, it flows 800 miles from the social democratic playground of the Netherlands, through the industrial and political powerhouses of Germany and France, to the wealthy mountain fortresses of Switzerland and Liechtenstein. For five years, Ben Coates lived alongside a major channel of the river in Rotterdam, crossing it daily, swimming and sailing in its tributaries. In The Rhine, he sets out by bicycle from the Netherlands where it enters the North Sea, following it through Germany, France and Liechtenstein, to where its source in the icy Alps. He explores the impact that the Rhine has had on European culture and history and finds out how influences have flowed along and across the river, shaping the people who live alongside it.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to the Rhine: Describing a Summer Tour From Dusseldorf to Mainz, Including Visits to the Valleys of the Nahe, Lahn, Moselle, Ahr, the Siebengebirge, Etc The Rhine with its 730 miles is the longest river of Germany, and the largest and most beautiful part of its course is the 440 miles which are in German territory. The navigable part of the Rhine is usually divided into three sections. The part from Basel to Bingen is called the Upper Rhine ('Oberrhein'); the Middle Rhine ('Mittelrhein') stretches from Bingen to Cologne and is 100 miles in length; at the 'holy city', the Lower Rhine ('Niederrhein') begins, and extends to the mouth of the river in the North Sea, a distance of 215 miles. The Rhenish 'Schiefergebirge', which the river breaks through from Bingen downwards, consists chiefly of greywacke schist, with islands of porphyry and trachyte. These rocks belong to the Palaeozoic Period and therefore contain no fossilised animal remains. To be more exact, they belong to the Devonian Age - the latest subdivision of the Palaeozoic Period. At Remagen-Honningen a volcanic zone intervenes, which shows itself in hot and mineral springs here, and also in the Ahr valley. The shipping trade of the Rhine is as old as our knowledge of the stream. When the Romans held sway on the banks of the Rhine, we know it was an important highway for commerce, and as early in the Middle Ages as the 10th century, the Rhine was the chief channel for interchange of goods between Germany and England.
