The subject of the chapter to which this note is appended, is " God." It is attempted to say therein what we know of God, and what we may know of Him. With some minds this inquiry encounters the question, Can we know any thing of Him? God, the All-Father, must be absolute, unconditioned, and infinite. Can a finite and created mind know any thing of such a God? A few years ago wme leading minds in England advanced the theory, not unknown to an earlier philosophy, that while there must be a universal Cause, and it was right to call this Cause by the name of God, this God must be essentially and wholly unknowable by man. This notion spread rapidly though not widely. They with whom it originated were not, to say the least, prominent or decided religionists. But it was soon adopted by some who held high office in the English Church, and who were very careful to affirm their unwavering faith in the Christian religion. As far as I can learn, there are not many distinguished persons who express this view. But indications in the religious literature of the day show that it is exerting considerable influence, and is attractive to many minds. In an interesting paper in the " Cotemporary Review," Mr. Gladstone, formerly Prime Minister of England, spoke of this new form of religious thought or doctrinp. A new name has been found for this new sect or party. They are called "Agnostics," from a phrase in Acts xvii. 23, wherein Paul says that he found an altar with this inscription, "To the unknown God,"--'Ayvaxrra 6ea. This name is exactly applicable to the holders of this doctrine; for while the Greek adjective means, in one of its senses, "unknown," as it is translated in the received text of the Bible, it has also the...
