Book Methods and Outlines in United States History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Methods and Outlines in United States History Classic Reprint written by J. A. Joseph and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Outlines in United States History Now why should we study history at all? First, it possesses the greatest guidance value among the several branches. There is much truth in the old saying, History repeats itself, and that ages differ more in kind than in degree. Where one age develops a fact of civilization in a certain way, or works out an advanced position for man, it will do it much the same way another time. There are certain inevitable truths controlling the ages, and when an age repeats itself, the corre sponding truth will be found leading its move ments. The things that killed Greece would kill America; the force that united the world under Rome, would unite the world again. The ele ments that destroyed Rome, would destroy any empire in any age. A late profound scholar and historian has said The present is the fruit Of the past, and the germ of the future. NO work can stand unless it grows out Of the real wants Of the age and strikes firm root in the soil Of history. No one who tramples on the rights Of a past gen cration can claim the regard of its posterity History will disregard him who disregards her. Set at naught the lessons Of history, and no man shall wield any lasting influence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Book An Outline of United States History for Use in the General Course in United States History Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History, for Use in the General Course in United States History American history is the story oi a most dramatic transformation. The curtain is rung up on a continent lying untouched, just as natural forces acting through millions of years of geologic history have chiseled it. It is inhabited by a few tribes of wandering Indians who traveled to it from Asia by way of Alaska no one knows when. The Indians are in the main without civilization. They live in an environment where great areas are as fertile as any in the world, where minerals are to be found in luxuriant abundance and where the climate is nowhere surpassed in stimulating productive effort. Yet the Indians are letting this priceless Opportunity slip. As the play unfolds, the penalty they pay is practical annihilation. Three thousand miles across the Atlantic in Europe is a climatic area as healthful and as stimulating as that of much of the United States. In fact, northern Europe and the Great Lake basin and northern Missis sippi Valley in America are the two areas in the world where the climate most stimulates productive effort. When the American drama opens, European peoples acting under the stimulus of this climate and utilizing intelligently the rich natural resources of their environment have emerged from barbarism into civilization. They are obviously of racial stock superior to that of the Indians who had opportunities practically as great. It is they, and not the Indians, who are destined to develop the untouched continent. The plot, therefore, is to be the story of the transference of European peoples and civilization to the wild country of America. American civilization is to be based primarily on this. But we see to the west across the vast Pacific three other civilizations, in India, in China and in Japan, older than that of Europe. They seem stagnant; they are not aggressive, yet we cannot help wondering what the plot would be if the Pacific were narrow and the Atlantic broad and if these lethargic Orientals should begin' taking possession of the new continent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Drill Lists in United States History: A Companion Book to "Outlines of United States History" This idea was partially in my mind when I presented the outlines; but further experience in what has been a practical investigation into the pedagogical principles involved in teaching this subject, has SO developed and systematized the idea as to make my methods quite different from, and, I think, much im proved upon, what they were at that time. SO great are these changes and improvements, I now feel it proper that I should again listen to the urgent and repeated requests Of my pupils, who are now teaching the subject throughout the land, and put into something Of permanency of form the materials and methods now constantly in use in my classes. In Part III, I print The Declaration Of Independence and The Articles of Confederation, papers which every teacher Of History needs, but which I did not print in the Outlines. The National Constitution will be found in the Outlines. I also print here a most valuable table taken from The American Almanac, a book which every teacher Should possess. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New American History and Government Outlines History is the study of the life of a people. "History is the biography of a society." "History is the essence of innumerable biographies." "Through the ages one increasing purpose runs." "The present is the fruit of the past and the germs of the future." "History knows not if, and might have been is a form of words unwritten in her book of phrases." - Ridpath. Europe Before the Discovery of America Peoples supposed to have visited America before 1492: Chinese, Egyptians. Phoenicians and Greeks. Northmen, 1000. Events hindering further visits: Invasions of Goths, Vandals and Huns, 350 to 476. Establishment of new nations. Conquest among nations. Lack of geographical knowledge. Causes leading to a revival of interest in new lands: Commercial ambition. Religious zeal. The crusades. The renaissance. What ancient Europe sent to the East: Metals, wood, pitch, woolen cloth, linen, black lead, wine and glassware. What ancient Europe brought from the East: Silks, cotton cloth and other fine dry goods. Dye woods and drugs. Precious stones and ivory. Spices and perfumes. Cities which controlled trade with the East: Venice, by way of the Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Indian ocean. Genoa, by way of Bosporus and Black Sea, and then by caravan to the East. Antioch, by way of Euphrates valley and Persian gulf. What changed trade routes: In 1453 the Turks captured Constantinople and refused to let the ships of other nations pass through the Bosporus. This closed Genoa's route, gave Venice a monopoly and made a new route desirable. New routes tried: Passage around Africa by Diaz, a Portuguese sailor, who succeeded in sailing around the south cape, which he named Cape of Storms, but the name was changed to Cape of Good Hope by King John of Portugal. Columbus' plan: To sail west until he reached China or India. "The great canon of history is its continuity." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of United States History IN writing this book, the author has had in mind the presentation of the essential facts in our history in a clear, brief manner, with such explanations, by means of maps, pictures, and foot-notes, as the size of the work permitted. In its preparation the pupil's point of View and peculiar needs have been kept constantly in mind, and the author wishes to express his gratitude to Miss Ginn for her very helpful suggestions and advice. She also kindly drew many of the maps which are inserted in the text, prepared the topical reviews which follow the several divisions of the book, and devised the questions that are printed in Appendix V. He further wishes to express his obligation to Miss Eva G. Moore for many thoughtful suggestions, and especially for her aid in the preparation of the bio graphical notes and of Appendix IV with its accompanying map. Bibliographies of books of American history which are suitable for school use are now so plentiful that it has not seemed wise to add to the bulk of this volume by the insertion of such lists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History by Topic: A Collection of Notes and Outlines of U. S. History, as Used in the Class Room of the Author This little book has been prepared, as its title indicates, as a guide for a topical history class; and has been used by the author for many years with marked success. It will, also, be found very useful for reviews or for reference. For use in the class, we would recommend that first the outline at the heading of each chapter be thoroughly learned (where no outline is given, the paragraph heads may be used). Let each pupil be able to write it upon the board; or, one write as the others dictate. Next study each item; the number for each lesson must vary with their importance and the capabilities of the pupils; but be thorough. The more kinds of text-books the better, as each author will have something that the others have not. Review often. Trace the causes of every important event; also, its effects. Any goo-d anecdote that you may give concerning an event, will help to impress that event upon the pupil's mind. Show them that peace is better than war, and that Hon esty is the best policy; giving as examples such contrasts as Richard H. Lee and Burr, Washington and Arnold, or Jackson and Buchanan. Do not dwell upon the detail of battle but upon its cause and effect. Learn few dates; a few important ones to mark epochs around which the others group - what care we whether a battle was fought May Ist or August 16th? We wish for results. To teach history, or any other branch, get your pupil interested. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
