Book Outside the Frame A Mother s Journey Through Autism

Download or read book Outside the Frame A Mother s Journey Through Autism written by Ellie Duley and published by Prominence Publishing. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The stories about raising Jon are both heartbreaking and affirming for anyone who is currently going through raising a person who is non-verbal with autism and seizure disorder or has been a big part of a person with autism's life." This book came about after a 33-year marriage disintegrated. By the time divorce came around, author Ellie Duley had a master's degree, a business, and had written a book but still felt a little empty. To make meaning of her life, she started writing down different antics that she remembered from raising Jon. Memories came flooding back while recalling the tougher times and the fierce love and protection that she felt raising both her kids. Ellie Duley's career was put on hold for the first 20 years of Jon's life. When asked why she felt compelled to write this book, she stated, "I think I wrote this to affirm (if only to myself) that those years weren't wasted. I know they weren't, but something made me want to tell the stories of raising Jon. This therapy helped me though a tough time." In the early years, Jon learned to ski with his family, stole French fries, blocked others' access to many slides, and learned to deal with his mother's breast cancer. He also played with his poop and tried to eat raw meat off the floor of a local grocery store. This book project started as a labor of love, and the author recalls receiving a great deal of support from people who knew her in the past when the going was tougher. Jon was a bit of a mystery, so it seemed that people close to them were eager to see how the raising of Jon unfolded. This feeling of gratitude for the support of these wonderful people kept the author going in raising a non-verbal child to a semi-independent adult who lives at a group home in a wonderful community in Maine. About the Author Ellie Stewart Duley led a remarkably unremarkable life until her time raising her son Jon who was born with autism. Raised in the suburbs of western Massachusetts, Duley attended the University of Maine only one month after her family moved to Virginia. After college, Duley married and remained in Maine where she still lives with her 8-year-old Newfoundland. Somewhere along the way, Duley received her master's in school counseling and worked in public schools as a counselor before divorcing in 2017.

Book excerpt: Everyone experiences happiness and sorrow, anger, joy, fear, surprise, loneliness. Kids on the spectrum feel just as deeply, but they often sound different, have more issues with confidence, and they don't know what comes after "hi," making their ability to focus and succeed in social situations hard. With Marston, I'd start every morning believing today was the day he was going to look into my eyes and really want me. He'd reach for me, smile for the first time. Walk. He'd say, "Mama," "Daddy," or even "ball." By 1998, when he turned three, I'd uttered that same old prayer a thousand times, and I was more determined than ever to shatter the glass wall that separated my son from the rest of the world. Autism wasn't widely talked about back then, and Facebook (networking) didn't exist. Eric and I were on our own. This memoir is our journey of educating Marston through programs like The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, Vision Therapy, the Tomatis(R) Method, Marion Blank's approach to reading, hypotherapy, balloon dancing, and the list goes on...until we discovered stem cell replacement therapy. Love, faith, hard work, and teamwork have taught Marston how to strike up a

Book excerpt: Lina was a precocious toddler—charming, chatty, joyful. At the age of three, in the aftermath of her second MMR vaccine, first came a seizure, and then, to her parents’ horror, the loss of Lina’s ability to play, use language, and control her impulses. Over the next few years they continued to lose Lina. She communicated her acute discomfort by biting, screaming, hitting, laughing maniacally, and throwing violent tantrums. As a single mother, with the help of her ex-husband, Helena Hjalmarsson tirelessly pursued every possible avenue to find a diagnosis, and more importantly a treatment, for her daughter, and the search continues to this day. Lina is nine. Special schools, restrictive diets, sensory stimulation, relationship-based therapy, gastrointestinal links, homeopathy, and allergy treatment are all explored in detail. Hjalmarsson finds out what helps Lina and what doesn’t. She introduces sign language to Lina. She engages in lengthy daily intensive one-on-one sessions. With the help of her ex, angelic babysitters, Lina’s exceptionally empathetic younger sister, and supportive friends, Hjalmarsson manages to create a meaningful life for Lina, and for herself—a life of love and transcendence. Lina, for all her challenges, has much to teach, and Hjalmarsson is a receptive student: finding joy in moments of connection, learning to live in the present, taking nothing for granted, accepting what others find unbearable, and finding a strength and spiritual base for inspiration and healing. Unflinchingly honest and courageous, Finding Lina will open the eyes and hearts and minds of all parents, whether they have a child with autism or not.

Book I Have Been Buried Under Years of Dust

Download or read book I Have Been Buried Under Years of Dust written by Valerie Gilpeer and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-04-06 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A remarkable memoir by a mother and her autistic daughter who’d long been unable to communicate—until a miraculous breakthrough revealed a young woman with a rich and creative interior life, a poet, who’d been trapped inside for more than two decades. “I have been buried under years of dust and now I have so much to say.” These were the first words twenty-five-year-old Emily Grodin ever wrote. Born with nonverbal autism, Emily’s only means of communicating for a quarter of a century had been only one-word responses or physical gestures. That Emily was intelligent had never been in question—from an early age she’d shown clear signs that she understood what was going on though she could not express herself. Her parents, Valerie and Tom, sought every therapy possible in the hope that Emily would one day be able to reveal herself. When this miraculous breakthrough occurred, Emily was finally able to give insight into the life, frustrations, and joys of a person with autism. She could tell her parents what her younger years had been like and reveal all the emotions and intelligence residing within her; she became their guide into the autistic experience. Told by Valerie, with insights and stories and poetry from Emily, I Have Been Buried Under Years of Dust highlights key moments of Emily’s childhood that led to her communication awakening—and how her ability rapidly accelerated after she wrote that first sentence. As Valerie tells her family’s story, she shares the knowledge she’s gained from working as a legal advocate for families affected by autism and other neurological disorders. A story of unconditional love, faith in the face of difficulty, and the grace of perseverance and acceptance, I Have Been Buried Under Years of Dust is an evocative and affecting mother-daughter memoir of learning to see each other for who they are.

Book Autism and Gender

Download or read book Autism and Gender written by Jordynn Jack and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2014-05-15 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reasons behind the increase in autism diagnoses have become hotly contested in the media as well as within the medical, scholarly, and autistic communities. Jordynn Jack suggests the proliferating number of discussions point to autism as a rhetorical phenomenon that engenders attempts to persuade through arguments, appeals to emotions, and representational strategies. In Autism and Gender: From Refrigerator Mothers to Computer Geeks, Jack focuses on the ways gender influences popular discussion and understanding of autism's causes and effects. She identifies gendered theories like the “refrigerator mother” theory, for example, which blames emotionally distant mothers for autism, and the “extreme male brain” theory, which links autism to the modes of systematic thinking found in male computer geeks. Jack's analysis reveals how people employ such highly gendered theories to craft rhetorical narratives around stock characters--fix-it dads, heroic mother warriors rescuing children from autism--that advocate for ends beyond the story itself while also allowing the storyteller to gain authority, understand the disorder, and take part in debates. Autism and Gender reveals the ways we build narratives around controversial topics while offering new insights into the ways rhetorical inquiry can and does contribute to conversations about gender and disability.

Book No Map to This Country

Download or read book No Map to This Country written by Jennifer Noonan and published by Da Capo Lifelong Books. This book was released on 2016-04-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is a rising epidemic that affects 1 in 68 children. When Jennifer Noonan's son was diagnosed in 2009, she refused to accept the conventional wisdom that autism was largely permanent, instead launching a relentless investigation into the very latest dietary, immunological, and metabolic research available. "I certainly had no reason to believe at that time that autism was treatable," she writes, "but somehow I decided, in my classically pigheaded way, that it would be." This spirited audacity gave her not only courage -- and ultimately success -- in the face of such a devastating diagnosis, but also a self-aware and darkly funny perspective on her own faults and struggles over the next six years. With equal parts defiance, tenacity, and wry humor, No Map to This Country details one family's journey through the modern autism epidemic, and the lengths to which a mother will go to heal her family. Neither a medical manual nor a heartwarming tale of growth, Noonan's groundbreaking yet profoundly relatable memoir seamlessly combines cutting-edge research with a gripping and unapologetic account of her family's fight for recovery.
