Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Zoology To numerous authorities I acknowledge an obvious indebtedness, a detailed recognition of which would be out of place in a book of this kind. But I must thank Dr. Ramsay Traquair for helping me with the chapter on Fishes, Dr. Beard for revising the pages on the general structure of Vertebrates, and Dr. Gilchrist for suggestions as to the chapter on Molluscs. For the imperfections in these chapters I am, of course, alone responsible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Outlines of General Zoology

Download or read book Outlines of General Zoology written by Charles Girard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of General Zoology: Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Fishes, Invertebrates Zoology is a systematic exposition of animals according to their external and internal structure, and the functions of their organs. The internal structure can be frequently inferred from the external characters we may, for example, determine the aliment of an animal, and the structure of the digestive organs, by examining the teeth. This is, however, not sufficient in all cases, so that it becomes necessary also to examine the internal parts, because the relation between animals depends upon the entire organization; and this being well ascertained, the functions of the various organs can generally be determined without much difficulty. From the earliest period it was found necessary to group those animals together which were observed to have certain natural characters in common. We find, upon inquiry, that the endeavors to arrange animals systematically have taken two principal directions, which have been named natural and arttficz'al classification. The former has in view the classification of animals upon the greater or less perfection of the various organs, among which those connected with the circulation and oxygenation of the blood, locomotion, and digestion, hold a prominent place; the latter depends upon a character or habit arbitrarily chosen, and independent of others. A character, however, which may be regarded as unessential by one observer, will be considered as of the greatest importance by another. In the earlier stages of science, when the number of known species was comparatively small, artificial methods were popular, because they were considered easy of acquisition: now, however, it is found that they are calculated to give superficial ideas and that to present the condition of zoological science in its true light, a more philosophical system must be made use of. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Steps to Zoology All these animals it is the business of the zoologist to divide into groups, so that those may be placed together which are alike, and those may be separated, more or less remotely, which are different. The task is one that no single individual could accomplish by his own efforts 3 but it has been done by the combined and successive labours of many. In this way the entire animal kingdom has been divided into a number of great groups, distinguished from one another by peculiarities of structure. Book Outlines of Vertebrate Paleontology for Students of Zoology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Vertebrate Paleontology for Students of Zoology Classic Reprint written by Arthur Smith Woodward and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Vertebrate Paleontology for Students of Zoology The brief sketch of our present knowledge of extinct vertebrated animals attempted in this volume, is intended for students of Vertebrate Morphology and Zoology who are desirous of examining in detail the palaeontological aspect of their subject The advanced student has long appreciated the necessity for a more extended acquaintance with the facts of Embryology on completing his elementary course: he now begins to perceive that to understand the varied problems aright, he must also enter somewhat minutely into the past history of life on the globe as revealed by Palaeontology. The latter task in most cases proves more difficult than the former, since the trained powers of observation needed for interpreting the remains of organisms embedded in rock are somewhat different from those acquired in the study of fresh tissues and organs. Moreover, much of the essential literature of the subject is contained in unfamiliar works and serials dealing chiefly with rocks and minerals. An elementary handbook, presenting only the broad outlines of this branch of biological enquiry, will thus perhaps be found useful as an introduction to more elaborate treatises and original memoirs, which are difficult to understand without some preliminary idea of general principles. It is hoped that the plan adopted in the following pages will facilitate the comprehension of these general principles. The more important facts and generalizations are. printed in large type; while the more technical and descriptive matter, which ought to be studied with specimens in a museum, is intercalated in paragraphs of small type. Kind of guide-book for readers who are about to begin the study of Zoology. It aims at supplying a simple outline sketch of the animal kingdom, so as to enable the reader to map in, as it were, his own particular field of study in its right place in the general scheme of zoological know ledge. It is also intended to guide the reader to the use of standard works. A story has been told of a. Working man who saved up money enough to buy an expensive work on natural history, and of his disappointment, when he found that much of it was obsolete and the whole of it old-fashioned. It is to prevent disappointments of this sort that this little book is intended. I have given a. List of text-books and other literature of the subject, which, though far from exhaustive, practically includes everything that can be useful to the readers for whom I have written, and very likely a great deal. Book Outlines of Natural History for Beginners

Download or read book Outlines of Natural History for Beginners written by Henry Alleyne Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Natural History for Beginners: Being Descriptions of a Progressive Series of Zoological Types It has recently been .asserted that Zoology is not a subject which can profitably be taught in schools. In this opinion the author finds himself entirely unable to concur; and the present work is an attempt to solve, upon a new basis, the problem how the facts of Natural History can be imparted to the previously uninstnicted beginner in such a manner that he may obtain some real knowledge of the subject, and not a mere parrot-like acquaintance with a greater or less number of technical names. In this work, no other preliminary knowledge is assumed in the learner than some slight acquaintance with the chief functions of the animal body. Or, it is assumed that the teacher, in the absence of such preliminary knowledge, will explain to the learner the meaning of such terms as " breathing-organs," " circulatory system," or the like, and will point out in what the processes of respiration and circulation really consist. Instead of reviewing the divisions of the Animal Kingdom in a systematic manner, a series of common types has been chosen, representing the various classes of animals, and the leading peculiarities of these types have been described more or less fully. At the close of the description of each type, the characters which it possesses in common with the other members of its class are pointed out; and in a concluding chapter it is shown how the classes may be arranged under larger divisions or "sub-kingdoms." This is a rich field for scientific activity; its enormous range is a consequence, on the one hand, of the well-nigh exhaustless variety of animal organization, and, on the other hand, of the different points of view from which the zoologist enters upon the solution of his problem. Book Outlines of Economic Zo logy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Economic Zo logy Classic Reprint written by Albert Moore Reese and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Economic Zoology The book may be used in several ways. As followed by the author, the course may be given as a separate one to students who have already had the regular elementary course in general zoology. In this case the students will be familiar with the classification, structure and habits of most of the type forms discussed, but, if desired, additional labo ratory work may be arranged for the study of certain parasitic and other economically important forms not generally considered in a general laboratory course. Or, the text might be used in a beginning course in zoology by some amplification of the morphologic and other aspects and considerable increase in laboratory work. Again, it could well be used as supplementary reading with, say, one hour credit per semester for the year, in connection with the regular elementary course in general zoology. It is thought that, used in one or other of these ways or in some still different way, it should be especially useful to students in agriculture, who want a practical course. Various sources of information have been drawn upon, and recognized authorities in each subject consulted so far as possible. The publications of the Government, especially those of the Department of Agriculture, have been freely used and quoted. The figures have been borrowed largely, either from technical or from more popular works, whichever gave the best ideas of the animals portrayed; the source is indicated in every case. The brief bibliography at the end of the book is merely to aid the student, who may have become especially interested in some animal or group, to get more detailed information.
