Download or read book A History of Canadian Economic Thought written by Robin Neill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 1991-06-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In A History of Canadian Economic Thought, Robin Neill relates the evolution of economic theory in Canada to the particular geographical and political features of the country. Whilst there were distinctively Canadian economic discourses in nineteenth-century Ontario and early twentieth-century Quebec, Neill argues that these have now been absorbed into the broader North American mainstream. He also examines the nature and importance of the staple theory controversy and its appositeness for the Canadian case. With full accounts of the work of major Canadian economists including John Rae, H.A. Innis and Harry Johnson, A History of Canadian Economic Thought is the first definitive treatment of the subject for 30 years.

Download or read book Economic Growth in Canada written by N. Harvey Lithwick and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1967-12-15 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely study fills some serious gaps in the historical record of economic development in Canada and compares it with that in the United States pointing out the parallels in development that have resulted from similarities in tastes and technologies and the high degree of monility between two economies. In addition, it clarifies certain mistaken notions about the Canadian economy by evaluating the sources of past growth and anticipating the potential open to the country. This edition includes a chapter which examines Canadian experience over the past decade and compares it with that of the United States. This work will be valuable to economists, policy makers and the informed layman. There is a minimal amount of complex mathematics and the bulk of the statistical material is relegated to the apendices.
Download or read book Canadian Quandary written by Harry Gordon Johnson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2005 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry G. Johnson is best known as one of Canada's most respected economists, particularly for his research on international trade and finance and monetary policy. But Johnson was also a prolific and influential public intellectual. A sharp and popular polemicist, he wrote on a wide range of subjects, from advertising to affluence to foreign investment, and was published in Punch and The Spectator as well as all the leading economic journals. The Canadian Quandary is a collection of "unbuttoned" pieces written in Johnson's witty and acerbic style between 1958 and 1963. Focusing on Canadian policy on trade and foreign policy, the volume includes Johnson's classic dismemberment of the Canadian nationalist movement. Although Trudeau's Foreign Investment Review Agency and National Energy Policy have been dismantled, economic nationalism persists; it is a testament to both the lucidity of Johnson's mind and the vigour and clarity of his writing that many of his opinions on this debate remain fresh, interesting, and relevant. William Watson's introduction provides an intriguing look at Johnson's life and work.

Download or read book Canada Since 1945 written by Robert Bothwell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1989-12-15 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the preface: "A visitor seeing Canada for the first time since 1939 might well conclude that Canada, even more than nations devastated by war, has become another country. On the surface so much remains the same: the Liberals prevail in Ottawa; the provinces quarrel with Ottawa and among themselves; and we worry about Americans in our future. But most of the pieces have been rearranged, and the effect of the picture is quite different...This is a book about our own times, and as such it expresses definite views. No reader will agree with everything we say. We have not tried to end debate; we have tried to clarify and broaden. We trust that our readers will be encouraged to seek for themselves a better understanding of where Canadians have been and what they have become." Book excerpt: From the Introduction: Our approach to this study is as follows. In Chapter 2 we consider Canadian merchandise trade in relation to other current-account items and to gross national expenditure. Chapter 3 examines the changes in commodity composition and sources of imports as well as the changes in composition and destintation of exports. We devote Chapter 4 to a consideration of a limited number of short-run influences on Canadian trade patterns, whereas in the following chapter the factor-endowment characteristics of trade in manufacture are examined. In Chapters 6, 7, and 8 we assess the relative significance of several long-run determinants of manufactured exports and imports and summarize a number of major conclusions of this study.
Download or read book Comparative National Balance Sheets written by Raymond W. Goldsmith and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1985-04 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Raymond W. Goldsmith has combined his experience, good sense, and flair with figures to construct this groundbreaking comparative study of the balance sheets of twenty of the largest nations. A pioneer in the field of national accounts, Goldsmith now presents a work that will be a valuable tool in tracking the economic progress of and between nations. The majority of the balance sheets were created especially for this project, their components gleaned from fragmentary and heterogeneous data. There are approximately 3,500 entries, each measuring the value of one type of tangible or financial asset or liability at a given date. Goldsmith's estimates are keyed to fifteen benchmark dates in the economic progress of the cited nations, and for twelve nations he was able to construct balance sheets dating back to the nineteenth century or earlier. Combined, worldwide balance sheet are included for 1950 and 1978. Comparative National Balance Sheets will provide an essential basis for the quantitative analysis of the long-term financial development of these nations. In addition to national balance sheets for all large countries except Brazil and China, sectoral balance sheets for France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Japan, and the United States in the postwar period are also included.

This book was released on 1963-12-15 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1958 the Canadian Political Science Association established a committee to look into ways and means of improving statistical research in the Social Sciences in Canada. One of the ways in which the committee thought this could be done was by establishing an annual forum where papers could be presented and discussed. The papers given at the first in 1960 have already appeared, and the second volume contains six of the ten papers given at Sir George Williams University, Montreal, in 1961. The papers are diverse alike in subject and statistical method, but most are concerned with recent population and labour movements. The papers are: "Regional Aspects of Labour Mobility in Canada, 1956-1959" by H.F. Greenway and G.W. Wheatley; "The Flow of Migration among the Provinces of Canada, 1951-1961" by Yoshiko Kasashara; "La Détermination des zones agricoles sous-marginates" by Gérald Fortin; "Some Calculations Relating to Trends and Fluctuations in the Post-War Canadian Labour Market" by Frank T. Denton; "Inter-Industry Estimates of Canadian Imports, 1949-1958" by T.I. Matuszewski, Paul R. Pitts, and John A. Swayer; and "Population Migration in the Atlantic Provinces" by Kari Levitt.
