Download or read book Cured My Ovarian Cancer Story written by Joyce Wadler and published by E-Quality Press. This book was released on 2013-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1991 Joyce Wadler, a 43 year-old New York City reporter, had breast cancer which was caught early and successfully treated. She thought her cancer problems were over, she knew of no other cases of breast cancer in her family. Four years later Ms. Wadler was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer. She also learned that she was carrying a genetic mutation, BRCA-1, which has been found in Ashkenazic Jews and which gives women a higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer. "Cured: My Ovarian Cancer Story", which originally appeared as, 'Cancer Redux', a two part cover story in New York Magazine, is the story of how Joyce Wadler successfully overcame cancer a second time. It also includes information about how women can try to protect themselves. ---------- MY HAIR STARTS FALLING OUT ten days after chemotherapy: a few strands on a white tablecloth at the Knickerbocker restaurant. I am having lunch with a guy I met at a party two months ago. The guy is sniffly. "I'm fighting something off," he says. "Me too," I say. I wait a few days, till my hair comes out in clumps in the shower, then, as directed, I go back to a wig store on the West Side where they shave the rest of my hair and do the final fit for the wig. They don't like to buzz you until the hair is really coming out. They say it's too traumatic. When I get home, I take off my wig and all my clothes, and stand in front of a full-length mirror and check me out naked. I am quite astonishingly bald, but I am still dramatically girly: My waist goes in, almost everything else goes out. I look sort of sci-fi. On the Starship Enterprise, they would probably go for me in a big way. Space Tomato, I call me. Maybe I should take out a personals ad: Mature Woman Seeks Trekkie. Book Ovarian Cancer You Can Not Be Serious

Download or read book Ovarian Cancer You Can Not Be Serious written by Janice M. Coggins MSW and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2013-02-25 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THIS IS THE NOW. I am still here. Call me blessed. Call me determined. And yes, call me very grateful. Now call me a writerbecause I need to share my story. I have been diagnosed with the fifth most common cancer killer of women: ovarian cancer. I have broken through to a brighter time. My mission now is to increase the likelihood that many more stricken-women, may also live beyond the onset, diagnosis, and treatment of ovarian cancer. This book begins with my story of being here as a survivor. I love to meet other survivors because they are like instant family. I often hug them simply because we have walked the same path. For me, having cancer is real, and I embrace it as being part of who I am now. Just as I believe that each time Moses spoke of God, and Paul spoke of Jesus, it deepened their relationships with God. So it is with me. Telling my story often helps keep me in touch with my true self and with my God. Cancer may be part of me, but I am more than just cancer. And I refuse to give it more power than it is due.

Book You Have Ovarian Cancer

Download or read book You Have Ovarian Cancer written by and published by . This book was released on 2016-10-24 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Georgia Ovarian Cancer Alliance (GOCA) was formed in 1998 by a group of Atlanta area ovarian cancer patients and survivors. They met at the St. Joseph's Gynecologic Cancer Support Group. They each had their individual story, but one common element existed in each story. They knew nothing about ovarian cancer before they were diagnosed. This lack of information was the catalyst for them to begin pooling their energies and passions with the intent to bring awareness of ovarian cancer and early detection to the forefront of women's health issues. Their initial battle cry of "Awareness. Knowledge. and Action" with the desire to educate Georgia's women, of all ages, their families, and healthcare providers about the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer is still very much the focus of GOCA today. Since the beginning, GOCA has transformed from an idea, hatched at a founder's dining room table, into a very strong state-wide based non-profit organization, led by individuals touched by ovarian cancer alongside business leaders. Through our Education & Awareness and Community Outreach Program in conjunction with a strong statewide base of supporters, volunteers, partners, and sponsors we continue to reach as many people as possible with this life saving information. GOCA Mission Statement To increase awareness and educate Georgia's women, of all ages, and their families as well as the healthcare community about the risks and symptoms of ovarian cancer that may lead to earlier detection and treatment.

Book excerpt: This dissertation explores the lived experiences of ovarian cancer. I used feminist ethnographic methods of in-depth interviews and focus groups to collect data from 28 ovarian cancer survivors in Northwest Ohio and Southern Michigan. The concepts of social support, uncertainty in illness, and intersectionality are used to understand women’s experiences of the disease and their quality of life post-treatment. My grounded theory analysis shows the ovarian cancer experience as a process involving three phases including (not)making sense, owning the experience, and becoming a survivor. The phases are neither linear nor distinct, and each presents unique challenges to survivors, helping shape how they make meaning and communicate about their experiences. I identify managing uncertainty as the core variable in the ovarian cancer experience; uncertainty is high at diagnosis, plateaus during treatment, heightens again at the end of treatment, and remains in the backgrounds of women’s lives as they navigate treatment aftereffects and/or recurrences. The ovarian cancer experience is influenced by women’s age, religion, socioeconomic status, level of available social support, stage of disease, and treatment protocol. These factors work through and with each other to impact women’s meaning making about the disease. This research helps demystify the ovarian cancer experience and puts human faces on the disease. It also provides a deeper understanding about the factors that influence women’s experiences of ovarian cancer and the communicative strategies they use to determine their experiences.

Sex and Cancer features stories that illuminate insights about the impact of gynecologic and reproductive cancers on relationships. Book Arrest the Silent Killer

Download or read book Arrest the Silent Killer written by Marion Seferth and published by Sid Harta Pub. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arrest the Silent Killer is the author's personal account of her courageous battle with ovarian cancer, from the frustrating search to final diagnosis in 1997, then up to the present day. It is a remarkable story of one woman's fight against a disease, known as the silent killer, she refused to give in to. We meet her family and share her ups and downs of everyday family life, and share the delight she feels in her beloved grandchildren as she makes her physical, emotional and spiritual journey to healing. We laugh with her and cry with her, but above all we share hope with her. This book is a light in the darkness as it gives hope and sustenance to thousands of other women who have been diagnosed with cancer. The author's main aim is to bring awareness of ovarian cancer into the public arena, and provide accurate medical information in layman's terms, not easily accessible to the general public, enabling women to pursue early diagnosis and possible cure. The Appendices include information on the nature of ovarian cancer, treatment options, how chemotherapy works, making palliative care user-friendly, and pain control. Hope is the message, and love is the reason. Author Bio-Marion Seferth grew up and was educated in suburban Melbourne before training as a nurse in the early '60s. She married soon after graduating and settled in a semi-rural area. Suburbia caught up with them, so she and her husband and two children moved to a hobby farm in the Yarra Valley, where she wrote about her experiences there for numerous magazines and local newspapers. They separated when the children were teenagers, and she later remarried and settled in Healesville, where she wrote a series of children'sbooks. She moved to Northeast Victoria after her second marriage ended, where she wrote this book in the idyllic farm setting of El Dorado, close to her beloved grandsons.
