Book Popular Children s Literature in Britain

Download or read book Popular Children s Literature in Britain written by Julia Briggs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 541 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astonishing success of J.K. Rowling and other contemporary children's authors has demonstrated how passionately children can commit to the books they love. But this kind of devotion is not new. This timely volume takes up the challenge of assessing the complex interplay of forces that have created the popularity of children's books both today and in the past. The essays collected here ask about the meanings and values that have been ascribed to the term 'popular'. They consider whether popularity can be imposed, or if it must always emerge from children's preferences. And they investigate how the Harry Potter phenomenon fits into a repeated cycle of success and decline within the publishing industry. Whether examining eighteenth-century chapbooks, fairy tales, science schoolbooks, Victorian adventures, waif novels or school stories, these essays show how historical and publishing contexts are vital in determining which books will succeed and which will fail, which bestsellers will endure and which will fade quickly into obscurity. As they considering the fiction of Angela Brazil, Enid Blyton, Roald Dahl and J.K. Rowling, the contributors carefully analyse how authorial talent and cultural contexts combine, in often unpredictable ways, to generate - and sometimes even sustain - literary success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Linda Kohanov is beloved for her groundbreaking articulation of “the way of the horse,” an experiential wisdom known to riders for centuries but little studied or adapted to off-horse use. Now Kohanov takes those horse-inspired insights on the nonverbal elements of exceptional communication and leadership into the realms of our workplaces and relationships. Here we explore the benefits of “nonpredatory power” in developing assertiveness, fostering creativity, dealing with conflict, and heightening mind-body awareness. In “A Brief History of Power,” the first part of this far-reaching book, Kohanov profiles cultural innovators who employed extraordinary nonverbal leadership skills to change history, usually on horseback: Winston Churchill, George Washington, Alexander the Great, and Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha), among others. She also draws on the behavior of mature horse herds, as well as the herding cultures of Africa and Mongolia, to debunk theories of dominance hierarchies, challenge ingrained notions of “survival of the fittest,” and demonstrate the power of a consensual leadership in which governing roles are fluid. Kohanov then adapts these lessons into twelve powerful guiding principles we can all incorporate into our work and personal lives. Eloquent and provocative, this is horse sense for everyone who seeks to thrive in the herds we all run in — our communities, careers, families, and friendships.

Book Aquarius Now

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marilyn Ferguson
  • Publisher : Weiser Books
  • Release : 2005-10-10
  • ISBN : 1609256603
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Aquarius Now written by Marilyn Ferguson and published by Weiser Books. This book was released on 2005-10-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Thomas Paine did for the American Revolution with the publication of Common Sense, Marilyn Ferguson does for the transpersonal revolution. Marilyn Ferguson is one of the preeminent thinkers, gatherers, and interpreters of research on the cutting-edge fields of human consciousness. The Aquarian Conspiracy, published in 1980, has sold millions of copies, is continuously in print, and was hailed as the "handbook of the New Age," by USA Today. In her newer book, Aquarius Now, movement pioneer Ferguson reexamines the paradigm shift to a more mindful society. She sees us caught in a mindless materialism that threatens our material existence. We are seduced by what she calls the ‘Cult of Numbers’, obsessed with competition, with winning and losing, afraid of anything that can't be seen or measured, and in the grip of an economic model that says only that which generates economic growth is worth pursuing. What can we do? Ferguson boldly tells the truth--we have no enemy except ourselves and the mess we've made individually and collectively by refusing to see what we're doing to our own bodies, to society, and the Earth itself. We've refused to consider the clues in front of our faces. The imbalance we see outside ourselves only mirrors the imbalance within. The way to heal the imbalance is to heal ourselves. The way to heal ourselves is to pay attention, to witness. We need to take responsibility for our own actions. We need to heed the words of the myriad teachers and skills at our disposal. We need to learn to rely on our own "radical common sense." The task is not to climb a mountain, but to navigate a river. We have to stop thinking of ourselves as conquerors and start thinking of ourselves as fellow travelers' with other human beings and every living being on this planet, including the planet itself. Ferguson dares to ask the question, "Can we change?" and concludes that we can and we must change. The Age of Aquarius will occur when we want it to occur.

Book Observation Notation

Download or read book Observation Notation written by Andrew Forge and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2018-07-17 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andrew Forge was an English painter and a teacher of painting (Yale University 1975–1994), renowned and respected on both sides of the Atlantic. But he was also known for his writing on the arts, spanning almost fifty years, which was admired for the delicacy and openness of his language and the ways in which he thought about the processes of perception in all their sensual possibilities. The selection here of his writings is intended to show the range of his interests and the particularly personal interpretations he brought to all he saw in an art with which he was so passionately engaged. It is also a fascinating record of the arts that were of concern in the years he wrote, from the work of Rubens to that of Rauschenberg and Frankenthaler, as well as, especially in his last essays, the work of his many friends and associates: Kenneth Martin, Euan Uglow, Jake Berthot, William Bailey, and Graham Nickson.

Book The Odyssey of Communism

Download or read book The Odyssey of Communism written by Michaela Praisler and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume looks into the ways in which film has contaminated and re-shaped culture(s) and the collective unconscious, at both local and global levels, arguing that our lives have been impacted by the ‘then’ that we keep revisiting, lest we forget. It takes the reader from the Berlin Wall to China, and from the terror of communist political prisons and labour camps to the rosy image promoted by propaganda. A key point throughout the text is its interdisciplinary nature, as it brings together literature and film scholars, directors, sociologists and philosophers, whose overall conclusion is that communism, lingering in mentalities, still needs interrogation. Structured along four parts which trace a Homeric (or rather Joycean) journey to a home metonymysed by the long-awaited freedom, this book sets out from the gloomiest aspects of totalitarianism in the Romanian, Serbian and Soviet ‘Hades(es)’ of traumatic psychological and physical experiences and of imposed silencing. The second part gathers together case studies of films illustrating more optimistic views of communism as ‘spring’ (in the USSR) or as a ‘golden age’ (in Romania), thus narcotising the communist ‘subjects’ and preventing them from seeing the actual inferno. The third section offers filmic accounts of the aftermaths of communism, engaging the readers in a nostalgic process that revisits, questions, reflects on and remembers communism on a larger, world stage. The coda rounds up the volume (and the journey therein) by crossing genre frontiers to written narratives with a cinematic component.

Book Double Standards The Selective Outrage of the Left

Download or read book Double Standards The Selective Outrage of the Left written by Larry Elder and published by Creators Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-30 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Larry Elder calls them like he sees them. And in this collection of some of his best columns, he wields his pen against anyone who doesn’t. Welfare, the Iran nuclear deal, Ferguson, the Republican primaries and the ascendancy of Donald Trump: Elder takes on a breadth of controversial issues. His incisive wit cuts right to the heart of hypocrisy in public discourse, particularly that of the left -- which taps into its “moral” outrage when it’s politically expedient and becomes curiously docile when it’s not. “The truth will not set you free if delivered without hope,” he writes in one column, quoting his late mother. Though he’s not hopeful about certain politicians, Elder is fundamentally optimistic about the American people: He believes in their power to overcome almost any circumstance -- if only government would stop telling them they can’t.
