Book Manual Pathology and Practice Being the Outline of the Course of Lectures Delivered Classic Reprint

Download or read book Manual Pathology and Practice Being the Outline of the Course of Lectures Delivered Classic Reprint written by Samuel Henry Dickson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual Pathology and Practice, Being the Outline of the Course of Lectures Delivered The science of Pathology of necessity presupposes and is founded upon an acquaintance with the doctrines of Physiology. As Physiology is the history of the several organs of the animal body and their functions, in a natural and healthy state; so Pathology consists in a knowledge of the morbid conditions of the organs and their functions. Disease has been variously defined; it always implies some irregularity or aberration in the performance of one or more of the functions of the body. This irregularity of action may be owing to obvious alterations in the structure of some parts of the body, or it may occur without our being able to detect any change in the structure of any part. Hence the distinction of diseases into Functional and Organic - and hence the importance of a close inspection of the condition of the parts of bodies dead from disease - a description of which constitutes the useful and interesting department of morbid anatomy. Disease may be local or general. It is local when the cause producing it acts with special force upon some single part or organ, while yet no participation in the morbid consequences is extended to other parts. It is general when the primary local affection has been communicated or extended throughout the system. Each of these may produce the other. It is plausibly argued that all diseases are primarily local, and afterwards radiated or rendered universal by nervous sympathies, and by vitiation of the fluids of the body. General disease may also produce local affections, as in hepatic and splenic inflammation from the concussions of fever, and in gout and scrofula. Causes of disease divided in the books into Remote and Proximate. I prefer to use the terms Efficient and Constituent. The proximate cause has been absurdly enough regarded as the disease itself. Book Principles of Medicine and Medicine Without Principle Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Medicine and Medicine Without Principle Classic Reprint written by Elijah de Voe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Medicine, and Medicine Without Principle When I first entered upon the duties of a Physician, I was struck by the fact that Medical Practice of all schools was destitute of any reliable principles governing treat ment of disease. That there was no certainty that the treatment of different physicians of any School of Medicine would be based upon the same fundamental ideas in any given case. Physicians of every school are liable to differ in regard to the expression of disease. They are also liable to differ as to treatment, even when they agree in diagnosis, i. E., in the description of disease. As I gained experience in the use of medicines I discovered certain land-marks or principles which have guided me in their application; and I have never known them to betray me. I publish an outline of these principles, because I believe them to be of great value to the public. Although a knowledge of them may not qualify every individual always to dispense with a professional doctor, it may. And should be, a protection against medical imposition; and, furthermore, we deem it but fair that one who finds fault with the practice of others should show a better way. Download or read book A Familiar Treatise on Medicine Vol 1 written by John M. Scudder and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 860 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Familiar Treatise on Medicine, Vol. 1: Anatomy, Physiology, Hygiene, Domestic Remedies, Surgery and Practice of Medicine, and Notes on Nursing The present volume is offered to the public with the belief that there is an earnest desire by many to understand more of the structure and functions of their own bodies, and to qualify them; selves to meet cases of-emergency, when a com petent physician can not be Obtained. Men and women know less of themselves than they know of anything else, and it is not only surprising, but often humiliating, to witness the gross ignorance displayed on these subjects, by persons who are otherwise well informed. It would seem, seme times, as if men's reasoning powers were in com plete abeyance when they or their families are sick, being as ready to employ the merest. Charlae tan or nostrum vender, as the educated physician, and to disregard the plainest rules of hygiene, as to give the patient good nursing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recent Materia Medica: Notes on Their Origin and Therapeutics All branches of Medical Science have taken great strides of late years. In Surgery, Spencer Wells and Lister, in Biological Medicine, Pasteur and Koch, have made clear steps in advance; and Therapeutics have become more rational, based on more accurate knowledge and a more extended field. And here an advanced state of information about new Materia Medica must be a decided help to the medical practitioner. Although there are many well-known remedies, superior in general practice to those mentioned in the following pages, yet every medical man has occasionally cases in which he would be glad to "ring the changes," and humour the system of his patient by trying a new medicine. The information in these Notes is compiled from many sources, extending over several years. Besides the Medical and Pharmaceutical Periodicals, the author owes thanks to the new Pharmacopoeias of Germany, the United States, and France; to the Year Books of Pharmacy, the Therapeutical works of Bartholow, Wood, Napheys, Farquharson and Ringer; Husemann and Hilger's "Pflanzenstoffe," Hanbury's "Pharmacographia," Bentley and Trimen's Medicinal Plants," Martindale's "Extra Pharmacop ia," Squibb's "Ephemeris," the "Therapist," Christy's "New Plants," Baillon's "Botanique Medicale," Quam's "Dictionary of Medicine," Papers by E. Book Complications

    Book Details:
  • Author : Atul Gawande
  • Publisher : Metropolitan Books
  • Release : 2003-04-01
  • ISBN : 1429972106
  • Pages : 292 pages

Download or read book Complications written by Atul Gawande and published by Metropolitan Books. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant and courageous doctor reveals, in gripping accounts of true cases, the power and limits of modern medicine. Sometimes in medicine the only way to know what is truly going on in a patient is to operate, to look inside with one's own eyes. This book is exploratory surgery on medicine itself, laying bare a science not in its idealized form but as it actually is -- complicated, perplexing, and profoundly human. Atul Gawande offers an unflinching view from the scalpel's edge, where science is ambiguous, information is limited, the stakes are high, yet decisions must be made. In dramatic and revealing stories of patients and doctors, he explores how deadly mistakes occur and why good surgeons go bad. He also shows us what happens when medicine comes up against the inexplicable: an architect with incapacitating back pain for which there is no physical cause; a young woman with nausea that won't go away; a television newscaster whose blushing is so severe that she cannot do her job. Gawande offers a richly detailed portrait of the people and the science, even as he tackles the paradoxes and imperfections inherent in caring for human lives. At once tough-minded and humane, Complications is a new kind of medical writing, nuanced and lucid, unafraid to confront the conflicts and uncertainties that lie at the heart of modern medicine, yet always alive to the possibilities of wisdom in this extraordinary endeavor. Complications is a 2002 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.
